Work Text:

“Is she ok?” Adaine couldn’t help the frantic tone in her voice as she ran up to Tracker who was standing in the waiting room.

“She’s fine, Adaine,”

Tracker’s hands were on her shoulders, and she was wearing an expression of reassurance and concern which left Adaine confused.

She wasn’t the one who was hurt, she didn’t need sympathy.

She needed to see Fig, Fig was the one who was hurt. Fig was the one in the hospital.

“Are people- can I- can I see her?”

“Yes bu-”

“Where is she?”

“Adaine yo-”

“No! I need to see her, I have to- Just, tell me where she is!”

“Adaine!” Tracker said firmly, holding onto her as she tried to push past.

“You can see her, but you need to calm down-”

“I am, I-”

“Adaine. She’s fine, she’s awake, but please just take a breath? She won’t want to see you really freaked out, alright?”

“Right,”

“C’mon, just breathe, in, and out,”

Adaine did as she was directed, the panic receding slightly but the worry was still filling her mind.

“Good?”

Adaine nodded.

“Ok, she has some bad scrapes and bruises, bruised ribs, minor fractures in her left arm, and two broken fingers,”

“Concussion? Internal bleeding?”

“Mild concussion, nothing too serious, should clear by tomorrow, they’re keeping her overnight for observation but all her vital signs are normal she doesn’t seem to have any internal bleeding.”

“Good, that’s good,”

“Feeling calmer?”

“Yeah… I’m sorry… for shouting a bit at you there…”

“Don’t worry about it, I know if something similar happened to Kristen I’d be exactly the same,”

Adaine nodded as Tracker gently led her down a corridor from the waiting room, far too distracted to notice or dispute the comparison.

After what was an excruciating amount of time for Adaine and what was lightly a minute to everyone else, they came to a door at which Tracker stopped, looking at Adaine as if for confirmation.

When Adaine nodded, Tracker opened the door and led her into a sterile, plain room, which was illuminated by a large window overlooking the park outside.

Kristen was already sitting inside but Adaine’s attention immediately leapt to the occupant laying in the bed which dominated the room clad in a medical gown, several adhesive bandages visible poking out from under the cloth and a cast on her left arm.

As soon as she looked up at the sound of the door, Fig beamed broadly.

“Addy! Hi!”

“Hi,” looking back on it, Adaine would be proud of how un-panicked her voice was as she awkwardly hovered in the entrance before a gentle push from Tracker had her crossing the small room quickly, slipping down into the chair to Fig’s left.

But right now, she had no ability to examine her intonations, or the look which Tracker and Kristen exchanged as Adaine’s hand instinctively went to stroking through Fig’s hair.

“How’re you feeling?”

Fig let out a dry laugh, wincing slightly as she did.

“Like I flew over the handlebars of my bike,”

“What happened?”

“I flew over the handlebars of my bike,”

“Fig,” Adaine tried to be serious but her mouth twitched in amusement.

“It wasn’t my fault!” Fig smirked, “I was going down the street, then some asshole pulled out in front of me and I hit them, then I was in the air, then I wasn’t,”

“Oh my God…”

“Honestly at the time it wasn’t that bad, I actually managed to stand up pretty easily, staggered over to my bike and tried pulling it up,”

“That’s called shock, love,”

“Well shockingly, haha, get it, ‘shock’ ingly? My bike’s fine; a bit battered but still working,”

“Like you?”

“Haha, yeah, I guess I’m not looking to hot,”

“I’m just glad that you’re alright, I… I was really worried about you,”

“Hey,” Fig grinned, reaching over with her usable hand to take Adaine’s hand which wasn’t running through her hair.

“I’m fine, just a couple of scrapes, I get that walking around a cramped room.”

Adaine laughed and squeezed Fig’s hand back, pulling it up to kiss it gently.

Something caught her attention and Adaine looked at the vital signs on the EKG machine Fig was hooked up to, the heartbeat had risen slightly, the increase in the frequency of the beeping had been what distracted her.

“95 Bpm… that’s a bit high…” she bit her lip, unable to stop the concern rising again.

“It’s been down at about 75 since she woke up,” Kristen interjected, reminding Adaine that there were other people in the room, “it only started going up when…” she trailed off and Adaine looked over to see her exchanging raised eyebrows with Tracker who spoke up instead.

“They said it’ll fluctuate a bit,”

“Good,” Adaine nodded, looking back to Fig who grinned reassuringly, but Adaine didn’t miss how her cheeks darkened.

“Um, we’re going to go get something to eat, you guys ok?” Tracker said after a few moments, Adaine nodded in response and Fig raised a tumb lazily in the air.

“Yeah, we’ll, uh, leave you two alone,” Adaine ignored the odd note she heard in Kristen’s voice, now wasn’t the time for that.

As the door closed behind Kristen and Tracker, Fig yawned then grimaced at a shot of pain.

“You should try and get some sleep,”

“Yeah… I’ve been nodding off the past couple hours…”

“Did they say you should stay awake?”

“No, just… wanted to see you before I went to sleep,” Fig responded sleepily.

“Well… you have now, get some rest, ‘k?”

“Yeah, I will,”

“One question though?”

“Hmmm?”

“You didn’t do this on purpose to get out of doing the dishes did you?”

Fig smirked evily.

“You have discovered my devious plan! But too late! For it is already done!”

“Curses!” Adaine grinned at Fig’s dramatic tone.

“Well, I shall plan my revenge while you sleep.”

“Will you stay with me?”

“Of course,” Adaine kissed the back of Fig’s hand again, “as long as you want me to.”

“Cool,” Fig smiled then yawned again, “Night,” It was only a few moments later that Fig’s eyes fluttered closed and her breathing shifted into the familiar pattern of sleep.

Adaine watched her for what might have been hours, still holding her intact hand in hers, eventually she leant forwards and kissed Fig’s forehead.

“I’m so glad you’re ok. I’ll keep you safe, I promise,”
