Kristen stared at the newspaper her mother had laid out on the table. On the front page was an article about a diplomatic scandal and rumors of a war brewing. Kristen didn’t pay attention to any of that. Her gaze was firmly locked on the picture that accompanied the article.
Two elven girls looked back at her. They were surrounded by people, reporters or lawyers or something, but they were the main focus of the image.
And they looked so scared.

Right after Adaine fails her Hudol tests Aelwyn reports their parents to the police.
This causes them to loose guardianship of their daughters and the Abernant sisters are placed in the care of a human family that worships Helio.

Kipperlilly Copperkettle was laying on the top shelf of the cabinet. Her tiny halfling body was scrunched up to fit in a space Gorgug didn't even think he'd be able to stick his head into. She was at eye height with him, glaring like he'd just walked in on her having a bath or something, but didn't immediately lunge with a dagger like Gorgug had been half expecting.

Instead, the revealed figure was an overly round and adorable frog. Not as cute as a cat, of course, but shockingly squishable looking. He looked up at La Gran with big, wet, goopy eyes and croaked pitifully. He was also, noticeably, wearing a collar around his torso. "He's really lost. From out of town, I think. And, look, look, he's a pet! A service pet. And he lost his person he was supposed to be serving."
