Summary
Helaena sees and understands more than most could ever guess, and while all others seem to regard her mother and her close friend Lord Larys Strong to keep a simple and purely platonic connection. Helaena notices much more to it.

But Lord Strong will not give her up, no he likely never will, no matter what her mother says. He’s clutching onto her mother, biting his teeth down as deep as they can go. Her mother has broken them apart from their intimacy, it’s purely a transaction now between them. But still, he demands from her that they are still connected, he never touches her, never takes to violence towards her. But he pushes, demands and takes whatever he can lay his hands on, and her mother is helpless to do anything but let him. He forces them together in shame now instead of companionship. He misses their connection too much not to make them the same in their own pain. But just as Lord Strong will not let her mother go, her mother can not let him go. She needs him, she will keep needing him for a long time forward.
Helaena wonders if that’s love, to need someone, to never want to let go, to rather have them hate you than discard you.
