Work Text:
Bdubs glanced up as Etho shuffled into the bedroom, little white ears drooping and his tail dragging against the floor.
“Hi,” Etho croaked, squinting against the sunrise as it spilled in through the monolith’s windows.
Bdubs had only put on one boot, still rubbing the sleep out of his own eyes. “Morning, sweetheart,” he whispered.
Etho shook his head, dropping onto the bed next to him. “Night.”
He haphazardly kicked his boots off and chucked his mask onto the floor, before wrapping his arms around Bdubs’ waist.
“Stay?”
Bdubs chuckled. “I’ve got stuff to do today, Etho. I need an early start.”
Etho grumbled, holding him tighter and nestling his head into the crook of his neck. “Stay. Not asking.”
He sighed. “Etho, darling—”
Etho’s chest rumbled, and he wrapped his tail around them both. “Pleeease? I can’t sleep without you…” His words were low and quiet, laced with soft, sleepy purrs.
He giggled, petting Etho’s head. “Okay, okay, I’ll stay until you fall asleep, baby.”
Etho huffed, finally letting go of him and flopping back onto the bed. “You’re so mean to me.”
“What? How am I— how am I being mean?”
He kicked off his half-on boot and snuggled next to him. The bed was still warm, and the sunlight streaming in bathed Etho in a golden halo. His eyes were half-lidded as he tugged him closer, purring softly. It wasn’t a real purr, not the constant steady rumbling that cats did; it was a little scratchier, and broken up by Etho’s inhales. Nonetheless, it was warm and cozy and the best noise in the entire world to him.
Etho sighed, his eyes fluttering shut. “Y’r being mean.”
Bdubs smiled and tangled a hand in his hair, scratching behind one of his ears. Etho leaned into the touch, his sleepy little purrs picking up in volume for a second. It was almost enough to lull Bdubs into closing his eyes—no, he couldn’t, he had things to build today. He’d be damned if laying with his beloved didn’t tempt him, though.
He stayed put, listening to Etho purr and his breathing even out. His purring petered out, falling sporadic until eventually stopping. The sun was well over the horizon, lighting the white room golden. He guessed he had to actually get up now…
Bdubs laid there for another moment. Just to make sure Etho was actually asleep. Yeah, just… just to make sure he was asleep. Not at all because he suddenly didn’t want to leave their bed.
He leaned forward and planted a little kiss on Etho's nose. “Sleep well, cutie,” he whispered.
