    Summary

Etho looks lonely. That's all Bdubs can come up with. There, halfway down the alleyway, surrounded by piles of zombie bodies, face smeared with flesh and poison, mask and hair drenched in sweat, Etho looks lonely. He turns, dragging his sword after him, arms shaking, and meets Bdubs' gaze.

He makes a strangled noise in the back of his throat, something animal and fearful, and Bdubs runs to catch him before he collapses. Another grief-stricken noise escapes Etho's throat and he stumbles forward into Bdubs' arms, head against the bell of Bdubs' throat. He's sobbing, dripping tears down Bdubs' shirt, chest heaving with every breath he takes that threatens to tear him apart. He clutches at Bdubs' back, nails sharp and tearing into Bdubs' shirt, some desperate scramble for control.

"I love you," he says again, like a broken record. His voice breaks. "I love you. I'm sorry. I know you're tired."

This is not about Etho. This is not about Bdubs. This is not about love, that old corpse. This is just about the apocalypse.

    Summary

It’s strange. Only now, confronted with the very thing he came down here to find, is reality enforcing itself upon Bdubs.

This is impossible. Maybe the blackbox of Etho’s AI could be retrieved, but at a depth of 36,000 feet his netherite-fibered body would have lasted six seconds at most before his lovely face pulverized. Whatever’s left might as well be a husk of radiation. He is not outside the submersible. No one is.

And still. A knock on the door. One-two-three. Polite and patient.

(At the bottom of the ocean, Bdubs studies microbes with the help of the CONCORP android Etho. They are not alone.)

    Summary

The Glory of Heaven shined a beacon through perdition to find him, until they came upon him: a forgotten waste of a human cowering beside the rack.

The Righteous Man! Oh, how heaven rejoiced, how the trumpets sounded! See one of their number approach the wretched hero and grip his shoulder tight, see him raise him from the pit-

That is not how it happened.
