Chapter Text
Two boys hold hands behind the fence on a Bangkok sidewalk on June 6th, 2023. One wears a mask, the other a dark hoodie despite the heat. Both sport matching silver necklaces.
People pass on the street, bright and rainbow and loud. Giant paper peacocks and flowing banners and signs and music and a tangible, fierce sort of joy.
Later that day, in the ringing silence of the car, one says, “Last year was the first of these in sixteen years. I didn’t go. It felt wrong, by myself.”
