Work Text:
Shuichi woke up and checked the time. “Shit. My sleep schedule is going to kill me.” He looked out the window to check if it was still dark. Unsurprisingly, it wasn’t. Maybe he had just slept in late. He noticed an envelope stuck to the window. It was… checkered around the edges. He knew who it had to be from.
He opened his window and opened the letter.
‘Happy Valentine’s Day, Shuichi! I decided I’d leave you a note for getting so close to crack the case! You should go check your living room. ;)’
Oh shit. Was he… in his house? No. No way. He’d be stupid to think that. He has to check either way. It sounds stupid but that man cannot be in his house. He could arrest him, right here—in this house—and right now.
He decided to be more professional and to get dressed. You never hear of a detective chasing a wanted criminal in pajamas, do you? He did everything else he’d normally do in the morning.
Only…
Quicker.
He could hear faint laughter from his living room. Oh god.
He rushed over to the living room and saw some… guy sitting on his couch.
“Aw. Is the detective startled to see me without a mask for once? You’ve been wanting to see me like this for so long. You finally have it, so what’s the big problem?”
He was. Cute. ‘Shuichi, this is not the time for a gay panic. Pull yourself together.’
He stood there, as if admiring the thief. He never got to see him like this.
“I’m flattered to be some good eye candy for you. If all I needed to do to stun you and get away was to take off my mask, things would have been over a lot sooner.” His voice was smooth and his words were thought out carefully. Shuichi would dare say that the thief was trying to flirt with him.
Shuichi walked towards him. “You’re on my property. I can arrest you right here if I want to.”
The thief smiled. “Are you sure that you’d be using the handcuffs for that? It’s Valentine’s Day, after all!”
Shuichi’s face flushed. What was he trying to do? “If you’re trying to seduce me, it isn’t working…”
The thief stood up from the couch. “Really? It seems like it is working! You haven’t handcuffed me yet and it doesn’t look like you plan to, either.” Shuichi watched as the other walked up even closer to him. “In fact, you seem to be rather calm with me in your house.”
Shuichi couldn’t believe this was happening. What was happening? Why was this happening?
“Not going to talk? Don’t worry! Silence says more than you think! Is it perhaps… that you don’t mind what I’m saying?
More silence.
“I see.” The thief walked even closer to Shuichi. He got even closer to Shuichi and got him to lean down. He acted as if he was going to lean in for a kiss, and just as Shuichi closed his eyes, he backed away. “You certainly wish, don’t you? I know! I’m hot, take in the picture while I’m still here.”
Shuichi stood there in shock. He didn’t know what to do. He felt like a helpless puppet, waiting for the theif to tell him what to do. What was he doing to him?
“You really do want a kiss, hm?” Silence. He sat down on the couch once again. What could barely count as a nod came from Shuichi. The thief smiled. “You’re so cute. I never thought you’d listen to me so easily! If I had told you to wait while I was running from you before, would you have just stopped? That’s a little sad. I always thought our games were rather difficult. Now that I know that you’re this into me, it’ll be a lot easier! I don’t know if it’ll even be fun anymore. Come sit with me, Shuichi!”
Shuichi could feel his legs almost moving on their own. Why was this happening? Was he this eager to hear more from the phantom thief? “We aren’t supposed to be doing this. I don’t even know your name!”
The thief tilted his head. “Did I not make it clear in the letter? Tell you what. If you can figure it out within five minutes within the information I’ve given you, I’ll kiss you. That way I can make fun of just how eager you are to have me.”
Shuichi hesitated. He still had the letter in his hands. He opened it up and heard Kokichi laugh.
Why was he embarrassing himself like this?
He skims over the letter. Twice. He couldn’t find anything.
“This is priceless. A little lost, detective? Check the back.” Kokichi snickered and took the letter from him, only to turn it over.
Kokichi Ouma.
He could practically feel his face warm up. “Kokichi…?”
Kokichi nodded. “Without the mask, I’m Kokichi Ouma. Forever yours. With it, I’m still your phantom thief. Is that fair enough for you?”
Shuichi stood still. He knows how to search him up now. He doesn’t even want to. He wants… whatever this is. He’s only ever wanted to be loved and now he is. But… by the person he shouldn’t be with. “Yes.”
Kokichi couldn’t help a sly grin. He leaned in to Shuichi and kissed him. For a lot longer than he expected, too.
“Kokichi, what are we doing? This is all moving too fast!”
Kokichi stopped for a moment. Of course this was going too fast. He didn’t have the time to stay here for more than four hours, and he planned a lot into those four hours. Shuichi wasted 30 minutes of that time plainly sleeping, so he had to play catch-up if he wanted to get to the good part. “Aw, you should’ve just said so! I’m usually quick on the run, what do you expect?” Kokichi paused for a moment. “But I do have another quick surprise. You’ll have to find me first!” Kokichi ran off somewhere in his house.
“Damnit… if my boss were here, I’d be fired on the spot.” Shuichi went out and looked for Kokichi. There were two places he could be. In his bathroom or… in his bedroom. His bedroom would surprisingly be less ideal. It’s where he kept all of his detective necessities. Where he kept all of his prized possessions.
At that thought, he rushed to his room. He opened the door to see…
Kokichi sat on his bed, holding flowers out to him.
Shuichi hesitated. “Those aren’t stolen, right?”
“Of course they aren’t! Nothing but the best for my beloved!”
Shuichi put the flowers in a vase next to his bed. The other seemed pleased and pulled him to his bed.
“What exactly do you plan on doing here?” Shuichi still didn’t have the answer to that particular question. He had no idea why he was here.
Kokichi messed with some of Shuichi’s handcuffs he found. “Aw, you know, Valentine’s Day stuff!”
Shuichi didn’t quite understand.
“Come on, don’t you know what people do today, Shuichi?” Kokichi tilted his head.
Shuichi shook his head no. He usually spent Valentine’s Day alone. All of his friends were busy and had plant of their own.
Shuichi finally noticed Kokichi messing with the handcuffs. “Kokichi—put those down!”
Kokichi spun them around his fingers and smiled. “Nope! I like them a lot. They’re so cool, aren’t they!”
Shuichi tried grabbing them and once he did manage to grab hold of one side, he heard a click.
“Woah, I did it! I captured a detective all for myself! He’s mine!” Kokichi did an evil laugh.
Shuichi rolled his eyes. “Hand over the key, Kokichi.”
Kokichi batted his eyes. “What keys? I don’t see any keys.”
Shuichi looked displeased.
“Hey, think about it. What even are keys? Why do they exist?”
“Just give them to me!” Shuichi’s handcuffed hands reached for a set of keys next to Kokichi. He grabbed Shuichi’s hand, giggling to himself.
“No way! I got you fair and square! No cheats.”
Shuichi hesitated. “So what do you plan on making me do? Stay here and watch you for hours?”
Kokichi checked his nonexistent watch. “Nope! I’ve probably only got an hour and a half left with you. I need to make it count.”
Shuichi’s breathing hitched. “What are you going to do?”
Kokichi smiled. “You know exactly what I want. Could you please give it to me? Pretty please?”
“You’re notorious for stealing. I’m sure you’ll take what you want of me anyways.”
Kokichi gasped. “I have standards! I’m not a sicko. If you really seemed to not like this, I’d let you go and leave! Back to being the famous phantom thief with you chasing behind me.”
But Shuichi didn’t want Kokichi to leave. Why on earth would he want that? “Fine. Kiss me.”
Kokichi seemed delighted. “…and we could watch some of a movie afterwards!”
“Are you going to come back?”
Kokichi thought for a moment. “How about this, I come here by night, stay until we need to go to work, and call it fair?”
“Deal.”
