“Have you thought of anything?” she asked. “A name, I mean. I’ll go by Jean for now, but I’ll keep thinking.”
The more he rummaged, the more smooth emptiness he found. He wondered if the glass was truly strong enough to keep his memories at bay, and for an instant, imagined it shattering and memories pouring forth.
A tiny fissure.
Snape.
The name came from somewhere within the fissure, and seeping out with it was a bone-cold certainty that he had been a cruel man. A terrible man. His own opinion of himself began to bleed back, like the negative in a photograph, and he realised that he had been a monster. Whoever he had been, whatever he had done, it had been monstrous.
“No,” he said aloud. “I don’t remember anything.”
