Sandy paused, and did another headcount of his cats.
On a normal day, there were 15.
Today, there were 16.
A dark, one-eyed tomcat was perched on the arm of Sandy’s favorite chair, ears swiveling to pick up the sound of any threat.
Sandy smiled, then sat in a different chair.
“Hey buddy.”
The cat turned to glare at him.
Sandy raised an eyebrow. “Don’t worry little guy.”
He patted his lap. “I won’t hurt you.” The tomcat’s nose wrinkled, and he jumped up to the highest shelf, glaring down at his new benefactor.
