Work Text:

Hiccup sat with Toothless’s lovely head in his lap while the Light Fury watched them. (While all of Berk watched them, really.)

And for a brief moment, he considered having Toothless take the dragons to the Hidden World and keeping the dragons away from a world that was rather hostile to them, bar a few pockets of allies.

But he loved dragons. He loved Toothless. He loved the dragons that he had spent years working with on a daily basis because they were the dragons his friends and family rode and loved. He loved the dragons that made Berk their home. He even loved the dragons that he had never successfully worked with!

And he knew his friends and family also loved these dragons. He knew, intimately, through close calls through the years, that losing these dragons, would deeply hurt them.

And he didn’t want to be the reason they lost their dragons.

And he wanted to spend the rest of his life with Toothless in it.

The Light Fury cooed.

“You and me have something in common. We both love him,” Hiccup said to her. “But I think you know that.”

Otherwise, she wouldn’t have saved him.

“Hey, bud, you know that, right?” Hiccup said to the dragon in his lap. He caressed his beautiful head. “That I love you so much.”

He moved his head towards Toothless’s face and Toothless closed the gap to lick his face, tongue sliding on lips and cheeks.

He heard multiple groans coming from the Riders.

“We wanted to kiss him!” Ruffnut yelled.

Hiccup chuckled.

Toothless looked at Hiccup and then looked at the Light Fury. The Light Fury was watching both of them.

“I mean, I’m already in a polyamorous relationship with five amazing people, why not a triad with two dragons?” Hiccup said.

Hiccup reached forward to touch the Light Fury on her head and she allowed it.

“How about it? We can share him,” Hiccup said. “I would absolutely love and treasure and spoil any babies you two have.”

Toothless huffed at him.

“Oh, too early to be suggesting babies, eh?” Hiccup joked.

There was laughter from various Berkians. Hiccup could make out Ruffnut and Gobber laughing in particular.

The Light Fury cooed at him and nudged him.

“I guess you’re okay with it, huh?” Hiccup asked.

She cooed at him again.

“Great!” Hiccup said.

He gave both of their heads pats.

“I’ll leave you two alone for a bit. I have to go kiss five people,” Hiccup said.

Toothless laughed.

Hiccup hopped up onto one leg, and was quickly surrounded by Astrid, Fishlegs, Snotlout, Ruffnut, and Tuffnut. They were the best.

Eret got close by to wipe a cloth over Hiccup’s face.

“There, Chief; face clear of Dragon spit,” Eret said. “Kiss away, all.”

And Eret just as quickly got out of the way so the Riders could kiss Hiccup.

It had been over a decade since the move to New Berk and Grimmel’s defeat. Hiccup sometimes thought about that brief moment of weakness where he seriously considered sending the dragons to the Hidden World, but every time he did, he came to the same conclusion: this would have been a mistake and therefore he had no regrets about having made the opposite decision.

Hiccup was incredibly happy with his beautiful life that included Toothless and the other dragons. He and the Dragon Riders had married and had six children together (Astrid liked to joke that they were evenly matched). Toothless and the Light Fury had had three hatchlings thus far. Hiccup had been there for all nine of their births or hatchings. They were raising their kids together. As they should.

While Berk had gotten used to the image of Hiccup and Toothless standing together, as often was the case when Hiccup was younger, they had also gotten used to seeing Hiccup, as Chief, standing next to Toothless while Hiccup carried one of his children (some of whom looked like the Chief!) in his arms and one of Toothless’s offspring around his shoulders.

Plus, sleeping next to Toothless never got old.
