   Summary

   Billy can admit that he has a conflated understanding of the same sex. But it’s not like he’s ever been proven wrong. They all have the capability of being or turning into a man like his father. The kind of man who holds his power over others. Violent. Mean. Cruel. One who can’t show any form of vulnerability.

   If you’re a man who doesn’t fit that mold…you’re not really a man.

   That’s what his father has tried to beat into him since Billy first showed signs that he wasn’t anything like him.

   Ever since then, it’s been a lesson in respect and responsibility. The respect in obeying his father’s vision. The responsibility to follow through with it.

   The thing is, Billy really tries to.

   It makes the self-loathing so much worse, but there’s that part of him that just wants to please his old man; that wants his acceptance. Billy still holds out hope that he can make the man proud through emulation. Maybe the fists will stop coming then. Maybe Neil will look at Billy with as much pride and respect as he can muster.
