Morning Joy

Summary:

Ronan has two alarms. One to tell him that he has ten minutes to cuddle Adam before his other alarm goes off to tell him to get up.

Notes:

I fucking love domestic bliss/fluff. Had an idea for this after talking to Anna last night and this was the result.

Work Text:

Ronan woke up to the sound of his first alarm. He rolled over blearily, reaching for his phone on the bedside table and dismissed the alarm, rolling back over, and reaching out for his husband. As his arm came down on Adam’s side of the bed, he found empty space.

Ronan shuffled his hand around, seeking Adam out, but found nothing. Adam’s side of the bed was cool. Ronan sat up, confused. No Adam in sight. He squinted his eyes, suspicious, and turned back to his phone, checking the time.

Ronan had two alarms set. One was his ten minute warning. It woke him up and gave him enough time to cuddle Adam before his second alarm went off, which was for him to get his ass out of bed and tend to the farm.

He’d been doing this for years, before they’d been married, a casual routine that made the early morning hours worth it, especially in winter.

But there was now no Adam to cuddle, which was very strange. Ronan sat up, tossing back the blankets. Chainsaw wasn’t in her nesting box that Ronan had made for her, which meant Adam was up and about somewhere in the house. Chainsaw would attach herself to whoever was the first one up, which was usually Ronan.

Ronan sighed, running a hand over his buzzed head, and got up to get ready for his morning. He pulled on a pair of jeans, fished out a shirt, tugged on a pair of socks, and grabbed a hoodie. He unplugged his phone and went downstairs. The lights were on and he saw Chainsaw in one of the armchairs, playing with the newest puzzle ball that Ronan had dreamt for her.

Ronan stopped in the entryway to the kitchen. Adam stood at the kitchen counter, his back to Ronan. He was still in his pajamas; a pair of joggers that hung low on his hips, and one of Ronan’s t-shirts that fell off one shoulder. His hair was sleep-mussed and Ronan’s heart flip-flopped in his chest.

A sleep-warm, bed-headed Adam was irresistible (well, any version of Adam was irresistible) and Ronan moved through the kitchen, making enough noise so Adam heard him, before Ronan curled his arms around Adam from behind.

He rested his chin on Adam’s shoulder, sneaking his hands under Adam’s shirt to rest against his warm skin. Adam hummed, reaching up to gently touch Ronan’s cheek. Ronan kissed his exposed shoulder, nuzzling him a little.

Adam sighed and Ronan smiled. “What’re you doin’?” he murmured.

“Makin’ you coffee,” Adam replied. His accent was thicker when he was tired and Ronan could still hear the sleepiness in his voice. He yawned and Ronan chuckled, kissing his shoulder once more.

“You didn’t have to get up so early…”

“Wanted to,” Adam hummed in reply, his hands resting over Ronan’s. “Thought it would be nice…”

Ronan tucked his face against Adam’s shoulder, gently swaying them. “It is. Thanks, doll.”

Adam hummed again, resting his head back on Ronan’s shoulder for a moment, before he turned in Ronan’s arms, hugging him. They held each other while the coffee percolated, swaying a little, Ronan smoothing his hands up and down Adam’s spine lovingly.

The coffee pot beeped, indicating that the coffee was done, and Ronan gave Adam a squeeze.

“Go back to bed, Parrish,” he murmured and Adam leaned back, looking up at Ronan with tired eyes. It made Ronan chuckle and fill with fondness. He kissed Adam’s forehead and then his mouth.

“Don’t take too long,” Adam murmured, kissing Ronan once more, before slipping away, heading back upstairs. Ronan watched his husband walk out of the kitchen, his heart full. It was a silly thing, to feel so much about it. There were plenty of spouses who did stuff like this but it made Ronan all soft and gooey inside when Adam did things for him.

It didn’t have to be big stuff either. Making coffee for him, starting up the car so it was warm by the time he had to leave, folding his socks, packing him lunch. Neither of them were good with words. Ronan liked to leave gifts, Adam liked to do things.

Ronan poured himself a cup of coffee, looking out the window at the fields, their little barn, the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance. He flexed the fingers of his left hand, brushing the silicone ring he wore in place of his actual wedding band. The silicone was safer for a farm than metal was.

Ronan finished his coffee, placed his mug by the coffee pot for later, and went to the mudroom. Chainsaw heard him and came waddling over, croaking at him.

“Yeah, yeah,” he told her. “We’re going.”

He slid into his boots, pulled on his Carhartt, shoved his skullcap over his head, and opened the back door. Chainsaw flew out into the cool morning air and Ronan smiled, watching her as she soared, flying out over the fields. He shoved his hands in his pockets, walking down to the tiny barn.

Ronan went through his usual routine; opening up the barn, tuning on the lights, checking on all the animals, making sure everyone had food, water, snacks, and scratches. The process was quicker compared to the Barns.

The Nest, Ronan and Adam’s small hobby farm, was half the size of the Lynch homestead but it worked out well for just the two of them. They didn’t need much and it was all theirs. Done with his tasks, making a note for what supplies he needed to order that week, he whistled for Chainsaw, waiting for her to fly back to him.

He offered up his arm and she came in for a landing.

Kerah ,” she exclaimed and he brought her close to kiss her head.

“Hi,” he hummed at her. “Let’s go.”

They went back inside, Ronan placing Chainsaw down, chuckling as she hopped her way back to the living room. He took off his boots, hat, and jacket, making his way back upstairs. He climbed the stairs, walking down the hall to his and Adam’s bedroom.

Ronan paused in the doorway. Adam was lying on his stomach in their bed, one leg pulled up like he was running, one hand resting next to his face on his pillow, the blankets pulled up so that all Ronan could really see was part of his face, and his fingers.

Ronan walked into their room, tugging off his jeans and slid into bed with Adam, curling around him, cuddling up close against him. Adam stirred a little, his hand sliding over Ronan’s, tangling their fingers, before he settled.

“Mmm, that was quick,” Adam murmured, face half pressed into the pillow under his head. Ronan chuckled. “Yeah. Easy.”

Ronan nosed against the back of Adam’s head, into his hair, pressing a kiss there. With his chores done, he could spend more than ten minutes cuddling his husband.
