He keeps digging, hoping it would wring out all the sleep and the dreams, hoping every creature that wanted to leap out with ill intent seeped out of his eyes and nose like his nightwash. “I want to be better at this.”

“I can’t go through it again,” Adam says, his words vibrating on Ronan’s skin. “I can’t do it.”
“Do what again?”
His breathing is slower now, but he refuses to let go of Ronan. His skin prickles with pain where Adam’s nails are digging into his t-shirt and onto his skin, but he does not need Adam to know this. If Adam needs to cut through every tendon of Ronan’s to feel calm, he will hand Adam the knife himself.
“My right ear felt weird all morning, and just now I lost my balance getting up from the chair,” Adam says after a while. “I can hear you, but you’re muffled.”
Or
Adam gets sick, which affects the hearing in his right ear, but Ronan is there to take care of him and help him through it.
