Chapter Text
Ren's POV
You know about those monsters that your parents tell you aren't real? Well they lied just like everything else they've told you, yep all lies. Guess what Santa ain't real.
Those monsters exist and I am one of them.
"Ren!" I smiled as I watched Yuma run towards me. A smile on my face upon seeing my girlfriend. She smiled grabbing my hand and we began to walk. We were going to the aquarium today. We came here quite often since it was close to our apartment and we both loved watching the fish. Today we both finally got a day off work, so we decided to go out.
We both had different jobs and studies, so we never really went out much which I was more than happy with however Yuma loved going outside.
I smiled as we walked around. Being able to be close to Yuma was great and I was happy that we were a year strong already. I was scarred I'd lose her but somehow, I haven't.
"Look at this one!" Yuma said enthusiastically pointing to a specific fish that was staring at me. Yuma let out a laugh "I think it likes you"
I grabbed Yuma's waist pulling her close "Well I'm taken already."
Yuma turned towards me kissing me sweetly before grabbing my hand and dragging me towards the food court. We decided it was time for some food so we both sat down at a booth and ordered our regular.
Yuma was the most sweet person I knew, she wouldn't even harm a fly. She was kind in everyway and often helped others...others like me.
She and I met in high school. I was quite the loner back then (I guess you could say I was very socially awkward) and I didn't have many friends, so she came up to me and we grew close. I was able to be open with her...but not about everything.
I wasn't the most social and she helped me. After high school we moved in together since we both applied for the same college. That's when we grew feelings for each other and started dating. I wasn't sure if I wanted to date her at the start, but I couldn't refuse her...
Since then we have lived together...and I've managed to keep my secret.
I was a vampire...and you might be thinking 'don't you drink blood? How can you hide that?'
Ever since I was little, I would drink blood from donators that my father would steal, anything to get by I guess. After he passed away, I continued to do that. All the blood I consumed was on my room hidden...
The mere sight of blood always made me crave it but thankfully we didn't have any incidents of that sort. I've managed to keep my hunger down and through the years I've drank less and less. I got accustomed to not having much blood though that meant I was a bit malnourished. I still felt fairly well and never had any problems.
Yuma was kind in nature, but I knew I couldn't tell her the truth.
"Ren?" she asked. I looked at her confused "You seemed to have spaced out...you haven't touched your food."
Ah...
I slowly ate my food while Yuma stared at me. "what?"
Yuma smiled "Nothing. It just seems like somethings on your mind"
I shook my head "Nothings on my mind" Yuma didn't seem convinced, but she didn't press further.
After we ate we made our way back to our home the night getting dark and the days getting colder as Christmas comes close.
I sat on the couch tired from the amazing date we had. Yuma chuckled grabbing the remote for the tv and turning it on. The news reporter talked "Another vampire attack in Detroit. It seems the vampire attacks have been more common these days."
My eyes widened and my throat closed up. Yuma stared at the tv sorrow in her eyes. She frowned "I wonder why the attacks keep happening?"
I didn't say anything in return while I continued to listen to the news reporter talking "In other news we have a video that have become fairly popular with many people having different opinions regarding the points in it. The video had been posted just last night with the police trying to figure out who the people in the video are."
The police?
The video then played. It was of a woman with curly short brunette hair and dark blue eyes. She stood in a pedestal with a microphone, people behind her. What she said shook me "Vampires roam in the streets and what are we going to do? You could even know a vampire currently. They hide among us; they look just like us with their fangs hidden but what do we really know about them? I'm here to tell you they're just like us and deserve to be here. Let me explain.
For a long time, I have been working alongside vampires to study them and their behavior. They crave blood and need it to survive but most don't hurt others to get it. Vampires didn't ask to be this way and they want to survive in this world just like us why should they be denied of that?
Vampire attacks have been happening more lately, stemming from the hatred they keep getting, with riots starting, protests saying all vampires must die. No wonder they are scared of us. We act high and mighty but we aren't any better than vampires HELL we are worse than them. The worst vampires have done is kill, but what have we been doing all these years? The same thing, not only that but we have rapist, pedophiles and many other disgusting people who live among us as well. Vampires just want to live like us...with no pain they just want to be happy and most don't want to hurt anyone.
Put yourself in their positions, you were born with the craving for blood and need it to survive...wouldn't you want to survive? Wouldn't you do anything in you power to live?
I end this by telling you that they aren't as bad as you may think..."
She ended her speech sitting down on a chair behind. Another person came up this one seemed to be a male with little to no hair and a lab coat on. He began to talk his voice deep. "I am the head researcher and scientist in the Vampire research we have been working on over the years. We have stayed hidden to avoid any trouble but we must come out as the times have become harsh towards the ones we want to protect. We have been working closely with many vampires whose identities are being kept hidden. They have helped us develop a way to calm the hunger of a vampire. As known vampires get a hunger for blood often uncontrollable, not anymore. Although this only works for a small period of time it manages to give the vampire enough time to get blood into their systems and end their hunger before hurting anyone. We called this the VHC." He stopped and another person was brought in. It looked to be a vampire but its face was hidden. You could tell It was hungry as it kept looking up at the man most likely wanting to attack him and drink his blood. The man then stabbed the vampire with what seemed to be a serum and the vampire immediately calmed down. Its eyes turned a light brown and he was taken away from the shot. "As demonstrated that's how the VHC works. Its used like an epi pen essentially" He walked back to the podium and continued to talk
"We have also been working on a way to feed vampires without giving them our blood, we haven't discovered a replacement yet, but we continue our research and I feel like we're close to achieving this goal. Though most vampires drink animal blood or donated blood its hard to come across that blood so easily, not to mention growing vampires need human blood to truly satisfy them and help them develop as they should. Why human blood? We aren't sure yet that's why we will continue our search further until we have all our questions answered.
We have come out of hiding to say we need your help" He stopped talking turning towards the woman that first talked. She got up standing next to him as she spoke "Our web site is up, and we are asking for help. Anything you may know, any donations you want to make, if you're a vampire you can contact us and help us. Anything you want is there. I decided to not hide my face, but my name will be hidden, won't do be much good but anything will do." as she said this a smirk grew on her face and then the video faded to black.
That's when the video ended, and text was shown on the screen "Everything on the website will be anonymous as well as our location. Any and all hate will be filtered out. Don't hesitate to help, we need you. The developed VHC is free to buy there as well. This research has been founded by me."
I didn't know what to say or even think...there's a way for us to calm our hunger? Does this mean there's people out there that don't hate us vampires? Could we one day be able to be free and not be scared that we'll be killed?
The news continued with them sharing their opinions on the video that already had millions of views on different platforms. Yuma turned of the tv off turning towards me. Her expression unclear. My heart sped up as she opened her mouth "What did you think?" she asked
I stared not saying anything, not wanting to mess up and say the wrong thing. She sighed getting up "I think they deserve a chance...I can't imagine how hard it most be for some of them."
My eyes winded in surprise and I stood up. Was this it? The moment I tell her the truth? Would she accept me?
"I'm a vampire" I said without even thinking. As soon as the words left my mouth instant regret hit me and I tried to say it was joke. Yuma just stared at me with disbelief and fear. This was the first time I've ever seen her look at me that way...
"Yuma?" I asked moving closer to her, but she backed off. "Don't...come near" was all she said. I watched as she walked out of the apartment my heart broken and tears threatening to spill.
Even though she had said she'd give them a chance...why didn't she give me one? Maybe she didn't think she'd ever meet a vampire since we are rare...but why...
What am I supposed to do now?
I fell onto the floor my legs unable to keep me up any longer. I don't know how long I was there in disbelief but once I broke out of my trance it was almost time for me to go to work. I got up somehow, but I couldn't move. The apartment felt empty without Yuma here. The atmosphere was killing me.
I need to get out of here.
I grabbed my things putting them inside a bag. I knew Yuma would come back and she most likely didn't want to see my here, so I needed to find another place to stay. Once I had everything packed, I made my way towards the front door feeling eyes on me. Suddenly glass was broken, and the door was on the ground Infront of me. I couldn't comprehend what was happening. Yelling was heard and all I did was fall to the ground with my hands on the top of my head.
They continued to yell but I couldn't hear anything, all I was able to hear was muffled voices. They grabbed my hands cuffing them behind me.
Yuma...
I cried out in pain as they hit me. I landed on the ground unable to move. As I continued to cry out in help, they searched the apartment finding my blood packs that I've kept. I was hoping someone would hear my call, sense my distress but who would help a vampire?
Tears blurred my vision and I was helped up. They yelled into my ear telling me to move but my legs seemed to have stopped working. Before I even knew what was happening I was on the floor again guns being fired around me.
I continued to cry not knowing what else to do when someone stood in front of me their hand reached out to me. Why...
Yuma...
