“Chinese?”
“Ugh, we ALWAYS get Chinese.”
“Nandos?”
“Got that today when I went out to lunch with Tara.”
Nick huffed, glancing over at Imogen as she sat tucked into the corner of the couch, her brightly painted fingernails tapping rapidly over her phone. They had been discussing what to get for dinner for the past 30 minutes and were still nowhere near a decision. His stomach grumbled in protest, reminding him once again that he’d skipped lunch because of his interview today.
“C’mon Immy, can we just pick something? Anything? I think I’m dying.”
Imogen finally glanced up from her phone, rolling her eyes at Nick’s melodramatics. She set her phone down on the wooden coffee table in front of her and angled her body toward her roommate, pulling her socked feet underneath her and tilted her head to the side.
“Pizza?” she finally asked.
Nick sighed happily, pulling his phone from his pocket and began to dial the number of their favorite pizza joint with a smile on his face. “I knew I let you move in for a reason.”
Nick had met Imogen during their second year of university after she became friends with Nick’s best friend Tara during their English class. Imogen and Nick had clicked instantly, but in a strictly platonic sense. (Something he had to constantly remind his rugby mates of whenever they teased him about taking Imogen out on a date.)
Imogen was pretty. Scratch that, Imogen was beautiful, but Nick had never felt anything for her other than a sense of brotherly protectiveness, the same feeling he felt for Tara and Darcy. Besides that, Imogen had had a boyfriend when she joined their friendship group. Before they knew about Tom, Imogen’s now ex-boyfriend, Darcy had “innocently” asked Imogen whether she might consider dating Nick (Nick had absolutely no idea this was happening) and Imogen had immediately dissolved into laughter. When she saw the offended look on Darcy’s face, Imogen quickly stifled her giggles.
“What’s so funny about dating Nick then?” Darcy had asked, her arms crossed defensively across her chest.
“Oh no, nothing!” Imogen said, eyes wide. “I love Nick. He’s the best. It’s just I see him more as a brother, you know? Dating Nick seems almost wrong.”
Darcy had relayed this information to Nick the next day and Nick, while he thought he should’ve been more embarrassed, merely shrugged his shoulders and told Darcy he agreed (before making her swear she would never meddle in his love life again).
By their final year of uni, Imogen had been living with Tom for about six months. Nick liked Tom, he was nice enough and had played rugby in school before uni, so they always had that to talk about.
He liked Tom, that is until Imogen knocked on Nick’s door at ten o'clock at night three days before graduation in tears.
Imogen had come home from her shift at the little boutique she worked at downtown during uni to find Tom in bed with another girl. Apparently, Tom had been cheating on Imogen for months. Imogen had gone to the nearest place to her own, Nick’s apartment.
Nick wanted to throttle him, but that’s not what Imogen wanted. So, the next day, when Imogen was sure Tom wasn’t home, Nick helped her pack up all her things and move them into his place. Imogen had protested at first, saying she would find her own place, but Nick refused to hear any of it, insisting Imogen move in. He had an extra bedroom anyways.
That was over a year ago now and they were closer than ever, and yet, despite the still constant ribbing from Christian, Nick held nothing but familial love for his roommate.

A knock on the front door sounded 45 minutes later. Nick popped up from the couch, sliding across the wooden floor in his socks to the door. He wrenched open the door and suddenly felt all the air leave his lungs.
Nick stared at the pizza boy in front of him. He was tall and thin and looked to be about the same age, maybe a year or two younger. His dark curls were currently being smashed onto his forehead by the bright red hat he wore on his head with the logo of the pizza company stitched to the front. Peeking out from beneath his too long curls were just about the bluest eyes Nick had ever seen.
The young boy’s face grew confused as Nick continued to openly stare. “Um, sorry. Did you order a pizza?” the boy asked, eyes flicking between Nick and the pizza box in his hand.
“Oh! Yeah. Yes. I did,” Nick answered, his cheeks growing warm as he fumbled for his wallet. How long exactly had he been staring?
“£15 please.”
Nick pulled out a 20 and pushed it into the boy’s hand, his breath hitching as their fingers brushed. “Keep the change.”
The younger boy produced a small smile as he handed the pizza to Nick. “Thanks. Have a good night,” he said before turning around and walking quickly down the hallway and around the corner.
Nick shut the door and let out a breath he didn’t know he was holding.
“So smooth, Nicholas.”
Nick jumped as Imogen appeared next to him, glancing over to throw her a glare.
“What are you talking about?”
Imogen rolled her eyes as she plucked the pizza box from Nick’s hands and floated over to the kitchen table. “Oh please, he was totally your type. Blue eyes, dark hair, sorta dorky but like super adorable. I’m surprised you didn’t melt into a puddle right then and there.”
Nick spun around on his heel to gawk at his roommate as she pulled two plates from the cabinet.
“I don’t have a type! ”
Imogen just glanced over to where Nick was still standing by the door as she sat down and popped open the box, letting the smell of cheese and sausage fill the small apartment.
“Come and eat before the pizza gets cold,” was all she replied.

Two days later, Tara and Darcy were round for a movie night and Nick still couldn’t get the curly headed pizza boy out of his head.
Darcy was currently regaling them with a story about their latest cooking class, which had somehow ended in Darcy getting caramel stuck in her hair and setting off the fire alarm. They had been learning how to cook hamburgers, to Nick’s utter confusion.
Tara had enrolled them in a class three weeks ago when she realized neither she nor her girlfriend had any idea how to cook anything other than toast and scrambled eggs. In uni, they usually came to Nick’s for dinner or grabbed takeout. Nick had learned to cook from his mum and quite enjoyed making food for his friends so he didn’t mind when everyone crammed into his small apartment for a home cooked meal. However, Tara insisted that if they were ever going to start a family they needed to know how to make more for their child other than just peanut butter and jelly sandwiches.
Nick watched Darcy flail her arms around, reenacting the moment when the fire alarm had gone off, before his mind started to wander to shades of blue and long, lean legs.
“Nick?”
Nick blinked at the sound of his name, turning his head to see all three girls staring at him, seemingly waiting for an answer. Imogen’s face had a knowing look as she eyed Nick’s flustered face.
“Uh…”
“Tara just asked you how your job interview went at that primary school on Thursday,” Imogen piped up, popping a crisp into her mouth, a smug smirk tugging at the corner of her mouth.
~ ~ ~
About twenty minutes later, Darcy announced she was hungry, despite them having eaten dinner less than two hours ago. Normally, this would have prompted Nick to head into the kitchen and cook up a quick snack for them, but he had other ideas.
“Wanna order a pizza?” Nick asked, already pulling out his phone. Imogen snorted from her spot on the corner of the couch as Darcy voiced her excited support of Nick’s idea. Tara glanced over at Imogen, eyebrow raised.
“What’s so funny, Immy?” Tara asked, watching as Darcy plopped down next to Nick as he pulled up the pizza place’s online menu. Imogen too glanced over at the pair, Nick staring intently at his phone screen and pointedly avoiding eye contact. Imogen smiled innocently over at Tara.
“Oh nothing, just saw a funny meme on my phone,” Imogen lied smoothly.
The knock on the door announcing the arrival of the pizza came not long after. Darcy went to stand up from her spot on the floor just as Nick raced out from the hallway where he had gone to grab a hoodie.
“Sit down! I got it!” Nick said as he skidded by. Darcy slowly sat back down, watching as Nick stopped in front of the door and flattened his hair.
“Uhm, did I miss something?” Darcy asked as Nick took a breath and opened the door. Imogen just smiled behind her mug of tea as she craned her neck to see out the door. However, she didn’t even need to see who was holding the pizza to know it wasn’t the boy from the other night as Nick’s shoulders dropped in disappointment.
Nick’s hand still gripped the doorknob as he came face to face with a boy with dark hair, except that’s where the similarities ended between this pizza boy and the one with the blue eyes. The boy in front of him was Asian with dark brown eyes, straight hair and was noticeably shorter than Nick. His face was set in a frown like he was stuck in a perpetual state of annoyance.
“One medium sausage and pepperoni and an order of garlic knots. £25 please,” the boy rattled off monotonously.
Nick paid the pizza boy, taking the food and shutting the door behind him with his foot. He set the food on the coffee table and plopped onto the couch between Imogen and Tara with a defeated sigh. All three girls stared at Nick, Tara and Darcy sporting matching expressions of confusion.
“Do you want to talk about what the hell that just was?” Darcy finally asked.
Nick glanced at all three in turn before he sat up and took a garlic knot out of the box. “Not particularly.”
Tara shot a look at Imogen, who sent her a lopsided smile and shrugged her shoulders before she too took a piece of bread.
Nick peeked at Imogen out of the corner of his eye once Tara had turned around to grab a slice of pizza. Imogen shot him a wink before popping up and asking what everyone wanted to drink. Nick smiled gratefully after her, despite knowing she would be teasing him within an inch of his life once the other girls left later.
~ ~ ~
“Nick, you can’t be serious. We had pizza last night! And I’m still bloated from all that cheese and bread.”
“No one told you to eat five garlic knots.”
When he was met with silence, Nick glanced over to see Imogen standing in the hallway, her hands on her hips as she regarded him with an exasperated expression.
“Pleaseeeee, Immy! He could be my soulmate.”
Imogen scoffed as she swatted at Nick’s stretched out legs so she could sit on the sofa. After Tara and Darcy had left last night, Imogen had finally gotten Nick to confess that he might have teeny crush on the blue eyed pizza boy (only after she had made fun of him for at least twenty minutes, of course).
“Just because you admitted you find him cute, doesn’t mean we need to order pizza every night! You don’t even know anything about him, he could hate kids! He could hate dogs!”
“But what if he doesn’t? What if he’s perfect? And now I’ll never know because you won’t let me order pizza.”
“Oh my god, fine. But at least order a salad this time,” Imogen said as she opened up the book she had brought out from her bedroom and began reading.
A knock sounded from the door exactly 33 minutes later (not that he had been counting or anything) while Nick had been standing in front of the mirror in their living room obsessively checking his hair.
Nick opened the door just as the blue eyed pizza boy slipped out their order from the insulated bag used to keep the pizzas warm. Nick’s breath hitched as the boy looked up and smiled, dimples decorating his cheeks.
“Hi,” the boy said. “I have a combination pizza and side salad with grilled chicken.”
“Hi,” Nick breathed out, unable to say much more as he was assaulted with shimmering blue eyes and high, sharp cheekbones.
The boy giggled, before clearing his throat. “Um that’ll be £24.95 please.”
“Right!” Nick exclaimed, shoving his hand into his pocket to dig out his money. “So, busy night tonight?”
“Oh, um, not really, no,” the boy replied, shrugging.
Nick counted out the money as he wracked his brain to think of something else to say. “You like your job?”
The boy furrowed his eyebrows as he shrugged again. “It’s okay, I guess.”
Nick finally handed over the money, accepting his food. “So, uh–”
“Thanks, have a good night,” the boy said as soon as the money touched his hand, turning and quickly walking down the hall.
Nick closed the door with a sigh, his cheeks burning with embarrassment. Imogen glanced up from her book as he walked behind the back of the couch toward the table.
“Utterly hopeless you are.”
Nick didn’t even have the energy to glare.

Nick had successfully avoided ordering any more pizza for the rest of the week until Saturday rolled around and Imogen announced she was going on a date. He had just been taking out the ingredients for his favorite chicken casserole dish when Imogen practically skipped into the kitchen to tell Nick she had met a nice guy at the coffee shop this morning and that he was taking her out for dinner.
Imogen rushed off to her room to shower and get ready as Nick eyed the ingredients spread out around the counter. He knew realistically that he could still make the chicken casserole and save the leftovers, but he also didn’t exactly feel like cooking for just himself. He also knew that his neighborhood pizza joint had just introduced calzones to their menu and well, they sounded delicious. Nick nodded, making up his mind as he began returning the ingredients back to the cupboards and fridge. He would just order in and make the casserole tomorrow (NOT because he was hoping to see a certain pizza boy, no. Because he wanted to try the calzones. THAT'S ALL).
Nick placed his order just as Imogen was leaving for her date. She walked out, her silver heels clacking against the wooden floors with her arms spread out from her sides. “Well?”
Nick looked up from his phone and smiled at his best friend. Imogen was wearing a light blue dress that was cinched at the waist, fanning out around her legs, stopping mid thigh. Her hair was styled into loose waves and a glittery necklace rested against her collarbones. She had done very minimal makeup, just a light coating of mascara, blush dusted across her cheeks and a rosy lip gloss.
“You look beautiful, Immy. Have fun and text me if you need a quick escape okay?” Nick said as he accepted a kiss on the cheek.
“Thank you, Nicky. Behave yourself tonight.”
Nick snorted. “Oh yeah, you know me, always getting into trouble.”
Imogen turned around in the doorway, quirking a delicate eyebrow. “Don’t think I didn’t hear you on the phone just now ordering a calzone,” she said, before swiftly closing the door as Nick sank lower into the couch, his cheeks as rosy as Imogen’s.
~ ~ ~
“Hi!” Nick said, opening the door to the blue eyed pizza boy.
The boy flashed him a shy smile. “Hi,” he answered. “One pepperoni calzone?”
“That’s me!” Nick said. “So, um how’s your night going?”
“Oh um it’s okay…” the boy said. “How’s yours? Your girlfriend not here tonight?”
Nick glanced up from counting out the money, staring bewildered at the pizza boy. “Girlfriend?”
The boy’s eyes grew wide as he began to ramble out apologies as though afraid he had insulted Nick. “Oh sorry. I mean, I’ve seen her every time I’ve delivered. The pretty blonde one? And well, these calzones are single serving so I assumed it was just you or you might have gotten more food like you usually do. Not that it matters how much you eat! I mean–sorry.”
Nick watched as the pizza boy rambled, getting more and more flustered, a pretty blush appearing on his tanned cheeks and reaching down his neck.
“Hey! Don't apologize,” Nick chuckled. “She’s not my girlfriend. Just my roommate and best friend. She’s actually on a date right now.”
The pizza boy just nodded, staring down at his feet. Nick handed over the money. “Um, I’m Nick by the way.”
The boy looked up and granted Nick with another shy smile and small laugh. “I know.”
“You do?”
“Your name comes through our systems every time you order and well I’ve delivered to you a few times now and…” the boy trailed off, shrugging.
Nick just nodded, accepting his calzone. “Right, well, uhm, have a good rest of your shift.”
The boy thanked him and turned around to head back down the hallway.
“Nick?” called the pizza boy from halfway down the hall. Nick, who had already been halfway to closing the door, swung it back open and looked at the other boy quizzically.
“I’m Charlie.”

Imogen came home a few hours later, telling Nick all about her date. (His name was Daniel, he was a complete gentleman and they had already agreed to a second date). When Imogen asked about his night Nick made it exactly three minutes, trying to play it cool telling her he’d just watched some tv and done some dishes, before it all came spilling out.
“His name is Charlie . Doesn’t that just suit him perfectly? Charlie .”
Imogen giggled behind her hand as Nick gave her a play by play of their conversation, his eyes sparkling as he recounted the way Charlie’s laugh sounded.
“Okay Nicky, I think we need a plan.”
“Plan?”
“To get you Charlie’s number!”
“Weren’t you the one discouraging me from ordering pizza like last week?”
Imogen flapped her hand at him. “That was the old me. I’ve decided if I don’t help you we won’t make rent next month because you’ll have spent all your money on take out.”
Nick spluttered. “That is not going to happen… but what’s your plan?”

The next weekend was Christian’s birthday. They were rugby mates from school so Nick had invited him and some of their other teammates, along with Tara and Darcy and a few other uni classmates, around for an impromptu get together.
Imogen had convinced Nick that this was the perfect time to order more pizza. They had spent the week prepping Nick, practicing his flirting, picking out the perfect outfit and laying out a plan on how he would ask Charlie for his number.
Nick was sitting on the couch talking to Otis when the knock on the door came. A couple of his friends made to open the door before Nick popped off the couch in a panic.
“I will get it! I will get that!” Nick called, almost tripping over Otis’ stretched out legs in his haste to reach the front door.
“Slow down, mate,” Otis laughed. “You’re acting like bloody Ariana Grande is on the other side of that door.”
Nick let out a strangled laugh as he slipped around his old classmates to get to the door. Imogen sidled up next to him, giving him a comforting pat on the shoulder. “Just be yourself, Nicky,” she murmured in his ear before she was whisked away by Sahar into the kitchen.
Nick straightened his button down shirt before swinging the door open to Charlie’s smiling face.
“Hi!”
“Hi Nick, big order tonight,” he said, his face peeking out from around the five pizzas he was holding.
Nick casually leaned against the door frame, watching as Charlie’s eyes followed the ripple of his muscles as he crossed his arms across his chest. Interesting.
“Yeah, it’s my mates birthday tonight. So just having a couple people over.”
Charlie nodded, shifting the pizzas slightly to get a better grip.
“Oh! Let me get those,” Nick said quickly, taking the pizzas and letting his hands brush over Charlie’s.
Charlie smiled at him, looking at him from under his dark eyelashes and suddenly Nick’s head was filled with nothing but Charlie’s dimples. Imogen had laid out a perfect plan to gauge Charlie’s interest and suddenly, Nick could not remember a single thing they had talked about and was horrified at the absolute word vomit that began to spew out of his mouth.
“So, like, how do you feel about boys romantically?”
Charlie’s eyebrows shot up, disappearing beneath his curls, at the sudden and dramatic subject change. “Er, what?”
“I mean–I just– you know, was wondering if you liked to eat food with– actually…” Nick trailed off, horrified with himself, his face burning.
“I’m, um, not really following,” Charlie admitted awkwardly, tilting his head at Nick in confusion.
“Me either. Here’s the money for the pizza. Have a good night, Charlie,” Nick said hurriedly, shoving the money into Charlie’s hand and quickly shutting the door.
Nick groaned, hiding his face into his hands. What had just happened? He had a plan! He practiced! Charlie probably thought he was some giant idiot now. He felt a tap on his shoulder and peeked between his fingers to see Imogen standing there with a slight frown on her face.
“Didn’t go well?” Imogen asked, biting her lip as she saw Nick’s distraught face.
“GOD, he probably thinks I’m an idiot. I’m going to be alone forever, Immy.”
Imogen wrapped an arm around Nick’s waist. “I’m sure it wasn’t that bad.”
Nick just groaned into his hands again.
“C’mon, we still have a party to host. You can mope all you want later. I promise I’ll listen and be the perfect roommate tomorrow, but for now go hang out with our friends.”
Nick shuffled into the kitchen to grab a beer as Sahar was opening the pizza boxes.
“Nick?”
Nick glanced over at Sahar, taking a big swig of his drink.
“Sorry, did you happen to order a vegetarian pizza?”
Nick walked over, looking in the boxes – three pepperonis, one combination and one Hawaiian. He furrowed his eyebrows and took the slightly greasy receipt that was taped to the front of one of the pepperoni boxes and read down the list – three pepperonis, one combination and one vegetarian.
“Shit, sorry Sahar. I think they got our order wrong. I even made sure to order the vegetarian for you!”
Imogen walked into the kitchen as Sahar began to reassure Nick it wasn’t a big deal.
“Don’t worry, Sahar, Nicholas here will call the pizza place back and order another vegetarian. Half the rugby team is here, I’m sure this Hawaiian will get eaten.”
Sahar protested, saying she’d just eat the snacks that were laid out around the apartment before Imogen quite literally shoved her out of the kitchen, telling her the new pizza would be there in about 30 minutes.
Imogen turned towards Nick with a smile on her face that Nick could only describe as mischievous and quite frankly, terrifying. Seriously, how could someone that stood at all of 5’4’’ be so scary? Nick looked at Imogen, nervously scraping at the label on his beer bottle. “Why does your face look like that?”
“This is perfect!” she exclaimed, clapping her hands together. “You have a second chance with Charlie now!”
“Wh– NO,” Nick said, catching on to what Imogen was saying. “I am never ordering pizza again. If you want to order another pizza, you can answer the door.”
“Oh, don’t be such a wuss Nicky! I’m ordering this vegetarian and you WILL answer the door or I’ll call your mum and tell her what really happened to her Santa figurine last Christmas.”
“You wouldn’t,” Nick gasped, his eyes widening.
“Try me,” Imogen said, crossing her arms over her chest and staring up at him.
Nick fiddled with his bottle, trying to see if Imogen was bluffing, but she kept staring determinedly up at him, a frown marring her face.
“Ok fine ,” Nick relented, too afraid of what Imogen was capable of (though he would never admit it). “But you’re paying.”
~ ~ ~
Nick was hiding in the bathroom when the pizza came.
“Nicholas, I have your mum on speed dial and I am prepared to call!”
Nick cracked open the bathroom door, poking his head out just slightly. “Do you actually have my mum on speed dial?”
“Do you really wanna find out?” Imogen asked, quirking an eyebrow.
Imogen grabbed onto Nick’s arm and tugged him down the hall and through the throng of people singing karaoke in the living room before shoving him unceremoniously toward the front door. “Off you pop.”
Nick shot a half-hearted glare over his shoulder at his roommate who merely innocently grinned back. When he opened the door, butterflies immediately filled his stomach at the sight of Charlie.
“Er, hi again,” Nick said, awkwardly rubbing the back of his neck.
“Hi…” Charlie answered. “Sorry we got your order wrong last time.”
“Don’t worry about it! There’s lots of rugby guys in there, no one is complaining about an extra pizza,” Nick said, forcing out a laugh.
“Right… um are you okay? You kinda rushed off there last time.”
Nick glanced at Charlie’s face. He looked genuinely concerned. This was his opening to explain himself.
“Yeah, fine!” Nick said, shoving his hands into the pocket of his jeans. “I uhm, just really had to use the toilet.”
Nick’s face turned scarlett. He did not just say that. What was his problem?
“I mean – um anyways, hey did you know the outer edge of the pizza crust is called the Cornicione ?” Nick nervously spit out.
Oh my god. Nick silently prayed that the floor would just open up and swallow him. This could not get any worse.
“Er, no, I didn’t…” Charlie said, his face a picture of bewilderment. “Um, I should get going.”
“Oh, but I didn’t pay you!”
“That’s okay!” Charlie said, taking a step back. “My manager said it was on the house, since you know we messed up. Have a good rest of your night.”
Nick grimaced, shutting the door as Imogen came to stand next to him. “Ni–”
“Please don’t say anything, Immy. It’s fine, honestly.”
“Okay…I’m just going to clear some of these empty boxes out. I’ll be right back,” Imogen said as Nick sulked off to the kitchen.
Imogen slipped out the front door and jogged down the hallways, spotting a mop of dark curly hair as she turned the corner.
“Charlie!”
Charlie turned around as Imogen stopped right in front him. “Er, yes?”
“Hi, I’m Imogen. From down the hall… Nick’s roommate?”
“Oh, hi. Was there a problem with the pizza?”
“No, no! Pizza is great! It’s actually Nick, you see he gets really nervous when he tries to flirt, especially around people he really likes.”
Charlie’s mouth dropped open. “That was flirting? He was flirting with me?”
“I know, painful,” Imogen joked. “But once you get past the awkward part, I promise he’s the best. So sweet and funny and just the best heart. And you know, he really likes you. He literally won’t shut up about you.”
“Really?” Charlie asked, looking skeptical. "I mean, I honestly think he's super cute, but like didn't think there was a chance he was interested in me. Are you sure?"
“We’ve ordered pizza from your place half a dozen times in like less than two weeks and twice tonight, what do you think?” Imogen said.
“I just assumed you guys just really liked the pizza?” Charlie laughed, shrugging his shoulders.
~ ~ ~
Nick felt a tap on his shoulder as he continued to nurse his beer at the kitchen table, the rest of his friends laughing and chattering behind him.
“Immy, please just let me sulk in peace.”
“Uhm, hi.”
Nick’s head whipped around so fast he nearly threw himself off the chair from the momentum. He quickly scrambled to his feet, running a hand through his hair.
“Charlie?! What are you doing here?”
“I uhm, forgot to give you something,” Charlie said, pulling out a piece of folded up paper and pushing it into Nick’s hand. Nick looked down at the tiny scrap of paper, unfolding it to reveal a phone number messily scrawled across it. He glanced up to see Charlie blushing, nervously rocking back and forth on his heels.
“Would you–” Nick stuttered. Charlie smiled at him, nodding and encouraging him to continue. Nick cleared his throat. “Would you like to go out to dinner with me sometime?”
Charlie’s face lit up in a bright smile. “Yeah, I’d really like that”
“Yeah, cool,” Nick said, returning Charlie’s smile.
“I, uh, should get back to work, but text me okay?” Charlie said, reaching out to squeeze Nick’s hand. Nick nodded, walking Charlie to the front door.
“Oh and Nick?”
“Yeah?”
“Anywhere but pizza for dinner okay?” Charlie said, his eyes shining.
Nick laughed. “Yeah, I think that can be arranged.”
