Work Text:

Oda and Ango had decided to retire after many years of hard work.

It wasn’t that they hated their jobs. They were just drained after working so much for so long. Plus, they had five kids to take care of, which took up more time than one would expect. Along with the fact that there had been an accident which left Ango with a permanent limp in his right leg.

With the dangers of their lifestyle at the time getting worse, they decided to leave. One more risky mission could have been it for Ango, and Oda had brushed with death more times than ever before. So, they decided to fully fill out the adoption papers for the kids, which had the curry shop owner as their guardian. He had happily helped them with the paperwork to hand the kids over.

Then, they’d found a house far outside of Yokohama, and moved.

Of course, the kids had been excited to get their own bedrooms. Something that was only possible by using all the money they had gotten from the mafia and government while they were working for them. Dazai had also spent a great deal of his own money when he figured out they were moving. He’d wanted them to have the best of the best, and to be able to visit.

However, finding a school, and enrolling five kids had been hard. Ango had done most of the paperwork, while Oda found the best school for the kids. After that, they were mostly settled, and could enjoy their new life together.

It only took a few months for the kids to start asking them if they were married, which they were. They never had a ceremony, as there weren’t people they wanted to be there besides the kids, and Dazai. So, they didn’t bother spending money on it, and just got the rings, and filled out the paperwork.

For several days after that, they were asked all sorts of questions about why they didn’t have a wedding. Until, eventually, it became a boring topic, and the kids moved on.

The house they’d moved into was two stories, and by the ocean. It was on the other side of Japan from Yokohama. Their past was as far away as it could be without crossing the ocean.

One summer morning, Oda and Ango were awoken to Sakura and Kousuke running into their room and jumping on the bed. Both groaned at being woken up so early on a weekend in the summer. The couple liked sleeping in, and the kids had lots of stuff to keep them busy while they slept. However, they weren’t lucky enough to be left alone.

“Can we go to the beach to play today?” Sakura implored.

“Sure, but in a bit, it’s too early still,” Oda mumbled, rolling over to hold Ango from behind.

The sound of excited children could be heard after the two left the room. It made them realize they wouldn’t be getting more sleep, and would likely have to get up sooner rather than later to get everyone ready for the day.

It took a while before they got up, but when they did, it became a rush to get out the door. The kids were the opposite of patient, and they didn’t want to wait any longer, so Oda ended up only able to get them to wear sunscreen before they left the house.

They lived close to the beach, so Ango smiled and told Oda to watch the kids while he grabbed everything else they’d need. Giving his husband a smile, he ran out the door after the kids. Ango slowly packed, knowing they’d need snacks, drinks, more sunscreen, floaties, and towels.

Taking his time, he gathered everything, before heading to the beach himself. Walking the short distance there, he felt joyful. It wasn’t often they went on a family trip anywhere, so, even if the beach was near their house, it was one of the few times they’d gone there together.

Reaching the beach, Oda waved at him from where he was standing, watching the kids splash about in the water. Together, they set up the stuff, and laid out a bedsheet to sit on, and place all their stuff on. Then, Ango leaned on Oda, smiling as he watched their kids play together.

Oda hugged him from behind, and they both felt so glad to be able to be a family. To raise their kids, who they’d adopted because Oda cared about them so much. Even though Ango used to not be much of a kid person, he became one once he had his own to care for.

So, there on that summer day, the family all felt so happy.
