Work Text:
Tony, the brilliant scion of a powerful noble family, strode purposefully through the bustling commercial sector of New Manhatten. His sharp mind was focused on the task at hand: negotiating a trade agreement with the local merchants that would benefit his interests. But Tony was troubled, as a brilliant inventor his sharp mind and natural charisma had brought him to the top of the country’s scientific community, where he was revered for his contributions to the field of affordable energy; but his genius and wealth had also made him powerful enemies among the political elite, who saw him as a threat to their own ambitions.
As he approached the merchant buildings, he noticed a tall, broad-shouldered man watching him intently from a nearby alleyway. The man's rugged features were etched with the hard-won lines of a soldier, and his dark eyes held a hint of danger. Tony recognized Sergeant James Barnes, a taciturn ex-soldier who had seen too much of the world's ugliness and brutality. He was handsome in a rugged, weathered sort of way, with a face that hinted at both pain and strength. The two men had met briefly the previous month and Tony had been intrigued by the soldier's quiet strength and his a fierce loyalty to his friends, the infamous Rogues. From the moment they met, there was an undeniable chemistry between them, and Tony was keen to meet the handsome man again.
"Good day, Sergeant," Tony said, approaching with a friendly smile. "What brings you here today?"
Sergeant Barnes grunted in response, eyeing Tony warily. "Just passing through," he muttered.
Tony sensed the soldier's unease and naturally decided to probe further. "Is something troubling you, Sergeant? You seem … preoccupied."
The soldier hesitated before finally speaking. "I've been offered a job," he said, his voice low and rough. "A job that goes against everything I stand for these days. But I have debts to repay."
Tony frowned, sensing a dilemma weighing heavily on the soldier's mind. "What kind of job?"
"Assassination," the soldier said bluntly. "A wealthy business man has hired me to eliminate his business rival. I did not want to take the job, but I don't know how else to make ends meet."
Tony felt a surge of anger at the business man's callous disregard for another life, as he tried to comprehend the soldier's predicament. "You have a difficult decision to make, Sergeant," he said quietly. "But I urge you to remember your principles. Your friends have sworn to uphold justice and protect the innocent. Can you live with the consequences of them finding you have taken another's life like this?"
The soldier's eyes flickered with emotion, and Tony could see the internal struggle written across his face. "I don't know," he whispered. "I just don't know."
They both knew this decision could have devastating consequences for Sargent Barnes as well as the Rogues.
For a long moment, Tony was silent, but he knew that he had not misjudged the man's character. He laid a hand on the soldier's shoulder, his own mind racing with possible solutions. "Let me help you, Sergeant," he said firmly. "I have resources. We can find another way to settle your debts without compromising your integrity."
The soldier's eyes met Tony' with a mix of gratitude and relief. "Thank you," he said quietly.
At that moment Tony saw a solution to both their dilemmas recalling how there were those who feared him and resented his success.
"I'll help you, in fact I’ll employ you" he said. "I need protection, a bodyguard. You would be ideal. I know you were a skilled fighter in the military, and you know I will pay well.” Tony stopped, while feeling a surge of satisfaction at being able to both help someone in need, and solve his own personal security concerns.
Barnes nodded "I'll make sure nothing happens to you," he said immediately. "I'll be your bodyguard, your shield.” He paused, then fully looked at Tony with his dark hair and a well-groomed beard, strong jawline and clear brown eyes. Taking a deep breath he continued “Starting now, you need to know that you should not trust your closest advisor, Stane".
Tony looked at him sharply his quick mind racing ahead. “Are you implying I was the potential victim? And that Stane hired you?”
Barnes nodded warily
Tony’s smile faded, and he took a step back. "Oh, well, that's not very friendly of him, is it?"
Barnes didn't respond, just stared at him with troubled eyes.
"Well, I'm afraid I can't let you do that. Killing me would be a terrible waste of my intelligence."
Barnes softly chuckled at Tony’s response.
Despite this undeniably rocky start, they ended up developing a strange friendship, built on their mutual respect and admiration for each other's skills. James working as Tony’s bodyguard was a decision that would change their lives as they worked together to navigate the removal of Stane from his position of power. They grew closer, and Tony found his attraction was not onesided as it blossomed into something more.
Tony had always been driven by his intellect, but it was his kind impulse that led him to helping James. They found out that together, they were unstoppable, and as they faced each new challenge, they did so knowing that they had each other's backs. James had become more than just his bodyguard; he was his friend, his confidant, his protector.
