No grave can hold my body down, I'll crawl home to her.

Summary:

He stood up and took the dress in his hands. The material was soft to the touch, mostly cotton, but still relatively cheap.

Will folded his arms over his chest and smiled at him. Hannibal smiled back until Will tilted his head and said, “Do you want to try it on?”

Chapter 1: Bloom

Chapter Text

Will was going through his closet with Hannibal over to throw away old clothes and make space for the clothes his lover bought him.

Hannibal was sitting on Will’s bed reading when he was interrupted by a giggling Will shouting, “Oh my God, Hannibal. Look at this!”

Hannibal turned to look at Will who was holding up a light pink knee length dress. Hannibal smiled and sat up, putting his book down to give all his attention to Will.

“Is there something wrong with the color?” Hannibal joked. Will chuckled and held it up to his front in his full length mirror. He grinned at how it looked against his body.

“I didn't even know I still had this. This was what I wore to my dad’s wedding. That was, what, 4 years ago now?”

Hannibal beamed up at him. Will seldom spoke of himself pre-transition, so when he did, Hannibal hung on every word. He always was supportive of Will, even pitching in to help fund his top surgery when he had it years ago.

He stood up and took the dress in his hands. The material was soft to the touch, mostly cotton, but still relatively cheap.

Will folded his arms over his chest and smiled at him. Hannibal smiled back until Will tilted his head and said, “Do you want to try it on?”

Hannibal stood there stunned at the profiler in front of him. Will let out a soft laugh as he raised his eyebrows.

“I know that look. I'm sure I had that same look on my face when I bought my first suit.” He grinned and nodded toward the dress.

Hannibal looked back at it, at himself in the mirror, and back at Will. He sighed dramatically and started changing out of his clothes. Will covered his mouth to suppress a laugh seeing the Doctor about to change into his cheap dress.

“Don't laugh.” He said in all the seriousness he could muster at the moment.

Will failed to cover his laughter but shook his head and handed Hannibal the dress.

“You in a thrift store dress, forgive me, Doctor .” Will teased with a smile on his face. Hannibal gave him a death glare but turned his head to hide his own smirk.

Your thrift store dress, Will.” He paused.

“Could you… help me?”

Will nodded and moved to zip up the back of the dress. Hannibal looked at the mirror and looked at Will, who was now smiling widely.

He slipped an arm around her waist.

“Look at you, honey.” He said softly. “How do you feel?” Will rested his other hand on her shoulder.

“Good.” Hannibal said. “I didn't expect it to fit me.”

“Mm, You look good, too. I weighed a bit more back then.” He said with a laugh, Hannibal flushed at the praise.

“We're still throwing this one out, though, it's got a hole in the side.” He turned her around and lifted her arm up so she could see.

“Not a major loss.” Hannibal said quietly.

“What was that?”

“Your dress. Cheap.”

“Oh, is it? You're still wearing it, love.”

Chapter Text

“Will! Come here, please!” Hannibal shouted from the bathroom. Will was initially worried because her tone sounded fearful at first, but when he saw her he couldn’t help but laugh.

“No, no. Stop this, William.” She said quietly, hiding her face in the top of her lacy sleep shirt. Doing so, her uneven, shoulder length haircut swished back and forth. “Okay, okay, I’m sorry,” He said through his laughter. “What did you do, baby?”

“I thought the sides made my face look…” She motioned to her hair and put the scissors down. “... Masculine .” Will sighed, moved to lean up against the counter to face his girlfriend.

“Look at me, Han.” She complied, “It’s a long journey to get to the point where you like looking in the mirror. But you will get there, and I’ll be right there next to you the whole time, okay?” He said softly as he bought up a hand to gently wipe away tears from her cheeks.

“...But until then, how about I fix this up a bit, hm?” He said with a smile, slowly running his hands through her hair. She gave a toothy grin and blushed and let him do just that.

They kissed, she cried some more, and they fell asleep in each other's arms as always. It would be a long time before she could believe all of Will’s compliments he gave her or feel like she was a real enough woman for him, but she did believe that they could get there together.
