Lying on Rooftops and Counting Stars

Summary:

*Originally posted Feb 3rd, 2022*
"Tom we have that vlog early in the morning, why do you have all this energy right now? It's well past your bedtime and you've been making me go to sleep early this week to prepare for the vlog," Tubbo yawned, "This is torture bossman."

"Because you'll enjoy it once you do it." Tommy ensured and opened their window climbing onto the roof after grabbing their duvet. Tubbo followed him and Tommy laid the blanket out for them to lay on. Tubbo stayed curled into Tommy and Tommy's hoodie (that he totally didn't steal out of Tommy's luggage.)

"See, this isn't bad." Tommy said and Tubbo just scoffed looking up at the sky. If Tommy noticed his smile, he didn't mention it.

Tubbo and Tommy watch a movie together and Tommy gets the idea to lay on the roof and watch the stars. Their relationship faces its first challenge months later so they return to the roof.

Mid 2022

“It’s too cold for this shit.” Tubbo grumbled. “And we need to unpack.”

“It’s not even that cold outside, Toby. And we can unpack in the morning. It's like midnight.” Tommy grabbed Tubbo’s hand and started pulling him towards their bedroom. The rooftop outside their window would be a perfect place to lay and watch the stars.

Sure, Tubbo was right and they should at least unpack comfy clothes to change into for bed with their unmade bed and just duvet thrown on top but that could be a later issue.

“Tom, we have that vlog early in the morning, why do you have all this energy right now? It’s well past your bedtime and you’ve been making me go to sleep early this week to prepare for the vlog,” Tubbo yawned, “this is torture bossman.”

“Because you’ll enjoy it once you do it.” Tommy ensured and opened their window climbing onto the roof after grabbing their duvet. Tubbo followed him and Tommy laid the blanket out for them to lay on. Tubbo stayed curled into Tommy and Tommy’s hoodie (that he totally didn’t steal out of Tommy’s luggage)

“See, this isn’t bad.” Tommy said and Tubbo just scoffed looking up at the sky. If Tommy noticed his smile, he didn’t mention it.

“Okay, Tommy. It’s us against Tubbo and Jack. I’m going to teach you the art of tactical flirting.” Ranboo said. Both ’teams’ got to talk before they started the match. It would be a simple vlog then Tommy and Tubbo would go home and unpack while Ranboo streamed or whatever he had planned for his cult followers.

“Like hell that would work on Tubbo, he’s well.. he's Tubbo.”

Ranboo blinked at him, “Tommy. It’ll work.”

“Fine, whatever you say.” Tommy waved his hand a bit and went to his spot on the court.

They started the game and Tommy decided to use Ranboo’s flirting tactic while Tubbo was serving. “Tubs, that shirt looks stunning on you big man!”

Tubbo missed a serve for the first time that evening and his face was dark red. He literally stood and blinked at Tommy for a moment before he went back onto the court to receive Tommy’s serve.

Perhaps this would work.

-

Tommy and Ranboo won the game. With Ranboo’s skill and Tommy’s flirts it was inevitable.

“Well, this was great boys!” Tommy said and wrapped his arm around Tubbo’s shoulders, kissing his head. “But me and the husband have to get home.”

Tubbo simply short circuited at being called Tommy’s husband. “It was great to see you again, king.” Tommy said to Jack and Jack smiled.

“Likewise mate, see you soon.” Jack made his way to his Uber.

“You’ll be good to get home?” Tommy asked Ranboo who took his face mask off.

“Yeah, I’ve got only one more night alone before yknow.” Ranboo smiled a bit, his face starting to match Tubbo’s in blush.

“I’m still good to give you a lift to the airport. If Toby is awake I’ll let him come with so I’m not third wheeling.”

“It would be cool of you all to meet in person. But he’s not from California like me.” Ranboo said, fixing his hair a bit.

“Where are they from then?” Tubbo asked, finally out of his daze.

“New York. But not like the city, just some little town in the western part of the state.” Ranboo said, “But I should let you guys get back, I know that you need to unpack.”

“Oh shit!” Tubbo said, “I forgot! We should go, Toms, we have a busy few days.”

“Alright well goodbye big man.” Tommy smiled.

“Goodbye Bitch.” Ranboo smirked and Tubbo waved, leading him and Tommy away to their car. (Tommy driving of course)

The two made it home and unpacked their boxes. It eventually got late enough for Tommy to start dinner while Tubbo made their bed.

Tubbo walked into the kitchen minutes later with a pout on his face.

“It’s raining.” Tubbo said, looking out the window as the aroma of steak filled the house. Tommy simply hummed. “Tom, it’s like downpouring.”

“I heard you, Toby. Why does it matter? We’re not going anywhere tonight.” Tommy put something that looked like vegetables into a small pot and onto the stove.

Tubbo pouted, “we can’t lay on the roof and look at the stars if it’s raining.”

Tommy walked over and grabbed Tubbo’s waist, pulling him so they were close and placed a kiss on his head. “Baby, I have that star projector, we can just use that in our room for tonight.”

“You would get it out for me?” Tubbo looked up with a soft look in his eyes and Tommy just smiled, pressing their lips sweetly together.

“Of course.” Tommy kept his smile as he talked then made his way back to the stove.

Tommy finished dinner and they ate everything, deciding they could do dishes in the morning. Tommy led them to their room and dug through the two unpacked boxes of Tommy’s office stuff and he got the projector out, setting it up on the floor at the foot of the bed and allowing the room to fill with stars and planets.

Tommy laid on the bed with Tubbo and they curled into each other. Tubbo pointed out the constellations before they talked about future stream plans and eventually went to sleep.

*

“I’m excited to meet them!” Tubbo was practically bouncing in his seat as they waited for Ranboo and his ‘mystery’ lover to leave the airport. Tommy would be driving them back to Ranboo’s place.

Tubbo and Tommy have never talked to Ranboo’s partner for long, only a few things here and there but with him not being into the content creating world and only being in the position of a viewer it was tough to talk to them much.

“Oh look!” Tubbo motioned to Ranboo leaving the airport with a shorter raven haired person. They had their hands interlocked and Ranboo looked genuinely the happiest the two had ever seen him.

They made their way to the car and Ranboo put his partner’s luggage into the boot of the car then opened the door for them. Ranboo got a ‘thank you’ before he made his way into the car as well.

“Okay.” Ranboo said, “Tom, Toby, Meet Mason. Mason, meet Tom and Toby.”

Mason laughed a bit, “I’m fine with calling them Tommy and Tubbo, Boo. If that’s what you guys are comfortable with?” Mason looked to the two in the front.

“Whatever works for you.” Tommy said, “Tubs and I call each other either most of the time with no real reason behind it, only being used to calling each other that for streams and what not. And we all know Boo is comfortable with Ranboo but Toby and I don’t care much about it.”

“Okay,” Mason said, “I’ll stick to whatever comes out at the time then.” Mason offered a smile and Ranboo just looked glad that everything was going well.

“Well since we have you,” Tubbo started as Tommy started driving, “tell us about yourself, Bossman.”

“Well, I’m 18 like you all. I’m 5’5. I like to ski a lot and I also like to play minecraft. I uhm, I’ve wrote a few books from when I was 16-17. I uhm I do a lot of discord modding for larger discord servers. Oh and I like the sunrise better than the sunset so my sleep schedule is fucked, but then again my boyfriend has lived in the UK so I wasn’t expecting it to be great.”

“Well, we have someone to play Minecraft with now, if you want of course. We won’t make you be on streams or in videos if you don’t want to be.” Tubbo said and Ranboo was just watching Mason with love sick eyes.

“I wouldn’t mind it now that I’m here with this idiot. When we were doing long distance I rejected his offers in case the fans didn’t like me but I would be honored to join you guys for streams and videos!” Mason smiled and Ranboo melted into a pile.

“Minecraft but Ranboo’s partner makes it 1000 times funnier.” Tommy said with a snort and everyone laughed at it.

“I’ve watched those vids.” Mason said, “they’re more entertaining than those mining streams.”

“You said you liked my mining streams!” Ranboo exclaimed and Mason faced him.

“No, I do. I love them so much.”

“Good.” Ranboo smiled and Mason just shook their head a bit.

Tommy laughed a bit, “well it was great to meet you, Mason and we’ll talk soon yeah?” Tommy put the car in park outside of Ranboo’s place.

“It was nice to meet you both!”

“Likewise, Mason.” Tubbo smiled and Mason got out.

“Talk soon?” Ranboo asked and both Tubbo and Tommy nodded.

“Love ya, bossman.” Tubbo smiled and Ranboo reciprocated his love for his friends before leaving and grabbing Mason’s luggage and bringing him to the house.

Tommy took Tubbo’s hand as they drove off and Tubbo leaned his head on Tommy’s arm, yawning.

“Are you streaming when we get home?”

“You know I am, baby.” Tommy said softly. “But I could always do a no face cam stream and you can cuddle with me while I stream. I know you slept like shit last night.”

“Thank you.” Tubbo spoke softly and only moved away from Tommy when he had to get out of the car so they could go inside.

Tommy sat in his chair and Tubbo made himself comfortable on Tommy’s lap, tucking his face into Tommy’s neck and letting him start the stream. Tommy stayed muted so he could let people come in.

“You can turn face cam on.” Tubbo said in a whisper, “They can handle soft TommyInnit for one stream.”

Tommy chuckled and changed from his starting soon screen to Minecraft and turned his camera on when he unmuted, “welcome back to the stream boys!” Tommy didnt shout as loud but he did open a coke behind Tubbo’s back and take a sip. “Today, Tubbo is sleep deprived and wanted cuddles so he’ll be having a rest while I do some Origins. I’m pretty sure Ranboo is joining us.”

Tommy paused to read chat, “oh you guys like the stars in the background? I’m glad. I honestly got busy with running Ranboo around this morning that I forgot to turn them off after having them on last night. When Tubbo isn’t sleeping he can tell you guys all the interesting stars on our walls and ceiling.”

Tommy heard someone join the call and he greeted Phil while getting onto the server.

The stream had gone well, as expected.

Tommy set Tubbo in their bed once the stream was over and decided to make them food, they hadn’t eaten since breakfast (which was curt) and Tubbo needed energy to do an ungodly stream while Tommy did editing.

Now that they were unpacked and got Mason and Ranboo together successfully, they could fuck up their schedules till one of them would have something planned where they would need to fix them for a few days.

After Tubbo woke up, they ate and then Tubbo streamed. He was playing CSGO with a group and Tommy was editing. Tommy’s set up was in their room, while Tubbo’s was in their living room. They had setups in their two guest rooms as well since 90% of their friends were content creators/gamers who would appreciate it.

Tubbo had called Tommy at some point, probably to annoy him but Tommy was getting to the point where his brain was going mush and he more than likely needed another coke but was so into editing that he didn’t feel he could stop.

“Hey baby.” Tommy spoke softly, he honestly forgot about the stream and would see clips when he woke up at an undetermined time later. “I’m getting some of this video done but I might ask Larry to do some of it if he finished the other one.”

Tubbo chuckled, he was wearing a fond smile and chat was adoring the softness of Tommy, TommyInnit was out of the window and they all thought it was endearing, “Do what you need, Toms.”

“I will, but only because I want cuddles.” Tommy let out a breath, “I miss you, when will you be done?”

“When will you be done? I don’t want to make you stop editing so soon if you still want to, but you should get a coke or juice to drink please. Preferably a juice so you actually get some sleep.” Tubbo was now growing soft. “I will cuddle with you after you go get juice.”

“Promise?”

“I promise.” Tubbo said, “Also, it’s raining again.”

“That sucks. We can turn the projector back on and put a new slide into it for different stars and whatnots.”

“Nebulas.” Tubbo said.

“Nebulas.” Tommy repeated, then yawned, his voice losing his hoarseness a tad, “I’m getting up to get juice now.”

Tommy left his chair away from his desk and made his way out of their room. Tommy walked over to Tubbo once he got his juice and wrapped his arms around Tubbo and the chair from behind kissing his cheek. “Hey baby.” Tommy whispered.

“Hey Tom.” Tubbo smiled and let Tommy move to the side of him and tuck his head into Tubbo’s neck.

“‘M tired.”

“I know.” Tubbo said, massaging Tommy’s scalp. “I can end and we can go to sleep.”

“But my video.” Tommy groaned.

“Then edit your video, bub.” Tubbo said, “or wait till we wake up.”

“They’re gonna make a lot of clips about this.” Tommy said, “I’ll head out so you can finish whatever you were doing. Just come to the room soon so we can go to bed.” Tommy pulled his face away and held his hand up to cover their mouths as he pressed their lips together.

They kept their kiss short and Tommy dropped his hand pressing a kiss to Tubbo’s nose before pulling away from Tubbo completely and messing with his hair, “have fun editing.”

“Have fun streaming.” Tommy strode off to their bedroom.

Tommy stopped editing when Tubbo went into their room. Tommy set the projector up and they talked about stars before sleeping.

*

The next night they actually got to lay on their roof on a blanket.

“I prefer the real stars.” Tubbo said, his head on Tommy’s chest while Tommy played with his hair.

“I just like being able to be with you, but you’re right, being out here is much better.” Tommy kissed Tubbo’s head. “I love you, Toby.”

“And I love you, Tom.”

2023 - Current Time

“So I should expect awkward tension.” Mason said, “and I should let them glare at each other?”

“Pretty much.” Ranboo said with a sigh, “I know it’s tough because they’re both our friends but there’s simply nothing we can do about it.”

“I wish we could.” Mason said, “but whatever gets the job done, I suppose.” Mason took Ranboo’s hand and let Ranboo lead them into Tubbo’s flat.

Wilbur, Phil, Aimsey, Serena, Freddie and Bill were all in the living room. Tubbo and Tommy were nowhere to be seen. There were cameras setup around the room and the game of monopoly was on the table. “Where are they?” Ranboo asked after he and Mason greeted everyone.

“In the kitchen.” Phil said, “we’ve been avoiding going in there honestly.”

“I’ll be right back okay?” Ranboo asked and Mason nodded accepting a kiss on the cheek before making his way to the cricket crew. Ranboo went towards the kitchen.

“I can just fucking leave.” Tommy said as Ranboo entered and Tubbo was pinching the bridge of his nose.

“You don’t have to leave, we can do this stream like nothing is wrong.” Tubbo said. “Then you can go back to Wilbur’s.”

“Or you guys can talk about your issues?” Ranboo suggested and they both jumped not realizing he was there. “Because I think you’re both being idiots.”

“Ranboo, go back with the group. You don’t need to worry about our shit.” Tommy said and Tubbo agreed.

Ranboo just rolled his eyes, “Tommy is sleeping here tonight. Wilbur is already drinking which means he’s not going back to his house. Serena and Aimsey are taking one spare room. Me and Mason are taking the other. Freddie and Bill are taking the couch. Phil and Wilbur are taking the floor in the living room so that leaves Tommy with.. well you, Tubbo.”

Both Tommy and Tubbo glared at each other, “no way in hell.” They both said and Ranboo only smiled.

“Sounds like you guys will have a real fun time tonight! Now let’s go play before I slap you both!” Ranboo put his mask on and the three of them left the kitchen to go to the living room.

Let the Epic IRL Monopoly Stream begin.

-

Everyone made their way to their assigned places and Tommy just sat at the unused (as of recently) desk. He just watched as Tubbo sat on his bed.

“After I know everyone is situated I’ll go get a blanket from the hall closet and sleep on the floor or in this chair.” Tommy said and Tubbo nodded and looked out the window.

“It’s been raining a lot lately.” Tubbo pointed out.

“Yeah, a lot since I went to Wil’s.” Tommy said, “how have you been holding up alone? I know it’s only been a month and a half but you’re not someone who takes being alone well.”

“Ranboo and Mason have been keeping me company.” Tubbo said, “I’ve ordered out a lot food wise and slept a lot more. I guess I just get bored enough to catch up on sleep. I’ve had a healthy stream schedule too.”

“I noticed.” Tommy pointed out, “the stream schedule I mean.”

Tubbo nodded, “I noticed you haven’t posted any videos and only streamed once. No facecam, under an hour.”

Tommy inhaled, “I didn’t want to give away that I wasn’t home- uh sorry, here.”

“I never said this wasn’t your home anymore, Tommy. You just decided to leave.” Tubbo spoke softer at this. “We have two extra rooms that you could have stayed in if being too close to me was the issue.”

“I left because I was sure you wouldn’t want me around, shit got out of hand fast, Tubbo.”

“You called me Tubbo.” Tubbo pointed out.

“Yeah, it’s practically your name.”

“Yeah..” Tubbo said. He can’t remember the last time Tommy didn’t call him Toby in private. It was weird.

“It’s not raining.” Tubbo said. Tommy looked towards the window and nodded.

“It’s not.”

Tubbo grabbed the duvet off his bed and went to the window, opening it and climbing out onto the roof, “you coming?”

Tommy stood up and followed him out, sitting on the blanket with him.

They both leaned back on their hands, their hands close to touching but not quite. Tommy turned on ‘Honey, It's Alright’ by Gregory Alan Isakov as they just watched the sky in silence.

  Wake up, it's morning

Wake up, my darling

Wake up and see for yourself

You were woven in patchwork

Clouded and hazed

In your past like a lover can be

Tommy looked at Tubbo and sighed a bit, they had fought over something happening between their fans. They had been perfectly fine before fans started getting involved in their relationship spreading lies and rumors creating a toxic environment.

It had been a shame that they fought. They never ended their relationship they just kept yelling and arguing and so Tommy went to Wilbur’s for a night to let them both breathe but a night turned into a week and phone calls weren’t pleasant between the two even then.

So they agreed to have some space knowing the monopoly stream had been planned two months now.

Honey, it's alright

Tommy looked back up at the sky and Tubbo looked at him.

Tubbo could see the tears forming in Tommy’s eyes. He wanted to wipe them away and pepper Tommy’s face in reassuring kisses but it wouldn’t be that easy. He would just have to sit there and watch as a tear fell.

Honey, it's alright

He got to watch as Tommy didn’t even wipe the tear.

Tubbo’s eyes closed for a moment as guilt started to form cracks in his chest. He had been the unreasonable one after all and yet Tommy was the one who left home.

It's alright to be

Alone

Tubbo opened his eyes and faced the sky again. Tommy watched as he teared up as well.

It's alright

Honey, it's alright

It's alright to be

Alone

Tommy opened his mouth to speak but he just closed it again. He honestly didn’t know what to say to help Tubbo stop crying. He could always catch a cab back to Wilbur’s.

Tubbo wasn’t happy with Tommy around, the tears were making that clear and it hurt. Tommy could feel his heart cracking at the thought.

Despite all our shuffling

Our train wreck a-talking

Despite all our outfield saves

Treading water

The sea was your daughter

But now she's gone

Tommy looked up at the sky again as another tear fell.

Gone

Tommy let out a shaky breath and moved his hand so it was resting on Tubbo’s.

Tubbo didn’t pull his hand away and only moved his hand to be under Tommy’s better.

It's alright

Tommy smiled a bit and Tubbo mirrored. They had soft, sad smiles on their faces as the stars brought false light to their eyes.

Honey, it's alright

It's alright to be alone

Tubbo shuffled closer to Tommy and Tommy moved closer as well. Sure this wouldn’t fix their issues and solve their problems but it could at least ease something.

Honey, it's alright

Tommy lifted his hand to wrap it around Tubbo’s shoulders, Tubbo leaned into Tommy and played with his free hand.

Honey, it's alright

Tommy let out a breath as it started sprinkling. Perhaps it was best for the rain. At least their tears could be hidden by the water.

They would need to go inside soon but that could wait. Things would be bad inside. But out here under the comfort of the stars (and Nebulas) they could be safe with each other.

To be amongst the rubble and stone

*

Tommy got off the chair and made his way out the kitchen. Everyone was still well asleep which was for the best. He needed silence to think.

He went to the kitchen and started making food for everyone, noticing the lack of missing food since he left. The milk had been replaced but other than that there wasn’t much missing.

He noticed his cokes and juices hadn’t moved much but the only difference was notes taped to both. ‘Don’t drink please’. Tommy knew Tubbo had some business related meetings at the house since he was gone but Tommy wouldn’t care if someone had drunk them, normally when they had guests over it was fine.

Tommy finished making breakfast and just sat at the island on his phone drinking a juice.

He heard someone come out to kitchen and open the fridge, “you can have a juice if you want.”

“They say not to drink them.”

Tommy chuckled, “you can have one. Trust me.”

The fridge closed a moment after and the person sat next to Tommy. “How was last night?”

“It was..” Tommy paused, “it was like a weird fever dream.”

“I think you guys needed some time to see each other. Texting and calls haven’t been enough to really show you each how bad you’re both hurting.”

“Mason, we went on the roof and sat in silence. We both shed a few tears, sure, but that won’t fix things. I love him too much to lose him and fighting all the time we were was making me lose him.” Tommy sighed.

“I told you that’s why it was good you left, Toms.” Mason grabbed a piece of bacon and bit into it giving half to Tommy.

Tommy bit into his half, “I know. And you were right.” Tommy finished his piece and set his head down on his arms on the counter top. “This is hard.”

Mason rubbed Tommy’s back, “You guys will be okay. This is just a small bump in the road but soon you’ll get past it.”

“You sure? Because I’m not sure you and Ranboo fight. And I’m not willing to take advice from someone who hasn’t been through something.”

Mason chuckled, “We fight more than we let on. It’s just how things go. But we get over it because fights are dumb and you’ll realize how stupid you both were when it’s over, then you can laugh about it later on. Like the other day, Boo and I fought over dish towels. It was a full on screaming match but then we settled down and talked out the issue and now it’s just ridiculous to think about.”

Tommy laughed a bit, “that’s ridiculous.”

Mason smiled a bit when Tommy lifted his head, “shall we go disrupt the peace?”

“You speak my language!” Tommy smiled and jumped up, Mason following.

They woke everyone in the house up to eat.

Tommy started doing dishes while everyone talked about in the living room, picking a movie everyone would like.

Tubbo stood next to Tommy to help him and Tommy let him help. They stayed silent as they washed, occasionally bumping hands. Before they would laugh about it but now they just stayed silent.

Once they finished they faced each other and Tommy opened his arms and Tubbo stepped into the hug gripping onto Tommy’s sweatshirt. Tommy rubbed his back as he felt Tubbo start crying.

“I’m sorry, Toms.. I should have handled it all better, really. And I feel like such a dick about it.”

Tommy kissed Tubbo’s head, “it’s okay, Toby. I forgive you and I’m sorry about how I reacted as well. We both should have been more mature.”

“Can we just agree to never let this happen again? Please?”

“Of course, baby.” Tommy pulled them away a bit so they could kiss properly, tears and all.

They returned to their friends with their fingers interlocked.

*

They were lying on the roof. Tubbo was curled into Tommy’s chest and the sky was clear. No rain, no clouds. Nothing.

Clear sky, clear stars.

Tommy kissed Tubbo on the head gently as Tubbo rambled about Nebulas. It was endearing how passionate Tubbo was about space and Tommy would listen to his rambles everyday if he could.

But today was a day he got to hear it, so he would listen to each word carefully because today was perfectly enough.
