Meteor Shower (Quick, Take Cover) || gustholomule week 2023

Summary:

Gus looked over at his friend, who was hopelessly trying to mask his obviously red face with fake confidence. Matt definitely hoped it could be blamed on the heat. Gus snorted lightly. He was going to regret this.

Work Text:

"You should go on a date with me"

It was a warm summer day on the Boiling Isles. The sky was clear and the sun was shining in a way that didn't cause your skin to burn and feel like it's getting deep fried, on its way to go into a fairy's Boiling Burger's order.

Amity and Luz had just left for a date of their own. They hung out with Gus and Matt before going off for some eyes cream.

Gus looked over at his friend, who was hopelessly trying to mask his obviously red face with fake confidence. Matt definitely hoped it could be blamed on the heat. Gus snorted lightly. He was going to regret this.

"Pfft. Yeah sure."

There was (clearly audible) knocking at the door.

Gus rushed downstairs as soon as he heard it and dashed towards the door, defending it as if his life depended on it as his dad, who was about to twist its knob open gave him a confused look, which slowly turned into an 'I know what you are' one. Gus waved his hand dismissively.

"I got this." He said trying to sound innocent, embarrassment painting on his face.

Perry sighed. He stepped back and allowed his son to open the door.

Gus did just that and was greeted by a scrawny looking boy, dressed so ducking stupidly. He had a leather jacket with spikes on its shoulders, a huge belt that did not fulfill its purpose, a blue 'weezer' shirt (he it got from Amity after she helped Luz with going through her old stuff), black flare trousers with lots of pockets (and a chain attached to them). He also had boots that were at least 3 sizes too big for him.

"Hello Augustus. Good evening Mr.Porter" Matt said, trying to sound as casual as possible, shaking Perry's hand.

"Nice to see you again, young man. You two better be back by 10pm."

Mr.Porter knew who the boy was, as he had visited this house multiple times before. Too many times to count.

"What? Oh c'mon."

"You heard me"

"Dad" Gus whined "Come on I'm fifteen. I can watch over myself"

"Actually… I'm afraid we won't be able to come back by that time. I have something planned that requires……. Dark." Matt interrupted, smiling awkwardly, putting a finger up to his face.

The two of them walked, awkward tension between them.

The sun was just about to set. It was breathtaking, the different array of colors blending together to create a beautiful canvas painted onto the sky. The sun's rays sunk deeper into the clouds with each passing second.

Gus tried to start a conversation with a classic "so where are you taking me" and "how long do you plan on this thing to be" but the only response he got from Matt was "Just be patient, you'll find out when you find out".

Gus was about to start complaining about the distance, when Matt suddenly stopped walking.

They were standing on a grass covered cliff over the boiling sea. The sky has already gone dark, the sun hidden behind the horizon. You could see the Titan's Skull in the distance.

The taller witch looked in its direction, when something caught his eye. It was a shooting star.

He was just about to turn around and flex to Matt about his observation, when he noticed another one. And another one. And suddenly the whole sky was covered in thousands of shining streaks.

Gus had been absolutely taken aback by the view. He looked over at Matt, pure awe in his eyes. He wanted to say something but could think of the right words. The shorter witch just smirked before sitting down and gesturing to the other boy to sit next to him.

Matt starts talking about something, but Gus can't even bother to catch what he's saying. He just looked at him. And looked. And looked. And let his thoughts wander back to the time when they were separated after The Day of Unity, then to their regular visits at the graveyard, then to the day they first discovered said graveyard, the beginning of their friendship. Then he remembered the H.A.S., how they met. He couldn't help the feeling of thousands of butterflies inside his chest. He couldn't help the feeling of his head spinning around Matt like crazy. He couldn't help looking at the other witch, like it was the most breathtaking view ever known to man. Like he had to look at it enough before never being able to see it ever again. Eventually his thoughts circled back to the present day. To their banter and to Matt's unbearably cringe attempts at flirting.

He was staring at Matt the whole time. He felt himself inching closer to the other boy. Matt was still talking about something Gus had no clue what it was. And he didn't care. He gently raised his hand to turn Matt's chin towards him, which caught the other witch off guard.

Matt looked him in the eyes for what felt like minutes, when in reality it was barely a few seconds. Eventually they both leaned in.

The kiss was gentle. Something none of them expected from each other, though they didn't complain. All of the meteors up in the sky felt like they were circling around them. Like they were falling just for them. The world drifted further and further away, leaving them inside their little bubble. The moment seemed like it could last forever. They wanted it to last forever. Sadly, nothing ever does.

They parted after approximately ten seconds. For a short while none of them opened their eyes, until Matt spoke up:

-Well that's… a new way to tell me to shut up - he whispered, a joking tone behind it.

-Enjoy this while it lasts, it won't be happening again any time soon.

The walk back was full of constant bickering and banter. The two boys kept nudging, poking and pushing one another.
Eventually Gus got tired of it and rested his forehead on Matt's shoulder, still walking.

They stayed that way for a couple minutes, until Gus broke the silence, not raising his head from it's current position.

"I regret kissing you. It was gross" he said, sounding drousy.

"Fuck you" the other boy snickered and put an arm around his companion. This night was something they both would definitely remember for the rest of their lives.
