Another meaning to the word "Deku"

Summary:

Has anyone connected Izuku's nickname and Hero Name "Deku" to a certain video game character in a form of a great big tree?
And if you did why didn't anyone make an MHA reaction video or story?

Well, get ready to see what their reactions are.

Work Text:

"You'll have hell to pay later!"

Standing in the doorway, was the M-rated heroine strutting into the classroom.

Midnight "Because a lot of hero names used by students become recognized by society, and they end up becoming professional hero names!"

"Midnight!" The students, minus Katsuki and Y/N, shouted.

Aizawa then starts explaining the task.

Aizawa "So Midnight will be making sure your names are okay. I can't do stuff like that."

He then remembers how his long-time friend gave him his hero name. While Midnight starts a rundown on what hero names are about.

Midnight "When you give yourself a name, you get a more concrete image of what you want to be like in the future, and you can get closer to it. This is what it means when they say,
"Names and natures do often agree." Like "All Might," for example."

This triggers a thought in Izuku's head.

Izuku 'All Might. My hero name… A name for what I want to be like in the future, huh?

Sometime Later

Clapping her hands to get everyone's attention, Midnight spoke.

Midnight "Okay, let's start presenting names starting with those who are ready."

Everyone froze on the spot.

'We're presenting these?

'Man, that'll take some nerve…

The French student, Aoyama, walks up to the front of the class to present his hero name.

Aoyama "Here I go… "

He holds up his board that reads...

Aoyama "Shining Hero: 'I can not stop twinkling'"! Which means, you can't stop my sparkles!

Y/N whispers under his/her breath, "It's a goddamn sentence! Moron."

Midnight "It'll be easier to use if you take out the "I" and shorten the "can not" to "can't."

You're right, mademoiselle.

The whole class thought 'It's okay?'

Y/N "That's still a stupid hero name. Just go with Nova."

Aoyama "Nova?"

Y/N "Its definition means a star showing a sudden large increase in brightness and then slowly returning to its original state over a few months. It's a noun in astronomy."

Mina decided to go next to present her hero's name.

Mina "Hero name, "Alien Queen"!"

Y/N "Shh! You wanna get sued?"

Mina went back to her seat dejected. "Dang it."

With how stressful and nerve-racking it's becoming to think of a good name for yourself, all the hero students felt like they are going to be humiliated for life.

"Ribbit! Then, may I go next?"

Midnight "Go ahead, Tsu."

That is until Tsuyu went up to present her name choice.

Tsuyu "I've had this in mind ever since I was in elementary school. "Rainy Season Hero: Froppy"."

It brought a smile to all the student's faces.

"That's so cute!"

"It seems friendly. I like it!"

Midnight "It's a great example of a name that everyone will love!"

"Froppy!"

"Thanks, Froppy!

"You've brought things back to normal!"

Soon, everyone was coming up with great names; some were homages to pro heroes from the past like Kirishima's, while others were a play on words like Shoji's, and some are connected to their quirks and skills like Kaminari, Jiro, and Ojiro.

While others are stuck at what they want to be known for and there is one who just...

Katsuki "King Explosion Murder."

Doesn't get the idea that a name like that marks you as a villain/killer.

Y/N "Do want to be known as a serial killer, Pomeranian Boy?"

Katsuki "YOU WANT TO DIE, Y/N INSULT NICKNAME!?"

Y/N "You're only proving my point."

While Bakugou went back to sulking in his seat trying to think of a new name, Izuku was thinking back to his happy childhood time when he asked his mom about the hero names he made for himself.  "Mighty All Man," "Mighty Boy," "All Might, Jr." Mighty Man," "Captain All Might," and "Super All Might"! The list goes on.

Back then, those were cute and adorable names as tributes for All Might. But now Izuku needs a name that represents himself and his power.

After Uraraka shows her name to the class as "Uravity", it was Iida's turn.

But he wasn't his normal stickler to the rules class president self. After hearing that his big brother was attacked by Stain and lost the feeling in his legs, Iida only went with his first name like Shoto. But Y/N knows what Iida was going through and what he's planning to do during the intern studies.

It was then Izuku's turn to show his choice for his hero name.

Midnight "Midoriya, are you ready?"

Izuku "Yes!"

Izuku gets up from his seat and heads to the podium and shows his hero name.

Izuku "It's gotta be… this."

His classmates were concerned with his name choice.

"Midoriya?"

"Are you really okay with that?"

"You might be called that forever, you know."

But Izuku didn't back down.

Izuku "Yeah. I didn't like this name until now. But someone changed the meaning of it, and that had a huge impact on me. It made me really happy."

Uraraka smiles at Izuku's words. While Katsuki stares in shock.

Izuku "My "Deku" isn't always going to mean "useless"! My "Deku" means "You can do it!" This is my hero name!

Before Katsuki could glare any harder, Y/N raises her/his hand up.

Y/N "You know, Izuku. There's another connection to the name 'Deku'."

Everyone turns to Y/N.

Izuku "Really?"

Y/N "Yeah. There's a video game series with a character with the same name as your nickname, he's very well respected in the series. He is called "The Great Deku Tree".

Kirishima "Oh I get it! It's because Midorya's green hair is like a tree, right?"

Y/N "Shut up Idiot muscle head, I wasn't even finished!"

Kirishima "S-Sorry Ma'am!"

Y/N "As I was saying; In the game, The Great Deku Tree is a wise and invaluable ally to the hero of the game. The Deku tree is based on the Japanese folklore Kodama. Kodama's are spirits that reside in trees garnering respect and threatening a curse should their tree be cut down. In a traditional sense, their appearance is that of a normal tree, but over time, an animated movie shows them to be adorable humanoid spirits that filled the forest. In the game; the creatures known as Korok is a mixed version from both the movie and the folklore, they are intrinsically connected to the Great Deku Tree acting as his subjects."

The whole room went silent.

Who wouldn't when you heard that your nickname and hero name is connected to traditional folklore and a video game character?

Not to mention that some of the descriptions of the tree and Kodama's reflect Izuku's personality, but the cursed thing? Not so much.

"Man, that is so manly cool!"

Kirishima broke the silence, letting everyone voice their thoughts.

Mina "That's so awesome!"

Iida "That is truly Midoriya's style!"

Uraraka "Deku!"

Kaminari "Man, whoever made that name an insult must be feeling pretty stupid right now!"

Katsuki shakes with anger and frustration.

Katsuki "Damn it!"
