Work Text:
James is nervous as he paces back and forth. He’s expecting some very important correspondence today and he can’t contain his worry.
This had to work. He needed it to work. He needed Sirius to be free so that he could focus on their future together with Harry and escape the war. He couldn’t deal with possibly losing them to war, again. Which he knows isn’t fair since he wasn’t the one that suffered the last time (even if he did die), but he just – he didn’t want them to suffer anymore and this – this appeal had to work. He had to get the love of his life freed. He couldn’t let him be a fugitive because of him.
“Jay, relax,” Sirius says, coming behind him and stopping him in his tracks. “Whatever they decide – we’ll deal with it, but at least you tried.”
“They have to do it, right? They have to grant you an appeal? Give you a chance to defend yourself?” James questions, ignoring everything Sirius had just said. He couldn’t deal with this. He couldn’t deal with it if they said no.
“They should.”
“Should?”
“Well, you know how the Ministry is these days. They don’t always do the right thing.”
“I know, I know. I just – I want – I need to fix this,” James states. “I love you and I can’t stand being the reason that you’re stuck in this hellhole.”
“Wow, way to insult my home,” Sirius teases. He had dubbed it the ‘hellhole’ first and very much enjoyed saying that near that absurd portrait of his ‘mother’, so James knows he’s not being serious about the insult.
“Oh please, the second I get you freed – you’re going to run as far away from this hellhole as possible and you know it.”
Sirius grins. “Well, since it’s been dubbed the ‘hellhole’ –”
“By you.”
“By me. I feel like that’s an appropriate response.”
James laughs. “It so is.”
Before anymore could be said, the owl arrives and Sirius grabs it before he can, reading it quickly.
“Well?” James demands.
Sirius looks up, grinning. “You did it – I got an appeal. I’ll be able to defend myself and with testimony and memories, I’m as good as freed.”
“Yes!” James cheers before giving him a passionate kiss. “Let’s go celebrate!”
