Work Text:

Raine had grown up on the Knee, and to them a part of them would always remain then. When Eda suggested they save up and rent a cabin on the snowier parts of the Knee, Raine was delighted to agree. After all, it meant they could finally share a part of their earlier life with their three year old daughter, Lydian.

So they scraped together enough snails to rent it in the middle of winter. When the three had arrived on the knee they began their trek up a steep path to make it to the cabin.

Lydian was in awe at all the snow, and kept stopping to wallow in it. Despite the fact it had been a blizzard when she’d been born, the only snow she’d ever seen had been the occasional times in the human realm (though Eda and Raine often avoided it when it snowed heavily).

“Sweetie, if you keep jumping around in the snow now, you won’t get to enjoy it as much once we get to the cabin,” Raine said. Their hand was interlocked with Eda’s as they walked.

“But it’s everywhere!” Lydian exclaimed.

“Which means it’s also going to be at the cabin,” Eda said, “I promise you it’ll be there.” Lydian pouted and stopped trying to jump in the snow. Instead she sprinted ahead.

“I guess that’s more efficient,” Eda chuckled. Raine smirked and rolled their eyes.

“She’s so much like you,” They said.

“Why thank you, don’t give me ideas though, I’ll try making this a race,” She said.

“Oh really? And who would win, me or you?” Raine challenged. They looked Eda in the eyes and noticed that familiar glint whenever Eda was especially excited to do something.

“It’s on, Whispers,” Eda shot forward.

“UNFAIR!” Raine shouted, racing after her. They watched as Eda stopped beside Lydian and leaned down, whispering into her ear. The two glanced back at Raine as Eda lifted Lydian and sat her on her shoulders.

“You don’t want to lose to a three year old, do you?!” Eda shouted back.

“EDA!” They picked up their pace, racing to keep up with Eda and Lydian, however Eda proved to be faster.

Eventually after a few minutes, the cabin came into view. It wasn’t an eyesore by any means, but it was just right.

Raine decided to put forth an ever higher effort and managed to catch up to be beside Eda and Lydian at the very end. Raine and Eda stopped and caught their breath.

“AGAIN!” Lydian exclaimed.

“Lyd, we’re here!” Eda said, still taking in deep breaths, “We can go in and warm up before coming back out. Once we’re all warmed up then we can come out and play!”

“Okay!” Eda put Lydian down on the ground and the three entered the cabin. Inside was an open layout with two doors. To the left was the kitchen and dining area, and on the right was a living area with a sofa, armchair, coffee table, and fireplace.

Eda twirled her finger and summoned their things.

“Shall I place our luggage in the bedroom?” She asked. Raine smiled.

“That would be lovely, my lady,” Raine said.

They took their jacket off along with their snow boots and helped Lydian get her coat off as well. Once done, they picked their daughter up and sat her on the sofa. Raine sat beside her and looked to her.

“Are you excited to play in the snow?” Raine asked. Lydian nodded her head. Raine nodded back, “Me too!”

She snuggled up to Raine and they felt her shiver. The poor girl must’ve been freezing! They twirled their finger and the fireplace was lit. They could feel the warmth admitting near instantaneously.

Raine sighed with a smile, looking over to the window with one thought in mind.

This weekend would be unforgettable.

Raine had missed these moments from their childhood. Rolling up a giant ball of snow. They were in the process of making a body for a snowman. And just beside them, Eda was rolling up a slightly smaller snowball for the head.

Lydian was off finding twigs for the snowman to decorate him with.

Eda stopped first, sitting down in the snow and waiting for Raine to finish rolling the body.

“Take your time, Whispers,” Eda said.

“How rude of you, I’m doing hard work!” They chuckled. Eda smirked, rolled her eyes, and stood up. She walked over to Raine and began helping them roll the body the rest of the way.

“Teamwork, how about that,” The redhead said. The body was finished and Eda levitated the head onto the body.

“NINI, MAMA!” Raine and Eda whirled around at Lydian’s shouting from further down. She was racing up, holding a bundle of sticks and rocks.

“”Woah, sweetie be careful!” Raine dashed down to help Lydian carry the rocks. They took them from her and walked with her the rest of the way.

Uniting at the snowman, the three placed the parts onto it. It looked dashingly horrifying. A perfect representation of a snowman.

“Are you proud of your creation?” Eda asked their daughter.

“Yeah!” Lydian cheerfully exclaimed.

Raine got an idea.

They dipped their hand onto the ground and took a chunk of snow, rolling it into a ball in their hands.

“Hey, watch out.” Raine said before chucking the ball at Eda. Her head swung around and she stared wide eyed at them, eyes full of betrayal.

“How dare you!” She exclaimed, rolling up another ball and throwing it back at Raine. They laughed when it hit the side of them.

Lydian, in the middle of them, raced over to Raine and tried rolling up a snowball of her own. She attempted to throw it at Eda but it landed short.

Luckily, though, she responded with a fit of laughter.

The three threw snowballs around for several minutes. Raine and Eda were quickly exhausted, but Lydian still had her energy.

The couple sat on the steps of the cabin and watched her as she continued to play in the snow.

“You know, I’m glad we’re able to do this,” Eda said. She grabbed Raine’s hand, which they gladly took.

“Me too,” They said. They rubbed their thumb atop her hand, “She’s getting a great childhood.”

“Mhm,” Eda said, “I’m glad we can be here too.”

“Yeah?” They said. She nodded.

Eda leaned her head onto Raine’s shoulder.

“I love you,,” She said.

“I love you too,” They said back.

After coming in and eating dinner, Lydian had quickly fallen asleep on the sofa. That left Raine and Eda alone to sit in front of the fire.

They’d spent the good half of an hour talking about old stories from their Hexside days. Specifically of their camping trip to the knee.

“Remember when your sister raced back to the campfire after swearing she was going to bed early?” Raine chuckled. Eda let out a hearty laugh.

“Yeah! A bat was in her tent and it freaked her out since she didn’t know any beast keeping magic!” She said, “Oh the look on her face was priceless when she realized no one was ever going to let her forget about that!”

The two laughed for a while recalling memories.

“I remember you trying to hold my hand, you were horrified of how I’d react,” Eda said

“Then you ended up grabbing it because the story of the killer slitherbeast had scared you,” Raine teased. Eda’s face reddened.

“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” She said.

“Oh come on, Calamity, you’re an adult now you can admit to being a scaredy-cat,” Raine said.

“And who had stage fright?” Eda smirked at them.

“That’s unfair, it’s anxiety!” Raine exclaimed.

“I know I know,” She chuckled, “Sorry.”

They laid their head on her shoulder.

“It’s alright,” Raine said.

“Do you think you would’ve joined a coven? If you hadn’t transferred from St. Epiderm?” Eda asked. Raine was quiet for a moment, staring into the cackling fire before them.

“I… probably would have,” They admitted, “But that’s because I wouldn’t have gotten the chance to get to know such a cool witch.” They took her hand. Raine looked up to her face and saw Eda smiling.

“I love you so much,” Eda said, “I’m so happy we get to be here together. With our freaking daughter of all people!”

“Yeah,” Raine said, “Aren’t we lucky?”

“We are incredibly lucky,” Eda squeezed their hand, “Thank you. For giving me everything.”

“I should thank you, you’ve given me a life I never thought I’d have,” They said, “You’re my world, you are still the coolest witch I know.”

“I could say the same about you, Rainestorm,” Eda kissed Raine’s cheek.

The two continued to sit together in front of the fire, not saying another word. Though words were not needed, they had each other after all. And that’s all that mattered somehow.
