Work Text:
It was a nice day outside, almost cloudless, warm with a cool breeze.
Light trickled into the room as Sunny got dressed and tied his shoes, using the end of his bed to rest his foot. He set both feet on the floor and walked over to his dresser where his brand-new phone sat. It was next to his older one which had been dedicated to emergencies in case his new one died. His new phone was more portable than his previous one, which was a plus for what he had planned for today.
The park near Sunny’s house was rather large, with a few playgrounds and a blacktop nearby, but the area he liked was the big open field with a path for people to walk on. When he got there, the park was mostly empty other than some kids playing at the playgrounds and their parents watching them, perfect. He walked along the path until he came to a spot with lots of sun and a single tree on a small hill.
He checked for ants, then placed his phone on the grass and lay down beside it, waiting for it to ring. A few minutes passed, and he checked the time, any moment now.
His phone lightly vibrated on the grass next to him as it rang, and his heart fluttered a little. He always loved getting calls from Kel, especially this time.
Sunny’s face felt warm as he answered the phone and heard Kel’s cheery voice, “Sunny! Hi!” He could hear his big smile through the phone.
“Hey Kel, how’s everyone been?” Sunny spoke softly.
“We’re all doing pretty good! Basil’s been better since they started seeing that therapist. Aubrey joined a baseball team, and Hero’s nearly done with college. I think he should be back for a break in a few days as well.” Kel spoke quickly but slowly enough for Sunny to understand. Sometimes he’d get too excited and speed up, but Sunny had learned how to understand him most of the time. “I miss you Sunshine.”
Sunny melted at that. “I miss you too…but I asked how everyone was doing, that includes you, doofus,” he said in a lighthearted tone. Kel often forgot to mention himself and his own well-being. Sunny was bad at too, so they reminded each other of it when they could.
“Ah, right, right.” Kel lightly chuckled and continued, “Well, I’ve been decent. I almost won a game but lost by one basket. I’ve been looking forward to our calls every other week too.” Sunny could hear his smile grow wider as he spoke, it made Sunny smile too.
They talked back and forth for a little longer before Sunny paused and took a breath. “Kel.”
“What’s up, Sunny?” he had a curious tone as he waited for a response.
“So…My mom and I talked about it, and she said that we might be able to visit Faraway soon.” He smiled and waited for Kel to process it and answer.
Kel lit up like a firework and had to stop himself from yelling. “Really!?! Oh my goodness, Sunny, that’s great!! W-when are you coming? Where are you guys going to crash?? How long will-” Sunny cut him off before he rambled into oblivion.
“We’re still working it out, so we’ll have to figure out where to stay and for how long, but if we time it right we might get there near the same time Hero does. You said he’s coming back from college, right?”
Kel nodded even though Sunny couldn’t see, “Yeah, maybe in like a week or two from what my mom said and the texts he sent me. I-” He suddenly stopped, a grin spread on his face, Sunny could tell from the pause.
“Kel..?”
“Sunny….this means...I can finally take you on a date in Faraway.”
Sunny’s jaw dropped from the realization, and his face flushed red as he processed it. “I- Oh…oh my gosh-”
Kel laughed a little “Are you blushing?”
Sunny covered his face with his hand, “N-no…okay, maybe. Aauuoogh!!” They both laughed a little at Sunny’s bashfulness, Kel found it adorable.
“You figure it out with your mom, and when you get here we’re going on a date, the best date you’ll ever go on!” Sunny couldn’t help but smile as he sat up, moving his hand from over his face to prop himself up.
“I can’t wait doofus, but that’s a promise, you hear me?”
“Okay, a promise it is. See you then Sunshine, mwah!” Kel hung up.
Sunny felt butterflies in his stomach, a real date with Kel. They had been on calls together many times and would sometimes pretend they were on a date while calling at a restaurant or watching the same movie at their houses. But to finally be going back to Faraway to see all his friends and go on an actual date with Kel.
He couldn’t wait. He stood up and sent a quick text to Kel with a heart. Then he started walking on the path back home while clutching his phone to his chest and with a goofy smile across his face.
