Two knelt in prayer, their appearances opposite but the same look deep in their eyes. One was a man old enough to have many sons. Candlelight glowed off his sturdy leather jerkin, his green hat clutched in his hands.
The other was yet growing. Embroidery detailed every inch of the fine shot-silk coat that hung, far too loose, around him.
The boy stood. “May I light a candle for you?”
"Thank you. We... needed a loan to survive the winter. Come harvest, our crops were poisoned.”
“Come with me?”
“Why?”
“Let’s not plan a homicide in the house of God.”
