Work Text:
“Hey, what are you doing?” James asks, as he enters the drawing room of Grimmauld Place. Sirius is sitting crossed legged in front of the tapestry that he’d been burned off of when he’d been just about sixteen.
James knows how much Sirius hates being here, and wishes he could be anywhere else, but until he gets Sirius cleared, he’s stuck. Unfortunately, that means that James often finds Sirius brooding in some part of this godawful house likely thinking about his awful family, and judging by his blank stare at the tapestry, he’s brooding again.
Especially since he doesn’t appear to notice James sit beside him. “Si? What are you doing?”
“Thinking.”
“About?”
“About how they thought our lineage was so perfect it had to be preserved. That it was more important to them to continue the line in a way they deemed correct.”
“Yeah… and?”
“And our lineage ends with me.” Sirius laughs. “All that time they spent disappointed in me and the biggest disappointment was falling in love with you and not being able to continue the line – and it’s like I get to stick it in their faces. I literally ended the direct Black line. Just by falling in love with the man of my dreams.”
James laughs. “Yeah, well, we always knew that you’d be trouble for them, since the moment we met.”
“Best moment of my life – changed it forever.”
James grins. “And you’re happy about that, right? You don’t wish you had followed the rules?”
“Completely happy,” Sirius says, smiling. “Besides, we both know I couldn’t follow the rules to save my life.”
“Good because I wouldn’t want you to.”
“Good.”
