Work Text:
Sirius is nervous as he sits across from Mr. and Mrs. Potter for the first time since he’d met them. He’d never been nervous before, but he’d also never asked for their permission to marry their son.
He knows it’s a bit irrational for him to be nervous, after all, they love him, they love James, and they love him and James together, yet, he is. He’s terribly nervous that they won’t think he’s enough for their precious son or that they’ll be upset that this would end the Potter line (at least biologically unless they use a surrogate).
“Tea, darling?” Mrs. Potter asks.
“Yes, that would be lovely. Thank you, Mrs. Potter.”
“I told you to call me ‘Effie’ dear,” Mrs. Potter says, as she begins to steep the tea. “After all, you’re practically family.”
“Actually, that’s why I’m here,” Sirius states. He pulls the ring box out of his pocket. “I’d like to be officially family. I’d like your permission to ask your son to marry me – although I’ve already decided to take on the Potter name.”
Their faces split into grins. “Of course, Darling,” Mrs. Potter says.
“As if we’d ever say no,” Mr. Potter teases. “You two would just run off and elope, and we quite love you too much for that.”
Sirius smiles. “I don’t know why I was nervous.”
“I don’t know why you were either,” James says, from behind him. Evidently, he’d been spying on the whole conversation. “I told you that they’d be delighted for you to be a Potter.”
“You’re not supposed to be here,” Sirius states, but he smiles. “But I’m glad you are – I had this big plan for a fun night out, but …” he gets down on one knee. “Will you marry me?”
“Yes,” James smiles, bringing him his feet and kissing him soundly.
“Good.”
