Chapter Text
“I’m pregnant,” Kim blurted out. A heady feeling of deja vu washed over Adam. He remembered the last time he’d heard these words from Kim’s mouth, and he had to blink himself back into the present moment.
“What did you just say?” he asked, wondering if he was still in the car, sitting outside a suspect’s apartment with Kim four years ago.
“Adam,” she said, stepping between his knees where he sat on the chair by the kitchen island. “I’m pregnant.” Her hands framed his face. “I’m pregnant,” she repeated, looking at him.
“You-you’re pregnant,” he repeated dumbly. He blinked again, staring at her. She nodded her head, a sweet smile on her face.
The next few seconds happened suddenly. One second Kim was standing and in the next, Adam had jumped up, picked her up and set her down on the island.
“You’re pregnant. With our kid. With our kid,” he said, his hands going to her belly, running his hands over it.
“Um well… I mean I can say it again a few times, but I’ll still be pregnant,” she said. He pressed a hard kiss to her lips before bending lower, at eye-level with her tummy.
“Hey, little one,” he whispered, and Kim’s eyes instantly flooded. She brought her hands to his head, stroking his hair as he whispered and cooed to their baby.
“We’re so happy you’re in there,” he murmured. He pressed a kiss there, and then stood back up, his eyes shining.
He touched his forehead to hers, taking a moment. Kim understood, knowing this moment was something they didn’t know they’d ever have. She stayed with him, soaking it all up.
“When did you find out?” he asked.
“I found out for sure this morning. I had to go to the doctor to confirm. I was terrified it was a false positive and didn’t want to raise our hopes before I was 100% certain. I took a few tests at home last night,” she said.
“Oh. I didn’t see any in the trash,” he said, frowning.
“Well…that’s because I have them with me. Here,” she replied, handing him a small box, all wrapped up with a bow, which he opened to find about five or six home pregnancy tests. All of them were positioned so he could clearly make out that they said ‘pregnant’.
“You kept them?”
“I wanted to show you before we trashed them… it didn’t feel right without you. If you hadn’t been at work, you would’ve been able to see them last night itself, but I’m glad we’re a hundred percent sure,” she explained. “I want to do this all right this time, Adam. We were so taken aback by everything the last time…but things are different now. We’re ready for this, and I want to be very clear about everything,” she said with a serious look on her face.
“What’s going on in that beautiful head of yours?” he asked.
“Just wanna make it clear that I’m all in, Adam. We aren’t doing this pregnancy halfway this time. You’re the father, and you–why are you smiling?” she asked.
“Oh, nothing. Sorry, I didn’t mean to interrupt you. Please, go on,” he said, covering his smile with his palm.
“Adam Ruzek. Are you making fun of me?” she asked in mock outrage.
“Never, baby. I would never, ever make fun of you. You’re the mother of my children. In fact, I worship the ground you walk on. Should we start some kind of ritual where I actually could worship you?” Kim burst out laughing.
“You’re such an idiot. Oh my god,” she said, still laughing. He was smiling, but sobered up pretty quickly.
“Kim, I love everything you said, and I appreciate it more than you know. And just so it’s clear, I’ve always been all in with you. I don’t know how not to be,” he confessed. Kim softened, her heart melting. Not knowing how to respond to that, she leaned forward to kiss him.

The next day, Adam hurried along to catch up with Kev in the station’s parking lot, jogging a little until he caught up with him, both of them entering the precinct.
“Kev, hey bro. Hold up,” he said. Kev turned, nodding at Adam.
“Hey, man. What’s good?”
“Just checking to see if we’re all on for dinner on Friday,” asked Adam.
“Hell yeah, we’re on for dinner. I promised the lil queen that marshmallow dessert that Jordan told her about, she’s been looking forward to it ever since,” Kev replied. Adam laughed, shaking his head at the fact that his little girl had three grown men wrapped around her little finger.
“Sounds good, man. Mak is very excited to see you and Jordan too,” he said. “How’s Jordan doing?”
“He’s alright, on the straight and narrow. He and my dad are getting to know each other, it’s going slow, but good,” Kev replied.
“That’s good to hear, man. I’ll see you upstairs?” he said, getting a nod in return before running up to clock in.
It was a slow day at work, most of them finishing up paperwork from previous cases. Adam was just finishing up one of the files when Kim came in, having dropped Mak off at school. She said hi to everyone, shot him a smile at him and then headed to the break room. He frowned, got up and followed her in, only to find her going for the coffee.
“Hey, darlin’. What are you doing?” he asked. She looked back at him, confused.
“... Getting a coffee? What does it look like I’m doing?”
“Should you be having that? Now that you’re… you know,” he said, glancing at her stomach pointedly, before looking back toward the bullpen to make sure they weren’t overheard. They were going to hold off on telling the others for a while, with the exception of Kevin, who they were going to tell at family dinner on Friday.
Kim wanted to laugh, but she held it in as she examined his face. Adam was worried.
“Babe, I can have one to two cups per day…I got the okay from the doctor yesterday. Plus, I’m doing like half the amount I’d usually do, so this is technically half a cup,” she said. He still looked worried. She sighed, noting how it had been only one day since he’d found out about the baby and he was already so protective. While her heart jumped at the thought, she couldn’t help but think about how much worse he was going to get in the next several months.
“Adam, I promise it’s fine, you gotta stop worrying so much. I’m not gonna give the baby anything it’s not supposed to have, okay? Trust me,” she said. He exhaled deeply.
“Okay. Sorry, you’re right. I do trust you, I just got really scared for a minute there,” he said.
“I know you did, and it’s fine. But we’ve got, like, nine months ahead of us…if coffee is going to freak you out like this, then…”
“Are you saying I’m overreacting?”
“Uh, duh. That’s exactly what I’m saying,” she teased.
“You haven’t even seen what me overreacting is gonna look like, Kim. Just you wait.” She rolled her eyes while laughing, knowing just how many overreactions were going to come her way by her overprotective guy.
