Chapter Text

Rosie woke up early Wednesday morning, usually when Rosie woke up early it was because she had something she was looking forward to; a sleepover at her best friend Reese's house or a trip into Camden but not today. Today Rosie woke up to a splitting pain in her head, she tried to get up to grab some paracetamol but as soon as she tried to move the room started spinning and she felt cold and clammy at the same time. There definitely wouldn't be any sleepovers for Rosie today.

"Dad" Rosie called squeezing her eyes tightly shut to try and block out some of the pain caused by shouting for her Dad's. John's footsteps pounded up the stairs quickly as he rushed into his daughters room.
"Rosie what's wrong?" Asked John
"My head" whimpered Rosie. John quickly switched to what Rosie affectionately referred to as his doctor more.
"Is the pain sharp or dull" he asked.
"Dull" replied Rosie.
"Where abouts does it hurt"
"Above my eyes"

John pressed his hand to his daughters forehead "Rosie your burning up" he exclaimed.
"I feel freezing" Rosie said with a shudder.
"Let's get you comfortable downstairs on the couch" John said. He put an arm under Rosie's shoulder and lifted up her shivering form then he grabbed her favourite fluffy dressing gown and helped her put it on. She was already far too hot and the last thing she needed was anything else to warm her up but John couldn't bear to see her shivering. He carefully helped his daughter down the stairs making sure she didn't trip and took her to the couch which Rosie gratefully flopped down onto before rushing off to his and Sherlock's room to get his medical bag. Sherlock woke up when John dragged his medical bag out of under the bed.

"John come back to bed it's cold without you" whined Sherlock.
"I can't Rosie's sick" John replied.
"What! What's wrong with her" Sherlock asked alarmed
"Headache and a fever, she's on the couch shivering" John said.
"I'll be right there" Sherlock promised leaping out of bed and throwing on a mismatched pair of trousers and a blazer.

John was in the living room checking Rosie's temperature when Sherlock bustled in.
"Morning love" called John.
"Watson sweetie what's wrong? Can I get you anything" Sherlock immediately bounded over to his adopted daughters side.
"My head" shuddered Rosie.
"Have you given her pain killers yet" Sherlock asked anxiously hopping from one foot to the other.
"I will in a moment could you get breakfast started please dear?" Asked John.
"Of course" he said before turning to Rosie "Watson sweetie would you like a bacon sandwich or an omelette " asked Sherlock
"I'm not hungry" Rosie replied.
"You have to eat something" John said firmly.
"I'll make you a bacon sandwich just the way you like it" offered Sherlock.
"With tomato sauce?" asked Rosie
"Of course" Sherlock promised.

Sherlock bounded off to the kitchen to make his darling Rosie breakfast.

"Ok Rosie I'll call the school in a bit and tell them your staying home today in the meantime why don't you choose a movie to watch" John said gently
Rosie nodded meekly and John went to join Sherlock in the kitchen.

"I've given Rosie some pain killers she can have more in 6 hours if she needs them." Explained John.
"Ok" said Sherlock making a note of this in his mind palace.
"Can you stay home and watch her today? The clinic is severely understaffed right now so I can't stay home" John asked
"Of course I'll keep an eye on her" Sherlock said.
"Great. I have to go, call me if you need anything " John said before heading down stairs and out of 221B.

10 minutes later Sherlock had finished preparing Rosie's breakfast he brought it over to his daughter, setting it down on the table in front of her.
"I have to head out for a bit Watson I'll only be gone 5 minutes call me if you need anything, anything at all" Sherlock said.
"Ok, I'll be fine" Rosie assured her dad.
"See you soon " Sherlock said kissing Rosie forehead and practically sprinting to the local store.

He couldn't believe he and John hadn't stocked up their medical cabinet sooner, Sherlock wasn't sure what he should get for Rosie he usually ignored any illness he had as he could become almost completely detached from his body's needs when he was focused on a case so he ended up buying rather a lot. Better to have too much than not enough, he figured. Sherlock had bought a variety of painkillers in gel, tablet and liquid form, cool n soothe, 4 head headache treatment, Vicks vaporub, several different types of tissue, cough medicine, strepsils, tomato soup, herbal teas he had heard help with sickness and all of Rosie's favourite snacks. Then he jogged back to 221b and leapt up the stairs two at a time.

"Sherlock dear your taking care of a sick child not opening a pharmacy" said Mrs Hudson.
"Rosie seems really sick I want to make sure she has everything she needs" explain Sherlock, his voice tinged with worry.
Mrs Hudson always marvelled at how much Sherlock cared about his daughter he loved her, she'd expected that, but Sherlock cared about Rosie more than she'd ever seen anyone care for another person before in her life.

When Sherlock got into 221B he saw that Rosie was already looking a little better. She was sat up and looked much less ashen than she had before he left this morning.

"Hey Rosie" Sherlock said gently "how are you feeling"
"Better" Rosie replied but her voice still shook.
"Ok, well you just rest I have some stuff for your head" Sherlock reassured her.
Rosie saw the bags Sherlock had and laughed.
"Dad did you buy an entire grocery store while you were out?"
"Just the medicine section" he joked.

Sherlock went to go and stock up the medicine cabinet while Rosie watched some more movies. By lunchtime Rosie seemed to be getting worse again Sherlock gave Rosie some soup and more painkillers then left her to rest. He thought about calling John but he didn't want him to worry, later Mrs Hudson came upstairs with some tea that she assured Rosie was like a magical cure for everything and instructed her to drink it all. Mrs Hudson's magic tea must have worked because by the time John got home Rosie felt much better and was reading through a chemistry textbook preparing for a test she had next week.

"I'm glad to see your feeling better" said John.
That evening the Watson-Holmes family gathered around the television to watch crap reality TV and talk about there days and everything felt right in the world.
