A shrill beep tore through the room, and suddenly one of his hands was wrenched from the bedrail.
"One hour is up. The sensor has been activated." A muffled voice crackled through the loudspeaker, but he could barely register it. His ears rang; the beeping reverberated, growing sharper and more insistent the longer he tried to block it out.
"As soon as his heart stops beating, the body will be terminated."
"Let go of the bed, boy."
"No."
"Let him go."
"The sedative. We can’t lose both boys at once. Hurry, Yagi!"
"NO!"
The needle in his arm had missed its mark, scraping painfully against bone. Every nerve screamed, but it didn’t compare to the sensation that seized him: as if his own heart were being torn from his chest while he was still alive. His fingers slipped from the bed frame, and warm hands closed around him, anchoring him to something real. But no embrace could ever feel as familiar as the body of the one person he had been powerless to save.Series
