The song of birds slipped through the open window filling the quiet room with a lovely melody. Morning sunlight had just begun to shine, slowly illuminating the room that had messy clothes scattered around a futon.
The young white-haired samurai stirred with the song of the birds. His sensitivity to nature always made him wake up at the break of dawn. While most would be irritated at waking up so early, he instead cherished the peacefulness of that moment. He sighed in bliss.
The cold of the night had yet to melt away. And as nice as the quiet morning was, he still desired to snuggle down on the futon and return to the land of dreams. He turned around and tugged the covers closer to him.
It was then when he noticed someone laying beside him. Tomo was fast asleep. The covers were partially pulled off of him revealing the taller man’s bare chest.
Memories of the passionate night spent together flashed through Kazuha’s mind. Whispers of sweet nothings shared in the heat of the moment. Kisses of promises shared between them. And an act of love that expressed their hearts' deepest desires.
He blushed, he would never have thought that the day before would have ended as it did. What had started as simple jokes turned into teasing smiles. Which then turned into flirty touches and then somehow became a kiss. A kiss that revealed how they truly felt for one another.
He looked closer at Tomo and felt his heart melt. After so much time traveling together, he was glad to reach a new and exciting point in their journey. He pulled the covers over both of them and nestled closer to his sleeping lover. He rested his head on his shoulder and sighed as he closed his eyes. Feeling Tomo’s skin against his comforted him and reassured him that the memories of the night before were real and not some made up dream.
It was then Tomo’s turn to begin to stir awake. Tomo turned to face him and wrapped his arms around him to pull him closer to his chest. “Morning.” His voice was groggy from having just woken up.
Kazuha pulled away enough to stare up at Tomo’s face. Tomo had a tired smile and his eyes were barely open. Kazuha couldn’t help but want to kiss him again. He reached his hand towards Tomo’s face and gently pulled him closer. The taller man let himself be guided towards Kazuha’s soft lips.
Kazuha relaxed as he felt Tomo’s lips brush against his. He felt Tomo’s arms pull him closer, pressing their bodies together, but he didn’t lean in to finish the kiss. Kazuha waited but nothing happened. Instead he felt Tomo smile and how he slowly began to shake with laughter. Kazuha huffed in exasperation and leaned in himself, cutting off the laugh that had begun to form on Tomo’s lips. He was too tired to play those silly teasing games.
The kiss was slow and soft. Before their tryst that night, Kazuha never imagined Tomo could be so gentle. A welcoming warmth spread through his face and chest. Kazuha could feel the love that Tomo poured into the kiss. Oh, how he wished that that moment would never end. Tomo held the back of his neck and deepened the kiss once before finally pulling away.
They lay there catching their breath. “Please wake me up like this every day.” Tomo chuckled.
Kazuha sighed blissfully. “Only if you promise to hold me like this.”
Tomo adjusted himself and nestled his head on top of Kazuha’s head. “I can do that.” He closed his eyes and tried to go back to sleep.
They lay together in peaceful silence. As the minutes passed more light slowly began to creep into the room. And as the sun rose, more sounds slowly started to be heard as people awoke and began to start their day.
The sounds of chairs scraping against the wooden floor of the inn they stayed in were too loud for Kazuha’s liking. And as more and more patrons awoke and made their way to the first floor, the louder the noises got.
Kazuha groaned in annoyance. He wished the silence could have lasted longer. As nice as it was having a roof over their heads, he had grown to prefer camping out in nature where no loud noises could disturb him.
He carefully began to pull away from Tomo so as to not wake him but was surprised when Tomo himself unwrapped his arms from around him. “I thought you had gone to sleep again,” Kazuha said, as he laid his head next to Tomo’s.
“Couldn’t sleep. I was too distracted thinking about the angel in my arms.” He sheepishly smiled.
Kazuha blushed and chuckled. “Should I sleep in a different room so as to not disturb your beauty sleep then?” He teased back.
Tomo reached out and brushed some hair behind Kazuha’s ear. “You wouldn’t be so cruel as to deny me this sight each morning would you?”
Kazuha pretended to think about it. “Perhaps.” At the sight of Tomo pouting Kazuha couldn’t help but burst out laughing. “Relax, I wouldn’t want to miss out on moments like this either.”
Kazuha then laid on his back. As much as he wanted to stay in Tomo’s arms, he knew that they still needed to get up and start their day. He stretched his back but quickly winced in pain.
Tomo sat up and took a closer look at him. “Are you ok?”
Kazuha carefully sat up. “I’m fine… just a bit sore from last night.” He looked back at Tomo and saw the smirk that had formed on his face. “Oh shut up!” He playfully tossed his pillow at Tomo.
Tomo got smacked right in his face with the pillow. “Hey! I haven’t even said anything yet.” He laughed. Once his laughter died down, he sat closer to Kazuha and placed his hand over his. “Was I too rough last night? It was our first time so I might have gotten a little carried away.”
“There’s no need for you to worry. I honestly quite enjoyed it.” He reassured him and rested his head on Tomo’s shoulder. “I’m actually looking forward to next time.”
Tomo smirked and leaned closer. He then whispered in his ears. “We can make the next time right now if you wish.” His free hand trailed to Kazuha’s waist and gently pulled him closer.
Kazuha looked up and placed a chaste kiss on Tomo’s jaw. “Unfortunately we have plans for today. And I would very much prefer not being so sore that I am unable to walk.”
Tomo pouted again and Kazuha laughed at his expression once more. “There’s no need to pout. We can continue this tonight if you wish.”
Tomo sighed in defeat. He placed a quick peck on Kazuha’s forehead. “I’m going to hold you to that offer.”
Kazuha smiled. “I’m looking forward to it.” He then got off the futon and began to pick up the clothes scattered around. Tomo followed soon after and even handed him a fresh batch of clothes from their bags.
They did their morning routine just like they’d done plenty of times before. However this time their routine included fleeting kisses shared between them.
That morning was the start of a new page in their life together. One that they both looked forward to walking together. When they opened the door to leave, they shared one final kiss before finally starting that journey together.
