Work Text:
Eddie sighs as the piles of mail filling his desk start filling his mind as well. He was truly an idiot for believing he could sort all the mail,by morning all, on his own. He told everyone he could, that he was a strong guy who could do anything mail related. Guess that was just a big lie. It seemed like there was no light at the end of the tunnel that he dug for himself, until his door creaked open.
"Good afternoon eddie. I do apologize for disturbing you at this time of day, but I feel the need to ask if you can actually sort all of it by yourself." Frank Frankly. As he's known. Stands at the opening of the door with the feeling of worry written all over his usually grumpy face. Eddie ofcourse denies by saying "No need to worry frank! I'll definitely be able to finish these by morning, there's nothing I as a mailman can't do!". Despite Eddie's show of confidence and reassurance, Frank doesn't succumb to it and still worries for the friend.
As Frank moves himself behind the disgruntled mailman. He can't help but look over and analyze the mail piles, but over the piles of colorful letters, he finds himself pulled to a letter shaped like a heart with his name on it. "Eddie" he calls "who's this from?".
Eddie looks at Frank and then to the letter in his hand. When he noticed the letter he quickly took it out of Frank's hand and threw it on the table along with the other piles of mail before answering "oh umm Nobody! I mean.. I don't know, I forgot!". He answered while panicking. Of Course he'd know who sent the letter, he's the one who's tasked to mail them after all! But in this instance where he was the one who wrote the letter, It seems easier to lie and say that he doesn't.
"I bet the guy who wrote this is a total weirdo! No-not for liking you of course! I mean, I think it's actually impossible to not Like you- but not in that way!" Eddie's panicked answer earns him a quiet chuckle by Frank.
"Eddie, don't worry it's just a question." Frank reassures him as he grabs a chair to situate himself before helping with the mail sorting. "So tell me, where do all these go?"
After Eddie calmed himself down and explained how the mail should be sorted, They both started sorting all the mail into its own separate piles. The ones for Wally go in the blue box, the ones for poppy in the green, and the commercial ones in the bin. It's quite the easy task if it weren't for the fact the said mail was in abundance. Frank saw himself go from reading the letters one by one and hovering over the multiple boxes, to leaving it all to muscle memory and intuition, he might just have to become a mailman as well if it was always this easy.
As they continued their mail sorting, they saw themselves getting into comfortable conversations that kept the atmosphere from feeling awkward. They talked about their interests like Frank's that include butterflies and weird kinds of hello cakes, and about hometowns as well, though it turned into Eddie throwing out random town names that he has never been to, even places that don't exist. It was cozy, nice, and comforting, just a comfortable atmosphere to be in the night awaiting the end of their seemingly endless mail sorting and the rise of the sun.
It was like that. Until the same pesky letter from earlier shows up again right in front of Frank, and this time Frank succumbs to his curiosity and grabs the letter quietly so as to not alert the mailman beside him. As the heart shaped letter is turned over to reveal its text filled side, Frank starts Reading
Dear Frank Frankly
I hope this letter is not perceived as a joke or a prank for some kind. I write this letter with the same love and passion I have for you.
I truly believe there's no single person I've met that is like you, and I believe there won't ever be one. One who makes me feel the same way towards you. One who can speak, act, and walk the same as you do. I believe there's nobody like that but you. Everything about you makes me feel happy and calm, I feel at ease whenever I know you're happy, I feel happy knowing that in my life I get to have you in it. I cannot be thankful enough to any greater being, if there is one, for putting me as close to you as I am now. I am a simple man who you probably don't like, and because I am that simple man I have simple thoughts and opinions that certainly wouldn't pique your interest. but as a simple man I only have one simple wish. And that is to be with you.
~Eddie dear
To say that Frank was flustered would be an understatement. He is absolutely filled with emotion. He doesn't know what to think, but he definitely knows how he feels. And he feels the same way for Eddie.
"Eddie." Frank calls, getting a "hmm" in response. "Do you think you'll ever meet someone like me again?"
Eddie was pushed back a little by Frank's question. For some reason it sounds familiar to him, but he'll answer it anyway. This is his crush who is asking. "Well no, you're really unique and everything you do is so different from others. It's almost mesmerizing really-ah sorry!" He cut himself off when he realized what he was saying. Frank only looks at him smiling, before asking another question.
"Are you thankful that I'm here with you? In the same place at the same time?" This question like the other one also felt familiar, almost like he's heard it before. But he can't quite put his finger on it. "Well of course! I wouldn't have met a great friend like you if it wasn't!" Great friends. Yes of course, they're Great friends.
Eddie looks at Frank's face, awaiting another question in Patience. He still wonders though, why were the questions so familiar? It's as if he's said the same things before, maybe he read something that had a similar tone, maybe while reading a book? And finally it dawns on him.
Right. How could he forget? Those were the exact words he put in his love letter to frank. But before he can respond, frank cuts him off.
"You're a simple man Eddie, one with simple thoughts and opinions. But that doesn't mean that you don't pique my interest. And your simple wish will not stay a wish any longer."
Eddie and Frank look at eachother, the atmosphere quickly changing as they slowly start to understand each other. Their feelings for one another, the care they feel, and the wish they both share.
"Eddie."
"Yes Frank?"
"Will you let me fulfill your wish of being with me?"
"Of course."
