i’m so in love that i might stop breathing

Summary:

Liam finally confesses his love.

Notes:

this 1k thing was inspired by one incorrect quote @miluxdw sent on my ask:

Liam: I will die for you.
Theo: I will die for you too.

also a little bit on paris by taylor swift; hence the title :)

i'm not sure if this is good, i'm self-doubting myself a lot lately. but it's just a short little thing with thiam high in the middle of nowhere (yep, u read it right).

if u, Milu, or any other people read this, i hope u guys like it 💕🫣

Work Text:

Liam was very stoned.

And not just because he felt light as a feather, like he was floating under the clouds and that was a feeling that made him laugh; but because he couldn’t stop looking at Theo.

He must be delusional, right? Like, it was the only reason Liam couldn’t stop thinking this was a date. Was it? Theo hadn’t said anything. But why would he? They hadn’t anything special. Nothing but friendship. Theo would never ask him out on a date. Also, because the two were always together in Theo’s apartment. When he didn’t take Liam there after his lacrosse practices and brought Liam home late at night, Theo always found his way into Liam’s room through the window he left open every night. They talked and read the constellations glowing on Liam’s bedroom ceiling, glowing from the galaxy lamp that helped him sleep (oddly enough, better with Theo’s presence). Liam always fell asleep in Theo’s arms, his head resting on the boy’s chest like his pillow; the steady heartbeat playing like Liam’s personal lullaby. Guiding him to comfort and peace. It was as if Liam was Rapunzel and Theo was a Prince Charming. Always there to save him. Only, unlike a happy ending, Liam woke up alone the next morning.

Yeah, he was really high.

And maybe —just maybe— he had feelings for Theo.

That should explain why he felt like he was in a trance, falling more in love with the way the icy breeze danced around Theo’s disheveled hair, curling across his forehead and behind one ear; the cheeks flushed by the chill of that autumn night, and the magical eyes that looked like a brilliant mix between blue and green. Not even the night-blue immensity of the backdrop dotted with stars dotting the sky and surrounding the moon like a protective shield seemed about as interesting as watching Theo.

He was sitting next to Liam in the bed of his truck, smelling like fennel soap and fabric softener and happiness. Maybe because he was high too (it had been Theo’s idea, after all). Liam knew that Theo didn’t seem so good-natured normally, he could catch glimpses here and there when the two of them were together; but not like that night.

Now, however, Theo was beaming. Like the sun at its peak on a summer day.

He was wearing Liam’s lacrosse hoodie, which he had worn the day before; black, worn jeans with rips and seams that told of his age (Liam wondered if Theo wasn’t feeling cold) and his only pair of scuffed boots swayed in the air as he smoked his joint for the last time; making smoke rings with the same animation as a child blowing soap bubbles.

And Theo was so handsome, Liam thought, a passionate sigh escaping next.

“I love you,” he blurted out suddenly, without realizing it.

Theo’s body stiffened and the joint fell between his fingers. Before it could hurt him, Liam took advantage of his supernatural abilities to catch the butt in time to burn the exposed part of Theo’s skin; and threw it toward the forest.

“Sorry,” Liam added, feeling his face heat up. But he didn’t dare look away from Theo, who, unlike him, had wide, shining eyes. He looked like a scared cat. It was cute.

Liam smiled softly at him.

“I guess you didn’t know, did you? I thought it was obvious. You know… supernatural stuff and all.”

“You’re not… kidding?” Theo asked, confused.

Liam chuckled lightly, frowning.

“Why would I joke about that?”

Theo stuttered.

Liam watched him open and close his mouth, the gleam in his blue-green eyes looking more and more like tears. His lips curved down and worry enveloped him like a suffocating blanket. Liam slipped his hand over Theo’s in his lap, feeling brave; and took it to his heart, no longer trapped in the cage of its calm and steady rhythm as usual, but beating loud and frantic like the wings of a little bird that had just been released. Happy.

“Are you feeling it?” Liam pressed his hand against Theo’s, trembling in his chest. “This is because of you, Theo. You make my heart come alive.”

A tear slowly slid down Theo’s cheek.

That was all it took for Liam to pull Theo onto his chest —and amazingly, the boy fit his body like he was meant to be there; as if the place had belonged to Theo this whole time.

“I’m sorry,” Theo murmured, his voice muffled in the middle of a sob.

Liam wrapped him tightly around him, squeezing him close as if Theo were his lifeline (which he was if Liam thought about it).

“You don’t have to say it back, Theo,” Liam comforted him. “It’s okay.”

Theo hugged him back, holding Liam the same way; as if his life could escape from him in the blink of an eye. Theo kept one hand over Liam’s heart, counting its beats under his breath as he held onto Liam’s jacket.

That was something Theo liked to do but Liam never understood exactly why. Maybe it was some distraction or something Theo preferred to keep to himself. Liam didn’t really care. As long as Theo was okay… the rest of the world could be forgotten.

“I’m never getting high with you again, you killjoy,” Theo growled, nuzzling his face into the crook of Liam’s neck, pressing his nose there.

Liam tried his best not to wince, but Theo could see it, and Liam felt the other boy smile against his skin.

“This is entirely your fault,” Liam defended himself. “But I liked it. It made me realize a few things”.

“That you love me?” Theo pulled away from Liam’s neck but kept his head lying on his shoulder.

“That I would really die for you”.

The speed with which Theo pulled away from Liam’s body was impressive.

“If you’re thinking of another ridiculous idea, I swear to…”

Liam’s laugh cut through Theo’s possible threat, echoing down the empty road.

“Yeah, I definitely would.”
