There’s a knock at the door and Steve has both hands occupied at the counter. “Can you get that?”
“I’m trapped,” shouts Robin.
Steve groans and stares down at the meatball mixture he’s half-finished. “I have raw meat hands. Does your entrapment trump raw meat hands.”
There’s a pause.
“Yes?”
Steve sighs and washes his hands. “It better be good, Buckley. Can you text Eddie to stop banging on the door and that I’m coming?”
Robin laughs. “Steve, you cannot say ‘Eddie,’ ‘banging,’ and ‘coming” in the same sentence and expect me to take it seriously. Like, that has to be on purpose.”
“I swear it isn’t.” Steve leaves the kitchen and walks up behind the couch. On Robin’s legs, Stripes and Britomart snuggle, paws overlapping. “Okay, so maybe this was better than raw meat hands. Jesus Christ, do they have us whipped.”
Robin scritches Stripes’ ears and he yawns. “I told you. There is very important business taking place.”
Steve drops a nuzzle on Britomart’s belly before opening the door. Eddie leans in the doorframe. “Hey Eds.”
“Hey, sweetheart.” He pecks Steve’s lips. “I hear the esteem Lady Buckley is ensnared?”
“More like being sat on by twenty pounds of cat,” says Steve.
“Wait, don’t shut the door!” Nancy speed walks the driveway and slips in under Steve’s arm. “Remind me to never sign up for early morning workouts. My thighs are killing me.”
Eddie glances down at Nancy. “You make it so easy to tease, Wheeler.”
Nancy drops her bags to the floor. “And yet I hear nothing?” She collapses onto the couch and snuggles over Robin. “Hi.”
Robin smiles and runs a hand through Robin’s hair. “Hi.”
“Are we that bad?” asks Eddie.
Robin and Nancy turn towards him. “Yes!”
Eddie scoops Stripes off Robin’s legs and cradles him. “And how’s my little gremlin?”
“He got caught in the blinds again,” says Steve. He kisses Eddie and Stripes and reenters the kitchen.
Eddie dramatically lifts Stripes. “A true warrior. Nay, the bravest in the line.”
“You guys are dorks,” says Robin from her Nancy and Britomart pile.
“Yeah, but we’re your dorks.”
Steve shapes meatballs and lets his best friend and ex-girlfriend tease his boyfriend, and wow is his life different than he thought it would be.
