The Other Father

Summary:

Scout had always been a careless fool, rarely thinking about his well-being. His adventures often led him into coming back to base injured.

Thankfully, he had someone to look out for him.

Work Text:

Spy had never considered himself a particularly ethical person. Sure, he was a gentleman and Savoir-vivre was not alien to him, however the general consensus is that professional murderer's are not exactly the highest part of society.

To say that concept's like religion were completely moronic to him would be an understatement. I mean, who believes in a magic man in the sky watching over humanity? The idea Itself seems so far-fetched that Spy couldn't help but laugh. And yet, seldom he found himself praying. One would immediately think that he was some sort of hypocrite no? Well, not exactly.

Whenever Spy would drop to his knees, It would never be for his own sake in any way, shape or form. No, in those rare instances of desperation, holy words were uttered by his mouth for a very special boy. A knucklehead who could not keep himself out of harms way no matter how hard he tried (not that he was actively making effort to do that). This troublemaker was, in fact, an adult man. However, everything about him always screamed "kid".

The youngest of 8 siblings, raised by a single mother. One cannot blame him for being an attention seeker after growing up in an environment like that. A baseball enthusiast, Tom jones's self-proclaimed biggest fan and probably the fastest runner on earth. No matter how annoying, Spy couldn't help but care for him. But why? Why care for an uneducated, filthy kid from Brooklyn-?

He was his son.

Now, first thing that probably comes to mind is how exactly is the child of the most perfect man alive such a slob? Although Spy loathes to admit, that part is probably his fault. You see, living as a professional killer is not as easy as It seems. People will do anything (and that means anything) to try and end your life. That life was the one Spy was dealt with.

This hunting spree, however, didn't end with him. Falling in love was considered the worst thing that a spy can do, which is exactly why Spy promised himself to never do that. Except things never work out that way; especially not when you meet the most beautiful woman in the world during a mission in Brooklyn. The result of that burning passion was a tiny baby named Jeremy.

Spy loved his family, how could he not? They were perfect. During those 3 quiet years in America, Spy thought he could run away from his fate. He couldn't have been more wrong.

There were eyes everywhere and one pair of them just so happened to catch a glimpse of Spy and his son on a walk. If It weren't for his quick reflexes, Jeremy would have died. That day, Spy had cried for the first time in many years, packed his things and left.

It was just his luck to find himself (20 years later mind you) hired by the same employer as his son. When he first saw him, he thought his legs would buckle under him. Terrified, he called his beloved's number and asked for an explanation. Apparently his son wasn't the best student (that's fine, he could accept It). He was, however, the best runner and shot that has been seen in a long time. Wanting to help his mother as much as he could, he picked the highest paying job that would hire him. It just so happened that It was the same one that his father had chosen (good to know they had similar tastes). Spy promised both himself and his darling that he would keep an eye on him, just to make sure he would come home in one piece.

This brings Spy back to the current situation. After working together for about 2 years and doing his best to keep his identity a secret, all the while protecting and getting to know his son, he found himself in a familiar situation. Spy did mention his boy had a knack for getting himself into trouble right? Well, today was one of those days. Scout had just come back from one of his adventures in Teufort. While that in and of itself is not an unusual thing, the common room seemed very lively for a mundane situation. Once Spy made his way downstairs, he realized why.

The boy had come back tattered and bruised, seems he got caught up in a fight. His father could only sigh, of course this happens on ceasefire day. Wanting to find out what exactly had happened, he joined the others.

"Honestly, what were you thinking?" scolded Engineer, disapproval evident on his face. "Tiny man caused trouble, got himself hurt." Heavy said, turning to Spy to inform him. Ah, so this confirms his suspicions. While It wasn't anything new to the team, he still dragged his hand over his face and groaned. Scout could be so tiring sometimes. Before the youngest had a chance to defend himself, Sniper opened his mouth. "Listen mate, if you wanna impress the Sheila, do It so that none of us are caught in the consequences." Scout only blushed, looking down with an apologetic look on his face.

Medic decided to chip on the conversation. "Vell, let's not be like zhis! I'm sure the poor Junge has already learned his lesson." Spy widened his eyes, that was not what he was expecting to come out of Medic's mouth; Apparently he wasn't the only one, the others also seemed quite surprised. Medic simply bid goodbye to everyone, taking Scout with him (probably to tend to his wounds) and left the the room.

One by one, all of Spy's co-workers left the room. He made no room to leave however. Why would Medic, of all people, defend his son. It just didn't make sense to him, had they gotten close when he wasn't looking?

But he observed Scout everyday, there was no way he couldn't have noticed-! Right?

Doubting himself was not something Spy did often, this time he could not help it though. Turning his watch, he decided to check the infirmary. Climbing the stairs as quietly as he could, he turned the corner to look through the doors of the ward. Overhearing the conversation between them, he got more peeved the longer he listened.

"Mein Gott, you certainly know how to get yourself roughed up!" Medic noted as he giggled to himself. Scout looked a bit embarrassed, perhaps he was feeling guilty about making his senior work during his only day off. "Aw man, I'm sorry Doc'. I really didn't mean for it to turn out this way, I promise!" Medic only shook his head, he did not seem particularly angry.

If anyone stumbled upon this scene, they would think that Scout was someone dear to the Medic. The boy was sitting on the operating table (probably the only thing sterile in that room apart from the surgeon's tools), while his co-worker fussed over him. The older was oddly careful with his patient, something that was very out of character for him.

Archimedes was perched on the younger's shoulder, cooing softly. It looked like the dove was trying to comfort him. Walking over to Scout's other side to finish treating his wounds, the Doctor winced. "If I didn't know any better, I'd say you vere doing zhis on purpose." The sentence was probably meant to be a joke, something to lighten the mood. Instead, It seems to have made It even worse.

Tears welled up in Scout's eyes and Spy almost ran over to his side. He had to physically stop himself from moving his legs and strangling his teammate. That would be extremely stupid of course but one cannot help paternal instincts from acting up (no matter how deeply buried they were). Medic, however, looked very remorseful. Despite being extremely awkward, he did his best to cheer Scout back up.

Nothing seemed to work, the boy burst into tears. He gripped the Doctor's forearms tightly, burying his face into his neck. "Oh Schatz... Please, do not cry." Medic reached over with his calloused hands, wiping the cheeks of the sobbing boy in a way that almost seemed fatherly. Scout wasn't willing to let go though. The Doctor's shirt was bunched up tightly in his fights, his sobbing slowly reduced itself into soft weeping. The sight broke Spy's cold heart, It had been so long since he last heard the cries of his son.

"Shh Mon lapin, there is no need to cry" Calming a crying baby was not as easy as his wife made It seem. Piérre had already tried almost everything, nothing was helping. Jeremy seemed hellbent on sobbing his tiny little lungs out.

Hoping to just tire his son out, he started swaying softly from side to side. Looking down at his sweet boy, the words started flowing out of his mouth before he could stop them.

À la claire fontaine,
M'en allant promener
J'ai trouvé l'eau si belle
Que je m'y suis baigné

Il y a longtemps que je t'aime
Jamais je ne t'oublierai

Hearing the quiet sniffling of his son brought him back to reality. Letting his balaclava soak in the salty tears; he did not try to wipe them, no matter how disgusting he felt. He willed himself to look back into the infirmary; The Medic was still holding the boy in his arms.

No matter how irrational It was, Spy felt a pang of jealousy in his heart. The Doctor was taking this for granted, he did not realize how lucky he was to hold an angel in his arms. He had lost the right to hold this one a long time ago.

Unable to watch the scene any longer in fear of bursting into tears just like his son before him, he looked away at the wall in front of him. Taking some deep breaths to calm himself down; He had almost managed to compose himself, when he was shook to his core. Scout's quiet, wavering voice was barely audible.

Il y a longtemps que je t'aime
Jamais je ne t'oublierai

The French was terrible, it barely sounded like the language. Medic was shocked he was able to recognize It all. He hummed to himself, gently letting go of Scout to look at him. "Vhat a beautiful song! Vhere did you learn It?" The boy shrugged, wiping his snot off of his nose with the back of his hand. "I dunno, just heard It somewhere I guess. Can't even remember all of It, 's just a part of It." He managed to hiccup out. "Vell, It sounds very nice! I zhink you could be a singer if you practiced a bit more-"

Bang!

The loud noise startled both of the men. Scout looked up immediately and grabbed the closest weapon (which just so happened to be a scalpel). Getting off of the table carefully with Medic's help, the two slowly creeped up to the doors of the infirmary. Taking a deep breath, they looked at each other with conviction. Pushing the door open, they both jump out. They were ready to fight what was probably an enemy that got into the base-!

The hallway was empty, a singular fist-shaped hole in the wall.
