Chapter 1: Here's where everything starts

Chapter Text

You wake up. Your surroundings take shape as the dream fades from your eyes. You can see the long blue braids swaying beside you, as your sister opens her piggy bank to get her savings. The whole group has been waiting this day for weeks, and Powder's obsessive planning feels both a blessing and a curse. If this goes well, you might have one of the best days of your lives, but if something goes wrong, you know the girl will never give you a break.

You both pack up your bags having a casual conversation, and meet your two other siblings and your father, who made breakfast for all of you. You share knowing glances, but as soon as Vander lays eyes on either of you, everything breaks, pretending nothing is going on. You don't want to arouse any suspicions.

Before leaving Zaun to Piltover you meet Ekko, and Vander dismisses you from the door, as you are old enough to take care of your siblings, and so he can take care of "The Last Drop".

The beginning of the plan is simple. You each go to your classes as normal and go through the first class. At 9.37, everyone will ask to go to the bathroom, taking their backpacks with you, and the second part will begin.

It is 9.36, you are looking at the clock above the blackboard. The teacher is explaining something about some equations that you don't understand, but you don't bother much about it either. As soon as he pauses, you raise your voice.

"Professor, I gotta go to the bathroom."

"Lane, can you tell me the answer to this equation?"

Professor Ryze doesn't look too willing to let you go, but it's not something you haven't dealt with before.

"Can you tell me what a blood-stained seat looks like? Because you're about to find out if you don't let me go in the next few seconds."

The professor is stunned in his place, and you make a gesture pointing to your belly as if it's obvious. The man just gives a nod and watches as you stand up at the sign, with your bag in hand.

"Feminine stuff."

You clarify at his confused look, and sling it over your shoulder before walking out of class, walking the first stretch until the corner, then sprinting to the meeting point. If that had had to be your excuse, you don't want to know how Mylo, Claggor or Ekko must have managed, but it doesn't matter too much either. They're there no matter what, and they seem to be waiting for you.

"Come on, come on, come on. If we don't move fast they'll catch us."

Powder's voice is a whisper but you know she'd be yelling if she could. With the grin and adrenaline rush typical of every time you do something you shouldn't, you start running. It's only a matter of time before the teachers realize you're long gone and go looking for you, so every second counts.

The formation was strategically thought out: Your sister leads the way, because she is the mastermind behind it all. Ekko is next to her because where else could he be but there. Mylo and Claggor are the middle section, in case things got messy. You are behind all of them, being in charge of watching the corridors you leave behind, and making sure no one follows you.

The plan is going perfectly so far, you can already see the sun's rays throwing their light into the school through the windows of the wooden double doors that overlooked the luxurious gardens of Piltover High School. Suddenly, you hear a door open and close. It is the science lab, your last hurdle before victory. Your sister starts walking much slower to keep up the facade, and you try to copy her, but by the time you realize who came through that door, it was too late.

"¿Vi?"

The girl said in recognition. You stop dead in your track.

Caitlyn is looking at you, and you can read on her face how she's connecting the dots.

Without thinking too hard, you grab her shoulders and move her against the lockers next to her. You try to make it gentle but fail miserably as the air is forced out of her lungs.

You don't have much time, so you act fast, on instinct.

"Cupcake, listen to me, this is not what you think."

You try to convince her, but there's a reason you weren't accepted into drama classes: improv isn't your thing. She raises one of her delicate eyebrows in your direction and her gaze moves three times before returning to your eyes.

You hear a metallic noise and look in that direction, only to discover your sister letting herself fall against the lockers, while smacking her forehead with one of her hands. Next is Ekko trying to calm her down, then your two brothers beckoning you to hurry up, and, finally, you turn back to the girl you have your hands on, a.k.a. the Princess of the school, a.k.a. your girlfriend, who doesn't take long to answer you.

"Oh, is that so? Because the bags, the hours, and, pff, your whole attitude makes me think you're trying to sneak out of class."

Caitlyn's voice came out harsh, exasperated, but still between whispers, speaking very close to your face to make her point. By noticing this it's true that it's not that hard to tell, at least if they know you, and Caitlyn knows you very well. You let go of her giving a sigh, and scratch the bottom of your hair, grimacing.

"Okay, yeah, it's pretty much what you think."

Your voice comes out a little sheepish, and you pause, thinking about how to get out of this.

"Cait, Powder's been pushing for this all week, and she won't stop torturing me if we screw up now, plus Vander will kill us if he gets another call from the headmistress.

You have to cover us. Please"

Why don't you come with us?"
