Vi doesn't remember much of her life, and chooses to live in the present. She works all day every day, unsure of what she wants to do with her life, but she's happy... or so she tells herself.
Caitlyn has never known freedom, being trapped under the hawk-like gaze of her mother. In one final act of rebellion, she sneaks out to experience what the outside world is like.

“An avalanche?” Caitlyn repeats as Vi crosses to the window.
Ekko’s voice carries from the radio. “A minor one, and thankfully there weren’t many people on the trails today, but Vander and Grayson are still sending out a team and we have EMS on standby.”
“We can’t stay here,” Vi tries to argue, but Caitlyn silences her placing a hand on Vi’s arm and frowning.
“They have a point,” Caitlyn says. “We shouldn’t put ourselves in danger-”
“Bullshit,” Vi spats. She yanks her arm away, the rushed movement jerking Caitlyn’s wrist painfully, causing her to suck in a breath as static zips up her arm. “Our job is to help people. We’re professionals. We can handle it.”
The cabin is quiet for a tense moment. Caitlyn still stares at Vi, waiting for more curses, expecting an outburst. They’ve been like this for the past year; butting heads and fighting over simple things. By now, Caitlyn knows Vi’s ticks, she knows the signs of when the redhead is about to blow, and right now, she’s desperately looking for the twitch in Vi’s jaw and the fire burning behind silver eyes.
The sex is casual. It scratches an itch. It doesn’t mean anything anymore.

“Caitlyn.”
“Oh,” Jinx says knowingly, glancing Vi’s way out of the corner of her eye. “That’s the, uh, the cop girl, right? Maddie’s ex?”
A chorus of mutters and nods is the response.
“I’m being warned about her,” Vi tells her sister and Jinx blows her bangs out of her face.
“Good,” she says, almost snappishly. “Yeah, don’t date cop girl. You should date someone cool.”
“I’m not going to date anyone, not for a while. I need to get back on my feet first,” says Vi, drumming her fingers against the condensation of the glass. Thinking of Cupcake in her contacts, and that teasing smile.
Everything in Vi’s life right now is starting over. She’s spending the holidays on her sister’s pull-out futon, trying to make sense of the avalanche of changes, salvage what’s left of her family and figure out what she’s going to do next. The last thing she expects to do is include the beautiful woman she runs into on her first day in town, or this Caitlyn that everyone’s warning her to stay away from.

Summary
“Have any of you seen combat?” she dares to ask. It was the first question she wanted to ask the moment she entered the room, the answer already clear in the nuisance of their house banners flooding the throne room, decorative feathers and jewels hanging from all of them. Peacocks among wolves.
They all stare at her with red stained cheeks. “Real combat,” Caitlyn clarifies when one of the knights begins to step forward, his stature of someone who’s barely seen the sun outside of a brothel. He steps back only for the nameless knight to take a step forward.
Caitlyn doesn’t recall closing the distance, something in the knight acting as a siren call to the princess. “You,” Caitlyn states simply. It isn’t a judgement or an accusation. But remembrance. The way her gloved fingers felt when taking the favor from Caitlyn’s hands, her helmet still hiding the whole of her face.
“The one and only, Princess” she quips quietly. She doesn’t bow her head as the others had when she met them at eye level. No. This knight raises her chin. Not in defiance but in something Caitlyn can only describe as a challenging reverence.
I dare you to choose me as I am.
