What ISN'T Going to Happen in "Watching and Dreaming"

Summary:

I can't stress this enough, people, this is NOT what we're going to get. The people behind this show are talented and care about the quality of their content. They are NOT going to throw out everything they've been building since Episode 1 just to copy every other isekai. Now stop gaslighting me.

Chapter 1

Chapter Text

Amity stared at Luz, stunned.  "What did you just say?"  Surely she must have heard wrong.

Luz looked down at her feet to avoid meeting her soon-to-be-ex-girlfriend's gaze.  "I said, I came to say goodbye.  I'm...  I'm going back to the Human Realm with my Mom."  She wiped a tear from her eye.  "It's been... really cool knowing you.  Lov- being girlfriends with you.  I'm going to miss you.  A-a lot."

"Then stay!" Amity begged.  She didn't bother wiping away her tears.  "You don't have to go back!  Stay with me in this world!  I know you like it better here!  You fit in better!  In that world, you can't do magic!  People don't appreciate you there!  In this one, you're the hero who defeated Emperor Belos!  Please!  I..."  She began to sob as she continued.  "I don't know what I'll do without you...  Luz...  Please don't go..."

Luz shook her head.  "I have to, Amity," she insisted sadly.  She held up a book:  How to Write a Cliche Isekai for Neurotypical People.  "The book says I have to go back.  The Human Realm is where I was born, so it has to be the place where I find whatever lasting happiness I get to have.  If I try to make a life here, it's like I'm playing pretend and refusing to grow up."

"But you're not!" Amity cried.  "You didn't pretend to defeat Belos!  You didn't pretend to learn magic!  You didn't pretend to love King or Eda or Willow or Gus or me!  Just because this world is wonderful and magical doesn't mean it's not real!  You can mature and grow up and still have good things, Luz!  Why are you so insistent on not being happy?!  Didn't you and your Mom talk about this in the last episode?!"

"Yeah," Luz admitted.  "But she came around when she saw this book.  It's the rules, Amity.  I have to go back."

The two girls embraced each other and shared one final kiss.  Then Luz turned and began walking away.

"Luz," Amity said.  "I love you."

Luz heaved a sigh.  "I- I love you too, Amity."  And then she walked away.

She walked back to the Owl House, where Eda and King and her Mom were waiting for her.  (Not Hooty, though.  Hooty had transformed into a hole and then died.)

"Are you ready to go?"  Her Mom asked.

"Yeah," Luz replied.  "I guess so."  She hugged Eda and King tightly.  "I'm gonna miss you two so much."

Eda patted Luz on the head with her remaining hand.  "I'll miss you too, kiddo."

"Me too," King added, his voice muffled by Luz's belly.

"I wish I could stay," Luz said.

"I wish you could too," Camila admitted sadly.  "You deserve to make your life in a place like this, someplace where you could be happy and fulfilled.  But I'm afraid that's just not how the universe works."

"Yeah," Eda agreed.  "It was probably predestined or some shit.  You know what I always say:  us weirdoes just have to stay in our places, change ourselves to fit in as well as we can, and be horribly lonely until we eventually die.  Also, we're not allowed to kill ourselves."

"I wish I could, Eda," Luz sobbed.  "I wanna kill myself so bad right now."

"Me too, kiddo," Eda replied.  "But we're not going to, right?"

Luz nodded.  "Right.  The world is the way it is, and there's nothing we can do to change it or escape it.  We just have to deal with it."  She let go of Eda and King, wiped her eyes, and followed Camila through the portal door.

Vee was waiting for them on the other side.  "Did you say your goodbyes, Luz?" she asked.

Luz nodded.  "Yep.  I'm ready to never do magic ever again."

Vee picked up her rocket launcher, took aim, and fired a rocket at the portal door, which promptly exploded.

"Wait, weren't you going to go back to the Demon Realm?" Luz asked, confused.

"Hell no," Vee answered, setting her rocket launcher back down.  "I said I was never going back to that world and I meant it, even if that means slowly starving to death without any magic to eat."

Luz held up the isekai book again.  "But the rules say that I'm not allowed to find a better life in another world.  How come you are?"

"You're a human and the main character," Vee explained.  "I'm neither, so the same rules don't apply to me."

"Ah," Luz said, nodding.  "Wanna go watch cartoons so we can feel better?"

"Can't.  We're both way behind on our schoolwork, so we gotta go do that."

Luz sighed.  "Right.  Let's get to that."

Meanwhile, on the other side of the now-destroyed portal....

"What do we do now?" King asked, looking up at Eda.

"Well," said Eda.  "The reasonable thing would be to call up Raine.  They admitted they still love me, so I bet they'd be willing to get back together with me and move in with us.  Then, we could still be a family together, even without Luz."

"So will you call them?" King asked.

Eda thought for a moment.  "Nah.  Instead I'm gonna go get blackout drunk and leave you here all on your own."

"WHAT?!" King screeched in shock.  "But you've been clean for almost a month!"

"Well, now I'm falling off the wagon.  I can't deal with this kind of emptiness sober."  She started walking off.

"You wouldn't feel so empty if you just let people into your life!  You can do that!  You aren't a wanted criminal anymore, and you can control the Owl Beast now!  There is no good reason for you to keep isolating yourself!"

"Sorry King, I can't hear you over the sound of the apple blood calling me, byeeeee!"

Notes:

If anything in this fic happens in the finale, I am going to be PISSED. (Except for maybe Hooty's death. I could live with that, as long as he goes out heroically. Also Vee getting to stay in the Human Realm.)

But I don't think it will, because it just wouldn't make sense. It wouldn't fit with the themes that were established in Season 1 Episode 1 and have persisted throughout the show thus far. It wouldn't be a satisfying conclusion for any of the main characters. It would retroactively ruin most of the show. I just can't see Dana Terrace letting that happen.

And before you tell me "she said she hates happy endings," no she didn't. She said she hates the Happily Ever After trope. That's different.

But I'd appreciate any comments telling me YOUR thoughts on the matter.
