“Here” Nene was having a typical lunch break at Kamiyama High, playing games she needed to finish or watching her favourite musical theatre segments alone in her classroom. Well, she was alone until she heard that voice.
Rui was standing in front of her desk, hand outstretched. “I bought these at the school store. I accidentally bought two so I thought you might want a pack.”
In his hand, was a packet of heart shaped candy. The ones that melt in your mouth; you would typically get them to give to your significant lover for valentines day. It wasn’t valentines day, it was April. Rui also wasn’t her significant other. But he did say that he just accidentally bought two, so it was probably just a kind gesture between friends, despite their relationship being more awkward recently.
“Thanks” Nene replied, taking the packet of candy.
Rui walked, or rushed, out of the classroom. It was strange, she thought, but decided not to pay any mind to it and instead popped one of the hearts into her mouth. She pretty much forgot about the incident, and only remembered once she went to reach for another one to find that they were all gone.
Through the rest of her afternoon classes, Nene had a strong craving for more of those candies. So when the school day was over, Nene made her way toward the school store to buy another packet. Once it was her turn in line, she pulled out roughly 200 yen from her pocket.
“Can i have a pack of the candy hearts please?” She asked the woman behind the counter.
A look of confusion was plastered on the lady’s face. “We don’t… sell those here… sorry, miss.”
Nene then recalled that the candy was in an unsealed plastic bag, as if they were homemade. She also remembered the words ‘i like you’ on each piece, which was unusual for a regular packet.
Maybe there was more to this than just a simple thing between two best friends.
