Work Text:
It was funny how Van’s most successful jobs always ended up coming to bite him in the ass; days, weeks, months, sometimes even years later.
Less than a month prior to Van meeting the party, he found himself on a small, aristocratic planet that homed an art museum with some of the most valuable pieces known to the world. Of course, Van had managed to find a blip in the security: a combination of a cold-spot on the arcane crystal cameras and a shift in security staff made for the perfect opportunity.
Everything went to plan. Van and his partner/boyfriend, Miarel Merynkete had managed to snatch up a multi-million dollar statue without setting off any alarms. Van was on cloud nine, which should have been his first sign that something was about to go very wrong. It always did, didn’t it?
“Hey you! Stop right there!” A gruff voice boomed from down the dim hallway.
Van and Miarel gave each other a quick glance, brains moving in tandem as they quickly came up with the same idea, which they verbalized to each other quite simply:
“Run.”
And run they did. That’s what Van liked about Miarel: he was an adrenaline-junkie who was always willing to break the rules, just like him.
So cool.
Of course, all good things must come to an end, or such is life, or whatever people say, Van wasn’t really the type for flowery sentiments.
Maybe that’s why, when the security guard was about to grab him, Van made a snap decision.
“Sorry, Miarel,” he said, giving Miarel an award-winning smile before shoving him into the security guard, sending them both crashing into the glittery pavement.
“You fucking asshole!” Miarel yelled as Van made his escape alone. “You’re dead, Van!”
Van was sure that someday, Miarel would come around. They’d see each other again, and all would be back to normal. It’s not like Miarel had broken up with him, right?
