“Please,” she whispers it this time, looking up at him from beneath rapidly dampening lashes. “Please.” At this point, she’s not sure what she’s begging for anymore—for him to leave, for him to stay and witness her last moments, for him to kill her. Her throat is sore, her vision’s blurred, and she’s barely hanging on. “I don’t want to hurt,” she tells him, a mark against her failing body as much as it’s a plea for kindness, mercy, from him and his men. “I don’t want to turn.” An admission she hadn’t planned on making, brought on by her delirium.
“Oh honey,” he says, his voice gentle—a contradiction to the way Rey knows men often are. She watches him as the edges of her vision grow dark—watches as he reaches out for her before shaking his head and pulling back, seeming to think better of it. “Everything’s going to be okay,” he promises her in return. “I’ll make sure of it.”
