Summary
“I’m going for a swim,” Kaveh says. “I refuse to suffer in this heat any longer.”
Not far off their camp lies a crystalline lake. Its surface had seemed so inviting when they passed it by earlier. Alhaitham finds himself longing for it now, to cool off and to wash away the smoke of the fire that clings to him like a curse. He rises to his feet, fighting the slight unsteady sway of the alcohol in his veins. He feels Kaveh watch him, and refuses to make eyecontact. Instead, he busies himself with clearing away the bottles that lie scattered around the fire.
Then, Kaveh speaks up with a softness that catches Alhaitham slightly off guard. “Won’t you join me?”Or: They wish they'd never done it. And then they do it again.
