Work Text:

It was double date night for Sonic and Shadow, as was pretty common for them at this point. Their good friends Amy and Blaze had suggested a karaoke bar for their next get-together. Sonic was enthusiastic as always. Shadow, a bit more reticent, but swayed by his girlfriend’s good mood.

The two couples approached the venue, Sonic with her arm wrapped around Shadow. “Pretty out of the way place, Ames. Where’d you hear about it?”

“Cream told me all about how Vector and Vanilla frequent this place, I figured we could give it a shot too!” They beamed, holding Blaze in a similar fashion to her fellow hedgehog.

“I’ll admit, I was a bit reluctant to participating in something so… Revealing…” Blaze spoke up, holding the door open for the rest. “But, Amy swayed me. I couldn’t stand to see her pout for so long.”

“Hehe. I’m talented like that.” She puts a finger to her cheek and sticks her tongue out. So many years later, and she still hadn’t fully left her quirky teen years behind.

“You are, and I love you for it.” A brief kiss on the head. “Just don’t expect me to go right away. I need to get a lay of the land first.”

“Hey, don’t sweat it! I’m sure Amy’s dying to get up on stage.” She remembered the days when Amy would belt out their girly pop rock ballads while chasing her beloved Sonic. She’s eager to hear them sing in a situation that doesn’t involve her possibly being clobbered by their hammer.

The four of them grab a table, about two dozen feet off from the stage. The machine itself looked pretty old-school. Probably didn’t have anything made in the past 10 years on it.

Sonic looked to her lover, looking… Fairly neutral. They didn’t seem to have any strong opinions on karaoke as a whole, moreso just doing it for Sonic and Amy’s enjoyment. They had taken to scrolling through their phone to pass the time.

… Hm. That wasn’t any good. What’s the point of a date if your partner’s not into it at all? What’s she gonna do to get her interested…

Oh. Yeah. Karaoke bar. She could sing. Thankfully, someone had just finished belting out an old 80’s power ballad, leaving the floor open.

“I’m goin’ up! Wish me luck!” Sonic leaves her seat, trotting to the stage as Amy and Blaze cheered her on. Shadow momentarily looked up from their phone, flashing a small smile at their girlfriend.

Sonic stepped up to the stage, looking over the machine to pick the perfect song. She’s obviously a huge fan of rock, but she’s not really feeling that tonight. Something a bit more… Passionate.

She looks over to her group’s table. Shadow sits, relatively uninterested looking. Idea.

She scrolls down the list, looking for just the song to get her attention. The one that catches her eye, a funk song from the 90’s. Shadow’s listened to this artist before, once or twice at least. She thinks she remembers the song well enough?

Tapping on the song, the track begins playing. The familiar synth line briefly grabs Shadow’s attention, and he looks up from his phone.

“This one goes out to my amazing partner!” Sonic points a finger to the ceiling, swaying her hips rhythmically.

I must’ve died and gone to heaven

‘Cause it was quarter past eleven

On a Saturday in 1999

… Shadow’s eyes widen when she finally recognizes the lyrics. Sonic’s voice was a little whiny, not quite used to singing that much, but her voice training helped her reach that familiar falsetto a bit easier.

Right across from where I'm standing

On the dance floor she was landing

It was clear that she was from another time

Very slowly, but shakily, the ebony hedgehog’s hands reach her face. He was burning up.

“Do you know this song, Shadow?” Amy leaned over, noticing the added splash of scarlet on her friend’s cheeks.

“ Y-yes . “ She covers her face, blushing even harder.

Like some baby Barbarella

With the stars as her umbrella

She asked me if I'd like to magnetise

Do I have to go star-trekking

'Cause it's you I should be checking

So she laserbeamed me with her cosmic eyes

As the chorus came around, Sonic stepped further up the stage, eyes locked on her lover from across the room. A handful of whoops and cheers rang out.

She's just a cosmic girl

Oh, yeah

From another galaxy

My heart's at zero gravity

She's from a cosmic world

Putting me in ecstasy

Transmitting on my frequency

She's cosmic

God. Of course she’d pick a song like this. Her and her stupid tricks. He wants to punch her so bad. But like. Softly. With his lips. Punch her dumb adorable face with his lips.

I'm scanning all my radars

Well, she said she's from a quasar

Forty thousand million light years away

It's a distant solar system

I tried to phone but they don't list 'em

So I asked her for a number all the same

“She’s awfully confident up on stage.” Blaze’s eyes take their time rolling over to Shadow in his utterly flustered state. “I wonder why that is.”

“ sh-shut. Up. “ Tiny squeaks croak out from behind her rings.

She said, "Step in my transporter

So I can teleport ya

All around my heavenly body"

Oh, this could be a close encounter

I should take care not to flounder

Sends me into hyperspace, when I see her pretty face

Sonic traipsed around the wooden floor, fluffed up quills bouncing with each sashay. As Shadow looked up again during the second chorus, Sonic took note, and twirled the mic cord around her finger while bending over, eyes locked with her partner’s. Shadow could feel the steam hissing off her face after that.

Sends me into hyperspace when I see her pretty face

Sends me into hyperspace when I see her pretty face

Sends me into hyperspace when I see her pretty face

Sends me into hyperspace when I see her pretty face

She went into the last chorus swinging, not halting her momentum until the very end. She tried to hit a few high notes at the end, only to end up cracking at one of them. That only made Shadow simmer even further.

As the music faded, another round of applause rang through the hall, and Sonic stepped off stage and back to her table with the other three.

“Ahhhhh! You did so good out there!” Amy took hold of Sonic’s shoulder, gently shaking her. “I never knew you had pipes like that!”

“I must say,” Blaze leaned over from behind Amy. “I never took you as a fan of funk.”

“Oh, it’s alright.” Looking to her right. “I just know someone who likes it a little more than me.”

“ i hate you ssssooo much “ Barely looking up from her hands, vermillion peepers sliding up into view. There was such a distinct mixture of bashfulness and irritation in them.

“Love ya too, Shady.” She offered a meager peck on the head as consolation. Shadow took this as a challenge and pulled her back in, locking lips with her. One more, slightly tamer round of applause came about for the lovely couple.

“There.” They let go, setting Sonic back upright in her chair. “Now we’re even.”

The pigmentation from Shadow’s face had seemingly made its way over to Sonic’s, complete with a distinct, black kiss mark over her already ruby red lips.

She loved those colors together.

Notes:

It's fanfic tradition to include at least lyrics from one of your favorite songs in your stories, it just so happened I got the idea for this fic after listening to a good chunk of Jamiroquai's discography about an hour before putting this up. Fit perfectly, too!
