A Fire Kindled in An Odd Match

Summary:

“You used me for a damn sundae.” His tone was deadly.

“Oh c’mon, love. You don’t get such a lucrative offer like this these days! In this economy? We’ve just hit the jackpot! Well, I suppose my intrusive thoughts got the better of me, as they say, y’know?”

“My intrusive thoughts are making a lucrative offer to strangle you right then and there.”

Rouge decided to pay her former fling a visit after having her flight back to her workplace delayed, and the two discussed the unlikely relationship that sprouted between the Hero of Mobius and the Lord of Darkness.

Work Text:

“So, how’s married life working out for you, handsome?”

“Well, I’m not considering committing bigamy with you, so there’s that.”

“Seriously though, when is Blue going to tie the knot? Growing old waiting for you guys to throw a party of a lifetime over here, with all the fanfare and whatnot. Look at these flabby cheeks!”

“Surprised to find you more invested in this than the both of us are.”

“Hey, I’m just happy for you boys, alright?”

Just that?”

“...I’m pleading the fifth. Besides, it’s been ages since Blue proposed to you.”

“If you really want it to happen, why not take up Sonic’s advice — be the change you want to see. Go ahead and be our pro bono wedding organiser.”

“Oh, believe me sugar, I’d be beyond honoured to. That’s a really lovely ring by the way — sapphire is an interesting pick.”

“I can get Sonic to show you where he bought it from if you want. Even get one for you altogether.”

“You’d allow Blue to do that, for me? Aww, you really are the best, love! Blue doesn’t have the slightest clue how lucky he is.”

“Heh. Ironically, I get told by others to appreciate Sonic more. Speaking of which, I’m curious — you call Sonic ‘Blue’ all the time. So what does that make me…?”

“...let’s change topics, okay?”

It was a blessing in disguise for Rouge. Her flight back to HQ had been delayed for another day, and she decided to make use of the inconvenience to pay her former crush a visit. She applied the term “former”, as she reasoned it would have been distasteful to continue her pursuit for the Dark Prince after his engagement. Not that His Highness ever appreciated her advances anyway.

The coffee shop was a merited pick by Shadow; a modest corner lot overseeing a spectacular view of the setting sun the seaside city had to offer. Shadow was however busy shielding his face with his combat jacket and a pair of sporty sunglasses, as the final rays of sunlight persistently invaded his field of sight, determined to blind him till the end. Rouge tried to offer an exasperated Shadow her flamboyant beach hat, to no avail.

A waiter eventually approached the couple, placing down their ordered drinks gently onto the coffee table in front of them.

“The long black for the gentleman, and the latte for the lady.”

Shadow raised his hand as the waiter attempted to place down the cafe’s complimentary sugar packets complementing the drinks.

“I like it black, thanks.” Shadow noted. He promptly drank from his glass as the waiter stared on, horrified. He turned to Rouge with bewilderment, who just simply nodded.

“Erm…” The waiter stuttered, yet to recover from the horrors he had just bore witness to. “O-oh yes, the cafe is offering a free sundae ice cream for couples for a promotion! So what flavour would you two like?”

Shadow raised his eyebrows before recognising the common cultural misconception. “Erm, I think you misunderstand. You see, we—”

“We’ll take strawberry.”

Shadow looked back at Rouge’s unprompted betrayal with utter shock and dismay. Rouge tried to ignore eye contact as she faced the waiter expectantly.

“You two can select a different flavour. What would your partner like?”

“Ah, he’d like mint.”

It was hard for Rouge to enjoy her heavenly strawberry-mint combo when she had invoked the silent wrath of the Dark Prince, folding his arms firmly opposite of her. The privilege of being able to consume the sundae twice as fast with the double straw however improved things.

She finally released her hold onto the straws before a brain freeze set in, and shrugged at a furious Shadow. “ Whaaaaaat? ” She knew she would have to break the suffocating silence she created eventually, even when her cheeks are filled with glacial delicacy.

“You used me for a damn sundae .” His tone was deadly. He seemed to have laser sights lined up on her from beneath his shades.

“Oh c’mon, love. You don’t get such a lucrative offer like this these days! In this economy? We’ve just hit the jackpot ! Well, I suppose my intrusive thoughts got the better of me, as they say, y’know?”

“My intrusive thoughts are making a lucrative offer to strangle you right then and there.”

“Alright, alright. I’m sorry. I… just couldn’t resist! Strawberry and mint! A big sundae, for free !”

Shadow furrowed his eyebrows further. Rouge could only smile sheepishly as she slowly put down her generous spoonful of ice cream.

“Erm, would you like some of it?” Rouge innocently slid the sundae to Shadow as a dubious peace offering. “After all, it’s meant for the two of us.”

“I don’t even like strawberry and mint.”

As Rouge managed to pacify Shadow by promising him a favour, Rouge wondered how quietly she could enjoy the rest of her chilly sundae without annoying Shadow further. Shadow only stared at the horizon as he sipped his steaming coffee angrily, the temperature of the drink seemingly matching that of his.

“Erm, does Blue enjoy ice cream?”

“I doubt he would anymore, after he hears you threw him under the bus for it.”

“Geez, Shadow. I said I was sorry. I didn’t mean to make fun of you guys.”

“Fine.” Shadow huffed before placing down his glass. “He likes chocolate.”

“Ah, I see. And you?”

“Not telling you.”

“Why not?”

“You’re definitely going to pull this trick again and use my preference as leverage.”

“Just tell me, for Chaos’ sake.”

“Vanilla.”

“Ah. Unsurprising.”

“And what’s that supposed to mean??”

“Nothin’, love.”

It didn’t take long for Rouge to wolf down the entire sundae, which impressed Shadow. Down to her failing to wipe off the prominent stains on her floral spring dress. It reminded him of his partner during the carnival’s hotdog eating competition. The contest had to close when no one wanted to participate after learning Sonic was in it, but he still insisted on at least allowing him to have the uneaten hotdogs.

In a way, the self-serving bat resembled his partner. He just happened to like one of them.

“I never expected you two to hit it off, honestly.” Rouge noted as she dabbed her glossy lips politely with a silk handkerchief.

“Mhm. We get that a lot.”

“No, my point being that — I always felt you two had good chemistry together, but not to a point you guys like each other more than just friends, you know? In fact, the timespan you guys transitioned from enemies to friends to lovers is impressive on its own, if I may note! One moment you guys have your hands wrapped around each others’ throats, the next you guys have your arms wrapped around each others’ waists.” Rouge cupped her hands as if to swoon over the relationship. “Ah, boy love. How sweet and pure.”

Shadow rolled his eyes so hard he nearly pulled a muscle. “Well, it happens.”

“So, have you guys found any common interests so far? Spending time with each other and all.”

“I don’t think this would be relevant for a healthy relationship.”

“Don’t be silly — of course it is, love! In fact, it’s essential ! Now, out with it!”

“Well, if you insist. We established that he likes baseball and I like chess.”

“Oh, what else?”

"And that he worships hip hop while I prefer classical rock.”

“Well–”

“He prefers morning walks while I prefer nightly ones. He wants amusement parks while I favour museums. He goes for food stalls while I opt for restaurants. He adores an athletic look while I prefer more militaristic. He–”

“Alright, alright! I get the point!” Rouge massaged her head to relieve the onslaught of tension. Or maybe the brain freeze too.

“I could keep going on and on.” Shadow smiled as he sipped his coffee.

“And the relationship still… going strong, I hope? Not meaning any offence, but I had my doubts since you two are, well, evidently polar opposites.”

“Yet, despite all that, you’d be surprised to know Sonic got these for me.” Shadow reached to lift his nicely tailored combat jacket with his dog tag necklace to show them off. “Has better taste than I assumed he would. Opposites attract.”

Apparently . How come, by the way?” Rouge scooted closer to Shadow eagerly, as if cozying up to storytime by the fireplace before bedtime. “Do tell more, love.”

“And why should I do that?” Shadow folded his arms, his eyebrows raising from his shades.

“Well… I’ll buy you a vanilla sundae?”

“Make it triple.” Shadow corrected as he leaned forward. “With chocolate syrup and sprinkles.”

Shadow stared on into the galaxy, seemingly admiring the infinite vastness of the colourful void. The world was safe. Black Doom defeated. He had kept his word to Maria. He had done his part.

Was there any use for him anymore in this world?

He didn’t even have an identity anymore. He had rejected it.

Was there a need to create a new one? What purpose would it serve? Deep down, he sensed some truth in Black Doom’s words. He may have rejected his past, but the rest of the world was not obligated to. He had saved the world, but would the world save him?

He felt tired. Fatigued. He wished he could go back to his long slumber. Away from the reality of things. He had seen enough. He had known enough. It was time for him to fade back into obscurity. To faze out of relevance. This time it had nothing to do with serving interests. It was what he was expected to do. He had outstayed his welcome.

Now he just needed to find an excuse out of this Chaos damned catastrophe he had been dragged into.

If he was hoping to get any amusement out of the gang of hooligans’ bizarre methods of enjoyment and hedonism, he was disappointed. The overhead lights were shining everywhere, taking turns in blinding a disgruntled Shadow. The food was mediocre at best, not that he appreciated them to start off with, and the party ran out of drinks within the first hour. It was a miraculously functional disaster.

The vibrant atmosphere in the rented seaside beach cabin was unable to appeal to a sullen Shadow. The loud music was starting to get to his nerves. Why did he agree to joining this? Just because it seemed appropriate? He didn’t know this word was ever in his vocabulary. He must have lost his senses from the transformation with the Emeralds.

It seemed that the partygoers were more enthusiastic in celebrating their victory than the one who actually accomplished the feat. Perhaps they were all just too happy to receive a new lease in life, but Shadow couldn’t be even less bothered to share in their exuberance. He just wanted to get out of here. But where to? He never considered the prospect of him being homeless — and now he missed his only chance in going back to where he came from. Just splendid .

Shadow grunted as he got up from his tropical armchair by a secluded corner, to move to an even more secluded corner by the beach.

It was that blasted hedgehog again . When was it never him? Thinking he’s some sort of hotshot, inviting himself into his many missions, never giving him a moment’s peace. Actively wanting to participate in his fight on the muse of being “the Hero of Mobius”. You couldn’t get any more narcissistic than that.

Why didn’t he reject the brat’s intrusion of privacy this time? Was… he getting used to his presence? The very idea of that was sickening and Shadow silently gagged to himself.

Speaking of which, where is the damned idiot? The audacity of that hedgehog to not show up at the very party he invited him to in the first place. Unlike himself, Sonic had well established himself with the community. He had charisma, no doubt about that. The people would receive a hero better over an immortal half-alien being anyway.

Sonic was the perfect character that Shadow thought he should be. Accepted by all, loved by many. Held in high esteem and granted genuine respect. Or at least, he wasn’t spiralling aimlessly in the darkness for all perpetuity, living a spiritually nomadic life with no sense of purpose. Shunned or feared by anyone who bothered to heed him any attention.

Sonic really had it well. He had everything. Naturally, he’ll take the credit for saving the world once more as he had usually done, and the failed experiment of the disgraced doctor will eventually be one with the dirt.

Shadow wondered if he envied the life Sonic had, but refused to think of it further.

As Shadow planted himself onto a discarded beach mat shrouded in darkness, he heard a gentle grunt as he sat on something soft . Shadow felt his quills stand on their ends as he flew into a fight or flight reaction. He didn’t expect anyone else to venture so far out alone in the desolate night, and he didn’t plan to hold back from getting physical if need be.

The moonlight was minimal, but he could see an outline protruding from the void by the sea, having no business stealing his rightful seat.

“Geez, Shadow, you nearly sat on me there.” A familiar voice spoke out followed by a light chuckle. Shadow lowered his fists and furrowed his eyebrows.

So that’s where the blasted hedgehog decided to hide himself in. In his own hiding spot. But of course.

“Aren’t you joining the others?” Sonic gestured to the ever-increasingly rowdy party back in the cabin. They were now forming a sugar-driven conga line, as the rickety wooden structure threatened to give way with every tremor.

“I should be asking you that, hedgehog.” Shadow replied sternly, folding his arms. “What business do you have here?”

“Ah, well, nothing really…” Sonic laid back and rested his head on his arms.

“Then might I suggest you excuse yourself to join that deranged disaster back there.”

“Oh c’mon, Shadow — can’t a guy catch a break? I mean, you yourself came here for the same thing, right?”

“I’ve been doing that ever since I came here.” Shadow exhaled sharply. “And if I’m going to be forced to sit through the entire event, I prefer to reflect in the darkness alone.”

“Alright, fine.” Sonic reluctantly got up. There was the expected annoyance in his tone, but Shadow also picked up an unusual dash of gloom from it. His eyes followed Sonic as he crawled his way back into the vibrant event.

“Actually,” Shadow raised his voice from his monotone wavelength to Sonic, who turned around. He glanced at the beach mat as he gripped his arms tighter. “I suppose… we could share the darkness.”

Shadow’s suspicion was proven. Sonic would have been blabbering his mouth off the moment he sat, probably from the excitement he was given permission to share the Dark Lord’s space for once. The opposite happened. Shadow was looking at his own reflection, as Sonic stared into the night sky calm and collected. Yet to utter a single word. Life was effectively drained out of him.

Shadow felt disturbed, but was it his role to step in?

“...what’s on your mind?” Shadow attempted a conversation starter, trying not to sound too empathetic. Nothing too much, in case he woke Sonic up from his stupor.

“Hm? I just feel a little tired, that’s all.”

“And why’s that?”

“Well, I wouldn’t want to bother you, Shadow. Doesn’t seem–”

“Out with it, hedgehog.”

“All this… crisis. Threats and dangers, thwarting the potential end to all life on the planet as we know it. Left me quite exhausted.” Sonic shook his head. “Don’t you feel the same, Shadow?”

“Goes without saying. And yet, you find it appropriate to invite me to this even more mentally exhausting jamboree.”

“My bad.” Sonic shook his head. “Thought that both of us could use a break, y’know?”

“Yet it doesn’t have much of a positive effect on you as you hoped, as it did on me.”

“Yeah, stupid, right? I know. I can’t seem to do anything right.”

Shadow raised his eyebrows. “Don’t make me laugh. With the sheer amount of effort you put into saving the planet, you should be in charge of it. At least you lived up to your egotistical title for yourself.”

“Oh, I didn’t come up with that name. The people did.”

“Of course. Why not go ahead and drown yourself in their showers of affection and admiration? They’re still waiting for you.” Shadow gestured to the brightly lit cabin that shone like a star in the darkened beachside. “You could’ve taken on this entire fiasco without needing me to change sides.”

“But I couldn’t have.”

“...what do you mean?”

“Shadow, I…” Sonic got up wearily. “Don’t tell this to the others. I… don’t think I can do this anymore.”

“What?”

“The pressure’s getting to me. being the planet’s guardian... You don’t have to sing tales of me like the rest do — we both know you did the lion’s share of the work. Without your help… I wouldn’t have been able to stop Black Doom. Or even you.”

“...and why are you telling me this?”

“Well, I thought maybe you’d be able to sympathise with me. After all, we went through the same things, didn’t we? Even more than I did, this time around.”

“What, so you’re expecting me to comfort you or some sort?” Shadow scoffed. “Give you gratification on your pondering to resign as planetary guardian?”

“I…”

“Sonic.” Shadow turned to Sonic’s general direction, guided by the brief illuminance of moonlight. “I can’t believe I have to be the one telling you this of all people. They need you. You’re the Hero of Mobius. You fulfilled your role to the fullest, and I doubt anyone else would do a better job than you do.”

“You… don’t understand. I can only do so much, for so long. I’m not that great of a hero you view me to be. I’m immature and rash, coming off as decisive and steadfast to others. I could only hold onto the pretence for so long…”

“Then stop making it a pretence.” Shadow grabbed onto Sonic’s shoulders. “Stop, for one damn moment, this defeatist attitude and instead actually focus on what you can achieve. It’s beyond idiotic to constantly dwell on what you can’t. If you know you can’t, so what? Do you really prefer to prove yourself right?”

“I… can’t do this alone.”

“Then don’t. What, they made you sign a contract upon enlisting as Guardian, that you are to tackle the world’s problems on your own?”

“I’m expected to do so.”

“Then turn it back to them. They can’t expect this to be a one-way commitment. Ask for help. You didn’t seem to have a problem enlisting your gang of outlaws before. Delegate more responsibility, if you really trust them as much as you appear to. Form your own Knights of the Round Table. Whatever. I’m sure they’d be more than happy to be a permanent member of your world-saving dream team.”

Sonic chuckled. “Are you seriously comparing me with King Arthur?”

“Are you seriously not taking my forced therapy session with you seriously?”

“Sorry.”

“Sonic,” Shadow sighed as he laid back down on the mat. “No one’s perfect. Not surprising you haven’t known this by now. Don’t get crushed by your own inflated ego, and don't let others inflate it further. It’s good to know your limits, but don’t keep yourself bound by them.”

“Wow, Shadow…” Sonic took a moment to process everything. “I, erm… I don’t know what to say. How did you know all this?”

“...I learnt it from a friend.” Shadow looked back into the starry night, now glistening even brighter.

Sonic looked at Shadow for a good moment without his notice, as if he were intrigued with how the latter’s face was illuminated under the glowing moonlight. That was when he realised the contrast had caused them both to be increasingly swallowed by the void.

“Man, I didn’t know it could get this dark.” Sonic rubbed his shoulders as he looked around him only for his eyesight to fail him further. Perhaps he felt the need to break the deafening silence. “I think we need to build a campfire if we don’t want to trip on seashells later.”

Shadow turned around, shrouding his face back into the nightly obscurity. “A… what?”

“A campfire? Y’know, so that we could see better?”

“You mean… a makeshift fire typically constructed in a camping site; serving as a source of light and warmth as well as heat for the practice of preparing food, or as an insect and predator deterrent?”

Sonic stared at Shadow silently even after he was done talking.

“...yyyees, a beacon , of sorts. I guess you could say that.” Sonic looked at Shadow apprehensively as he leaned away. “Geez, were you busy reading the dictionary when others were out camping or something?”

“Shut up, hedgehog.” Shadow snapped. “I learnt everything about the planet back in the ARK through books.”

“So… you’ve never built one before?”

“...as a matter of fact, we did , hedgehog.” Shadow folded his arms, dignified. “Maria was so insistent we replicate what we read from the books we managed to put one together. Before the professor screamed bloody murder when he saw what we used as burning material.”

“Oh, cool!” Sonic enthusiastically revealed a scattered pile of sticks on the sand in front of him. “Could you help me build one then? I couldn’t for the life of me.”

Shadow looked at Sonic with disbelief.

The brightness and warmth were worth it after all the effort the two hedgehogs had put in while setting up the campfire. Shadow barked orders confidently for Sonic to fetch materials, as he later stared at the gathered items wondering what to do with them. Nevertheless, the campfire was built.

Sonic laid back to admire their work as Shadow continued to observe the campfire curiously.

“You're that fascinated with what an actual campfire looks like, huh?” Sonic chuckled.

“No.” Shadow furrowed his eyebrows as the dancing flames flickered before him. “I’m bewildered with how we even managed to get a fire burning. We did everything wrong .”

“Yet here it is before you, burning ever brightly.” Sonic presented the campfire proudly.

“I am inclined to believe those matches you fetched from the cabin can’t even be called matches.” Shadow picked up one of the matches which looked more like broken cardboard. “Where did you get them exactly?”

“The warmth doesn’t lie, Shadow.”

“This is a sad day for physical science.”

“Well, Shadow,” Sonic suddenly placed his hand onto Shadow’s shoulder, causing him to jolt slightly. “This may sound nauseating to you, but… I always knew you weren’t all bad. You’re a pretty nice guy.”

“You’re right. It is nauseating. Now hands off.”

“Just listen to me, Shadow.” Sonic rolled his eyes. “I just wanted to say how brave you were back when you confronted Black Doom. You rejected your past identity, knowing you can just create a new one. You were strong enough to break out of your own limits and do what was best for the rest of the world.

“I admire you, Shadow.”

Shadow didn’t respond. He looked down, seemingly finding the right words to respond with. “...I suppose I accept your admiration.”

Sonic’s eyes lit up, his previous weariness washed away instantaneously as he wrapped his arms around Shadow playfully. '“So… does this mean we’re best buds now?”

“Get your hands off me.” Shadow shoved Sonic off in an instant.

“Aww, why not?” Sonic pouted. “We may have differences — lots of them, but tonight we could finally agree on something! After teaming up all this while, don’t you think this calls for a friendship?”

“...fine.”

Sonic leapt up in the air with joy, and for a moment Shadow thought he was going to do a cartwheel right then and there. “Thanks a lot, Shads!”

“...don’t call me that.”

“But it sounds cuter!”

“I don’t want to sound cute.”

“Mm, I’ll keep that in mind, Shads.” A certain fragrance emitting from the cabin hit both hedgehogs. “Oh gosh, Amy must’ve pulled out the chilli dogs. Mmmmm , the main course! Well, catch ya later Shads!”

Shadow harrumphed in annoyance as the blue blur finally set off for the cabin, left all alone with the miraculous campfire. He was filled with warmth, but not from it. Sonic’s smile was wide and genuine. His show of gratitude passionate. He could taste the nectar of joy and happiness leaking out of him.

He didn’t know he had it in him to ever make someone as happy as this again, after all that’s happened. Not since Maria. Perhaps this was just typical of Sonic’s signature eccentricness.

…or perhaps he was wrong.

Looks like he still had a purpose in life after all.

“Well, that was certainly worth a triple vanilla sundae topped with chocolate syrup and sprinkles,” Rouge remarked as she rested her chin on her hand. “I didn’t know Sonic was that troubled back then. Poor Blue needed a hug. And kudos to you two getting that campfire up! I would’ve hated to break my nails over it.”

“I’m still open for more sundaes.” Shadow noted as he earnestly yet subtly licked his spoon clean, lest he invoked Rouge’s attention.

“Depends. You got more stories to tell?”

“Well, Sonic wouldn’t appreciate it if I continue though.”

“You can ask him for yourself, love.” Rouge raised her head and looked over Shadow’s shoulder. “Speak of the Devil.”

Shadow turned to the window and nearly died of fright. Sonic pressed his face and hands against the glass panel of the café, minding to take off his helmet beforehand. Rouge doubled over from laughter as Shadow had to muster all the self-restraint he had to not launch the sundae bowl directly at Sonic’s flattened face.

“Oh c’mon Shads, it was just a little joke!” Sonic tried to appeal to a sulking Shadow sitting beside him, who decided he would die the moment he faced his partner. He buried his head under the woollen hood that came with his jacket and effectively isolated himself from further communication.

“Let him be, Blue.” Rouge was drying off the tears that ruined her mascara. “How did you know we were here?”

“If you must know, Rouge,” Sonic leaned in with a grin as he took a look at Shadow, who had excommunicated him. “I put a tracker in his jacket.”

“You WHAT ?” Shadow flipped his lid as he turned to Sonic. He frantically tore the jacket off himself and picked on every single opening he could find on it. “How did you place the damn thing??”

“With my kisses.” Sonic grabbed onto one of Shadow’s jacket sleeves and planted his lips on it. “Simple yet effective. I’d need to do it daily as the effects would wear off.”

“Har har. How incredibly funny.” Shadow tossed the jacket at Sonic. “You can have your jacket back, Mr. Funny Guy.”

“Why is Shadow so bothered about trackers anyway?” Sonic turned to Rouge confused, as he tried to get the baggy jacket off his head.

“Let’s just say… he didn’t have nice memories while working with G.U.N.” Rouge cleared her throat as she sipped the last bits of her latte.

Sonic turned to Shadow, now with an empathetic look. “Oh Shadow, I’m sorry. I’ll plant my kiss trackers on you directly next time, okay?” He proceeded to plant a kiss onto Shadow’s forehead, whose anger seemed to dissipate almost immediately. Rouge couldn’t help but feel infatuated with the pure chemistry between the two idiots as she observed their continued bickering.

This was when her phone started ringing. Alarmed, she stood up and excused herself. “I’m sorry boys, but I’ll have to head back to the hotel. That was a reminder for my virtual meeting with the big boss.”

“Ooh, I’ll send you back, Rouge! Hop on my bike!” Sonic stood up, tossing the jacket back onto Shadow unceremoniously. He ran for the exit to hold open the door for her, as Shadow started demonstrating his comprehensive vocabulary of profanities to the rest of the people in the café.

“You were a bit too harsh on Shadow there, Blue.” Rouge chuckled as she seated herself onto a glistening cobalt blue motorcycle, holding tight to her purse.

“It’s payback for him eating my leftover chilli dogs last night. He’ll get over it.” Sonic handed his spare helmet to Rouge. “Here you are.”

“Black with red streaks… I think I know who this belongs to,” Rouge chuckled as she examined the decals on the helmet before putting it on. “Nice bike, by the way.”

“Thanks! Shadow picked it out for me,” Sonic looked over his shoulder in his helmet as he jump-started the vehicle. “Insisted that I needed one, so I just allowed him.”

“Even when you run at the speed of sound?”

“Well, one’s gotta learn to choose their battles wisely.”

As the two rode down the highway across the dimming sunset, Rouge noticed a subtle change in Sonic’s footwear. “What are those?” She pointed out.

“Oh, these? Shadow picked this for me too! Complained that my old sports shoes were battered and said he’ll get me something better.” Sonic lifted one foot for Rouge’s better inspection, before quickly retracting it back down lest it got claimed by oncoming vehicles. “He didn’t know the slightest thing about sports, but by Chaos he did it! Did his research and everything. Not a day passed by that I didn't wear them.”

Rouge smiled to herself, finally obtaining the answers to her question. She didn’t expect today to be this rewarding despite the initial misfortune  — getting to witness the love between two boys, and solving the mystery behind the fire kindled in an odd match.

Notes:

Another fic done! The backlog of unpublished fics in my Google docs sure is piling up, and under FlawlessThoughtlessness' insistence I had to finally post this fic which had been stuck in development hell for a month. Totally not because I forgor about it. (ironically enough this fic was spawned from a random idea that popped up, and the backlog is still unchanged) Partially got the writing mood again after being informed of the latest IDW issues announcements (featuring my boy Mimic!!1!1 after driving in his truck for three years)

But as always, thank you very much for reading my fic and hope you enjoyed it! I hope to publish the rest of my fics in the future!
