Miyuki wouldn't say he was, well you know.. head over heels for Sawamura. Just that he was kind of, somehow in love with the dumb and endearing pitcher he’s beginning to think about more and more recently.
His teammates on the other hand would wholeheartedly disagree. They know Sawamura has Miyuki wrapped securely around his pointer finger. If anything, Sawamura is the same for Miyuki and what’s worse is that Miyuki knows this. But he hasn’t and won’t do anything simply so the pitcher can figure out his feelings on his own time and not Miyuki’s or the team’s for that matter.
Miyuki sighs, to be honest he has known he is in love with Sawamura for a while now yet the idiot, to no one's surprise, was still oblivious to Miyuki's, obvious to anyone but Sawamura, affection for him.
Some started to feel bad for Miyuki, having to watch his crush, though definitely more than a crush, from afar because Sawamura was still oblivious to the way Miyuki's eyes would light up when he caught sight of the pitcher. The way his smile would always be a bit bigger than usual when he was talking to Sawamura. The natural almost unknown fondness that falls over Miyuki’s face when talking to the pitcher.
The way Miyuki would stare at Sawamura fondly when he was very excited and happy about something. The way it would make Miyuki himself happy. Even happier when Miyuki was the sole reason for Sawamura to feel such happiness.
Some really couldn't help but feel bad for him. Even though he was the same one who torments and teases them a lot.
Though some (Kuramochi) found it hilarious. And hilarious it was, for a while at least but even he couldn't help but start to feel a little bad. Sawamura was truly oblivious to the situation around him.
Which is why Kuramochi made it his mission to make Sawamura (finally) realize his feelings for the catcher.
Not everyone knew Sawamura loved Miyuki just as much if not more than Miyuki loved Sawamura. Only a handful of people knew this information. Miyuki was one, Kuramochi would say he was the first to realize.
Kuramochi only knew because he, like the Kominato brothers, took notice when Miyuki would smile like he always did when he looked at Sawamura, brighter and more free then with anyone else.
But his eyes were pained, always looking at Sawamura with such carefree smiles made his eyes also unconsciously show more.
Soon Kuramochi became curious as to why. So he paid more attention to what Sawamura would say, to see how he would act around Miyuki.
He did that and realized why. He guessed this was when he also started feeling bad for Miyuki.
He realized Sawamura loves Miyuki just as much, yet Sawamura hadn't realized himself.
Sawamura would always tend to gravitate towards Miyuki more, his smile and eyes would light up at just the mention of Miyuki. And when he would see Miyuki it was as if he saw his purpose, his reason.
Sure Kuramochi thought, at first, he probably admired Miyuki a lot. Kuramochi couldn't lie and say he didn't, Miyuki was excellent at everything he did, be it batting, game calling, or catching. He was great, Kuramochi admired and even envied Miyuki for this. No matter how many times he tells himself not to, he can't help but feel envious.
He believed in the beginning, when Kuramochi had just realized, Sawamura probably just admired Miyuki but as time grew he took notice of when Sawamura would talk about Miyuki.
Sawamura would say he hated the catcher whenever Miyuki teased him, but the small smile on his lips never faltered, the happiness in his eyes and voice never dimmed. Sawamura would always crave for Miyuki's attention and praise. Even a little "Good ball." Made Sawamura's smile wider than before.
Kuramochi before would laugh, should laugh and tell Miyuki that's what he gets for being a dick. But he can't because now he thinks of Miyuki as a best friend, a friend at the very least. Even if he'll never admit it out loud.
So Kuramochi decided to try and help, kind of, from the sidelines. He tells Sawamura more often about how it feels like Miyuki and him are a married couple when they bicker.
Telling Sawamura that his smiles are always wider when he's with Miyuki. Teasing Sawamura when he would unconsciously blush at something Miyuki did. Even when doing both of those things only got him cat eyes and a grumpy complaining pitcher.
Kuramochi even 'accidentally' tells Sawamura to shut his boyfriend up. Lying afterwards about his 'slip up' saying he didn't mean too, and it's not his fault they act like they're together. Hiding his own blushing when Miyuki catches on and teases him about being a good friend. To which he kindly tells Miyuki to fuck off.
But it's hopeless, all of it. Sawamura's too stupid and oblivious for his own good, literally.
Until one day, they're all in the cafeteria. It’s lunch time. Everyone's in the lunchroom eating, of course. That is until Sawamura shoots up and shouts the words he's silently wished for ever since he noticed Miyuki and Sawamura's feelings.
"I love him! Wait no, I'm in love with him!" Sawamura shouts, and Kuramochi wants to cry out of relief, happiness? For some reason, definitely not because his friends can finally be together and happy. But before anyone can utter a syllable.
Miyuki's cup brakes.
That causes an uproar "What the fuck, Miyuki?" Kuramochi can't help but shout, noticing Sawamura's flinch from the sudden noise. Taking him out of his head. Kuramochi should’ve known Miyuki was a bigger idiot than he got credit for.
"Why'd you break your glass?" Sawamura asks dumbfounded. Looking alarmed and surprised but also worried.
Though as he’s looking Miyuki over, Sawamura notices that Miyuki's right hand was bleeding. "Miyuki!" Reaching over the table, Sawamura steals Nori's napkins.
Just as Nori utters a quiet "What?" No one had time to even comprehend what had led to this point nor what this revelation would mean. Hopefully a happy battery and less lovesick idiots.
Miyuki finally turns to look at Sawamura, and as Sawamura is fussing over his hand Miyuki asks almost unseeing the boy in front of him.
"What did you just say?"
Sawamura looks around confused at the rest of his teammates who are also confused.
"What?" Sawamura asks, pausing as he's wiping the blood off Miyuki's hand. Before Miyuki asked the ultimate but confusing question he was trying to stop the bleeding from Miyuki’s hand.
Miyuki repeats himself "What did you just say?"
"Miyuki?" Sawamura says in a questioning tone. Looking very confused and considerably more worried.
Miyuki shakes his head, staring Sawamura in the eyes. Getting a grasp of himself. "No before that."
Sawamura squeaks blushing bright red. Realizing what Miyuki wants him to say, confess too! He quietly says but with the utmost honesty and adoration "I'm in love with him."
Looking down at his lap, Sawamura doesn't see the way Miyuki's face turns sour. Sawamura doesn't see the way hurt, jealousy and anger cross Miyuki's face. Seeing as Sawamura said he was in love with whoever this him is and not in love with Miyuki the catcher gets the wrong idea.
Sawamura doesn't see the obvious shock on his teammates faces at the raw emotions crossing Miyuki's face clearly. The only ones to probably ever be seen so clearly and with so much raw emotion on Miyuki’s face.
Miyuki schools his expression just as fast as it changed and nods to himself, he gently pulls his hand out of Sawamura's. No matter what, he'll always love him. But right now with him in love with someone that’s not himself, Miyuki can’t bear to hold his hand and stare at his face.
Causing said boy to look up in confusion. "Miyuki? What are you doing?"
Miyuki hums "Going on a run for a while." Before walking out, not waiting for anyone to say anything.
Sawamura frowns, not noticing that everyone in the room besides the one who needed to hear it most heard his seemingly defeated whisper, “But I love you.”
Kuramochi grits his teeth at noticing Miyuki forming his right hand into a fist and squeezing hard.
"Damnit Miyuki, you better not cause any more injuries to your hand. You're a catcher for baseball's sake!" Kuramochi can't help but curse in his mind.
I have to deal with not one but two oblivious idiots! Great.
It's not until he hears Sawamura whimper, does he snap out of the trance he was in.
"Sawamura," Kuramochi hears, noting it was Haruichi who said it.
"Why did he just leave?" Sawamura asks out loud, but everyone knows he was asking himself, rather than the others in the room.
Kuramochi sighs, "He left because he's stupid." Kuramochi says, dragging a hand down his face.
Sawamura hums, still not all there and asks "Why do you think he's stupid?"
Kuramochi barks out a laugh even though right now all he really feels like doing is crying from shock.
"Because he just got his feelings requited and the first thing he does is storm out the room." Kuramochi finishes, sighing afterward.
Sawamura takes a moment to process what Kuramochi just said. After a long, long pause Sawamura finally connected the dots.
"He knows I love him?! No. Because then if he did wouldn't he have told me or would he have just waited for me to figure it out?" In an answer to his own question he mumbles "Yeah the stupid tanuki would've let me figure it out, no matter how long it took." Sawamura shakes his head.
Stupid catcher really let me be oblivious while he knew I liked him and he liked me yet did nothing about it. "So he knew I loved him before I did." Sawamura mumbles, scratching the back of his neck in bewilderment.
"But then why would he get up and just leave?" Sawamura asks louder. Looking up from his lap, staring at his fellow first years and upperclassmen.
Everyone shrugs. He hears a few mumble things like "Beats me." And "Only he would know." In exasperation, annoyed with the whole situation revolving around those two, the third and some of the second years especially.
That is until Kuramochi jumped up from his spot. “He thinks you love someone else!” Sawamura’s head snaps up. Miyuki would probably think he was in love with someone else rather than figuring he figured out his own feelings. Hell, he probably thinks he read Sawamura all wrong. Thinks Sawamura never liked him to begin with.
He’s got it all wrong and Sawamura has to find him. He has to find him. Find Miyuki.
He doesn’t realize the commotion he caused stumbling to get up as fast as he can. He doesn’t realize his teammates yelling, he’ll even if he did he knows he wouldn’t care because he finally figured out his feelings and he’ll never let Miyuki feel alone again.
He had been thinking about his feelings for his catcher for about two weeks now. And he knew for certain he loved his stupid, overly egotistical, tanuki catcher.
Running straight out the lunch room and whipping his head that way and this until he spotted the catcher walking around the field, the same one he spotted Sawamura and Furuya that night.
He sprints to Miyuki, as fast as he can and he doesn’t care that he’s crying already nor that literally everyone can probably see him as he runs with tears dripping down his face.
He doesn’t care about anything but Miyuki and if when Miyuki sees him does he think to turn around and run as well, probably. But Sawamura knows he won’t just like he somehow knows Miyuki will actually stop and look concerned because he’s a selfless bastard no matter how he convinces everyone else he’s selfish.
Miyuki does as Sawamura thought he stops noticing the tears dripping down Sawamura’s face as he runs to Miyuki. Even as his hand throbs and his heart beats painfully against his chest he takes steady steps to Sawamura’s form. Only wanting to comfort the boy for his happiness is Miyuki’s.
Almost crashing together harshly, Miyuki braces for impact a second before Sawamura collides with him. As Sawamura sobs Miyuki brings his uninjured hand to Sawamura’s hair brushing through it gently.
“Hey? Hey what’s wrong, you okay?” Miyuki asks with nothing but love for the boy in his arms.
Sawamura only sobs. Miyuki pulls back to look at Sawamura only for said boy to bring his arms up from around Miyuki’s back to his face holding Miyuki’s face gently as he surges forward and kisses him.
And with a startled yelp Miyuki looks wide eyed at Sawamura, trying to pull away. Miyuki pushes Sawamura off.
“Hey?! Sawamura I can’t- I won’t be someone you can mess around with.” The ‘it’ll hurt too much’ goes unsaid.
Sawamura cries, letting his head fall into the crook of Miyuki’s neck. Calming down he whispers. “Miyuki I love you.”
Miyuki doesn’t hear him and continues to brush his fingers through Sawamura’s hair gently. “Hey Sawamura, can you tell me what’s wrong?”
Miyuki asked gently, calming Sawamura even more with just his voice alone. Sawamura supposes that’s a given as Miyuki’s voice is slightly deep and gentle. A calm wind that runs through Sawamura.
Sawamura huffs a puff of air out. Watching as Miyuki involuntarily shivers as the puff of warmer air hits his neck.
“You stupid dumb tanuki!” Sawamura grumbles and before Miyuki can plead his case, clearly not fine with the insults if the offended look on his face is anything to go by.
“I love you! I will always love you and you’re stupid letting me figure this out myself! It would’ve been much easier and definitely quicker if you had just-“ He was cut off as a pair of lips he’s been thinking about nonstop for the last two weeks kisses him.
It was just a quick simple touch of their lips first then as they continued it got rougher, more eager, and definitely more desperate.
Gasping for air Miyuki pulls back only to dive right back in at the whine that leaves Sawamura’s mouth. Sawamura sighs into the kiss falling even deeper for the stupid tanuki who broke a glass thinking about someone who could never exist in Sawamura’s heart as long as Miyuki was around.
Oh, his hand. Oh god his hand! Pulling back rapidly, if it was any other time Sawamura would have laughed as Miyuki chased after his lips. But right now was important, Miyuki broke glass with his right hand, his throwing hand.
Grabbing gently at Miyuki’s bloodied hand he winces for Miyuki as said male lets out a hiss.
“Fuck, I forgot about that.” Miyuki sighs now, also staring at his injured hand. Luckily there looks to be no glass stuck in his hand so that’s a plus!
Sawamura smiled softly at the Miyuki-ness of it all, of course he would forget about himself when he was worrying about someone else.
Miyuki huffed, “Looks like I’ll be on the sidelines for a few days.”
Sawamura huffs as well, “Yeah looks like it, though don’t worry I’ll fill you in!”
Miyuki laughs “Oh really? Well then maybe it won’t be so bad.”
Sawamura laughs as well, smiling so brightly at Miyuki he almost feels the need to shade his eyes. “Yeah! I’ll give you the utmost, detailed description of my day ever!”
As they walked to the nurse’s office they let their hands brush each other with every movement. And if the team saw the two on their short walk across the field to the nurses office holding hands after lunch no one said or did anything. But if you looked at two pink haired and a green haired you’d see a small yet bright grin. Finally, the idiots are together.
As they were waiting on the nurse to get back from lunch, which had ended just minutes before, Miyuki asked the awaiting question.
“Hey, does this mean we’re together?” A hopeful tone and wistful eyes shown through his nonchalant face.
Sawamura smiled, locking their non-dominant hands together, “Yeah I’d say so.”
Miyuki smirks a playful look in his eyes, “Yeah? Well, are you going to give me a kiss then?”
Sawamura hums, licking his own lips and letting his eyes land on Miyuki’s. “Definitely.” Before grabbing Miyuki’s face gently with his left hand, and bringing their lips together in a gentle yet passionate kiss.
“I love you.”
Miyuki blushes not yet used to the affection back from Sawamura “Me too.” He replied with the biggest Cheshire Cat grin.
Sawamura only huffed, smiling again at Miyuki.
“Yeah well you know what, I’m not the love sick idiot that waited however long for another idiot to figure out his shit.” Miyuki’s matching grin was enough response for the both of them.
Kissing again with more force, Miyuki smiled against Sawamura’s lips. He was glad he waited, he’d wait again if it meant Sawamura knew what he wanted.
Pulling away Miyuki said “I love you too.”
Smiling the biggest grin Miyuki’s ever seen, Sawamura only kisses him again.
Until the nurse walked in, catching the sight of the two bright matching grins that adorned their faces. Slightly worried for both of their healths, she looks over Sawamura as well.
