Team Rosters

Summary:

Before returning to Hogwarts, Ginny must make sure she's on the same page of her brother's boyfriend.

Or, that one brunch where Ginny and Oliver spend most of the time plotting the best team line ups for the annual Weasley Christmas Quidditch game

Work Text:

The weekend before Ginny was due back at Hogwarts, she floo’d over to Percy’s apartment on a Sunday morning, holding a bouquet of flowers from the Burrow’s garden.

“Aw look, Ginny’s picking us up for a first date!” cooed Oliver from the couch.

“Honestly Oliver, as beautiful as you are, Ginny’s eyes are set on Harry, and even you just can’t compete with the Chosen One.” Percy tutted as he took the flowers from his sister and accio’d a vase. “Thank you very much for these.”

Ginny smiled. “Well, you know Percy, I may make a move for Oliver if it’ll remind Harry that I’m not a sure bet.”

“Sorry love. While it’s well-established that I have a thing for red-heads, you’re still not my type. But if my favorite Seeker is having problems finding what he’s looking for, let me know.”

“It’s complicated.”

Percy finished arranging the flowers on the side table. “You can fill us in over brunch. We have a table waiting for us.”

Half an hour later, they were seated on the patio of a lovely Muggle gastropub on the banks of Beverly Brook, toasting Ginny being named Quidditch Captain. They had, of course, already celebrated with the larger family when she first got her badge, but Oliver thought it was something worth celebrating repeatedly. Plus, George had put a bug in his ear about her talent, so he had pulled McGonagall aside while fixing the castle, so he had some more to discuss.

“Ok, ok, speaking of Quidditch, you know I’ve never actually seen you fly, so I had to make sure my team was in good hands and had a word with your new Headmistress.”

Percy hit his arm, but Oliver continued, recognizing the blazing look in Ginny’s eyes as the same one Percy got when talking about revising schedules. “She said that on the pitch, you’re better than all of your brothers, combined.”

Ginny smirked in satisfaction and Percy looked from his boyfriend to his sister and back again. He had heard she was good, but, well, everyone knew Charlie could have played for England and the twins had been very good as well. Ron had been on the team, too, but Percy hadn’t seen him play. To be better than all of them? Combined? Ginny? Merlin!

Oliver took a sip of champagne and nodded. “She then had the gall to say you’re the best player the school has seen in at least fifteen years. I reminded her that I had been on the team in the last fifteen years. AND SHE DID NOT AMEND HER STATEMENT! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!”

Percy and Ginny laughed at Oliver’s indignation.

Oliver refilled all their glasses. “Anyway, one of your other brothers mentioned that you may be interested in going pro? McGonagall also said I can come up this year to help coach you for tryouts, if you want?”

Percy smiled at Oliver’s sudden shyness over his offer.

Ginny just stared in amazement at him for a few beats. “Really Oliver? Are you serious? About all of it?”

Oliver laughed. “Of course. Now I don’t think Puddlemere is looking for a chaser this year, but we might be up for a reserve seeker if you want to switch back?”

The look in Ginny’s face again reminded him of Percy at his most driven. “Holyhead. I want Holyhead.”

“Yeah, I know. I just wanted to make my pitch for Puddlemere so I’m not playing against you and forcing your brother to choose between us.”

The look of sudden fear on Percy’s face made them both laugh. Merlin! Which team would he root for when Puddlemere played Holyhead? (Even though he’d only known of Ginny’s talent for less than a minute, he had no doubt she’d get what she wanted)

The waiter came by and they ordered and conversation switched to other topics. At the next lull, Ginny set down her silverware and looked at the two men across from her.

“To switch back to Percy’s favorite topic, we do have one more thing to discuss - the teams for the Christmas match.”

Percy groaned and Oliver looked confused. Percy eventually explained, “There’s a massive Quidditch game every Christmas at home. It’s always been competitive, but I imagine it’s just gotten worse in the past few years?”

Ginny nodded.

“I assume they finally started letting you play?”

Ginny laughed, “and have regretted it ever since! As Oliver said, I’m better than everyone combined.”

“So, we’re playing on the same team, right?” asked Oliver.

“That’s what I’m hoping! Last time we played, Bill and Ron were keepers, and then the twins, Harry, and I were chasers. Fleur didn’t show it, but I think she wanted to play. My guess is she’s secretly an excellent flyer and she loves to show off. But, we’ll have Charlie and Oliver this year, and we won’t have…”

Ginny’s voice cracked and her eyes welled up. Percy reached out and put his hand over hers, his eyes equally wet. They gave each other watery smiles and let the moment pass.

Percy zoned out for the next half an hour as Ginny and Oliver debated different team make-ups to make the game close enough to be fun, but to still guarantee their side would win.

When Christmas rolled around, all of Oliver and Ginny’s plans went out the window when George showed up with Angelina, but they didn’t really care, based on the look of joy on his face.

Plus, they still won.
