Work Text:
The world thought of them as heroes
But heroes without a mask
Identities bared even as they rose
But no one bothered to ask
If their bare face was anything but a mask anyway
All of them were broken
Even though it was never spoken
The pain was too great
The pain of their friends given in to fate
Though they wore no physical masks
At least not to the world
Each of them knew what the other was hiding
All of them acting like they weren’t dividing
Pretending like they were fine
Even though it only got worse with time
One had lost his best friend
They all had really but it hit him the hardest
For that friend was saving him when he met his end
And so he has to pretend
That he’s fine for the sake of his girlfriend
And for his mom
Who’s beloved died for him
And for the world
Who now turn to him
And the wizard
The wizard himself has lost everything
His father figure
And both his sisters
Along with his lifelong friend
All with no break
No time at all ever for grieving
Holding it together for everyone else’s sake
Because he can’t let them know he’s stopped believing
In everyone and everything
Because all this world has ever done for him
Was cause him pain
He’s used to it by now though
How long it’s been without a mask
An extended lifetime isn’t all fun, so
Loss is no stranger to ask
Both stay strong for the others
Wondering if maybe it should have been them
In one case, it had been him
But he came back again
For her sake
The world’s sake
But all the world did was take
In return
They wonder if there’s even any point anymore
No one to continue on for
But unfortunately there is
So they stay each for this
For their friends who they try to save from more pain
Save like they couldn’t save the others
So they continue on, in their mind in vain
Their face a mask while their feelings smother
No matter how hard it is to breathe
Never let them know
Lest they too leave
