Kiyoomi doesn’t like rain.

He likes the IDEA of rain.

Being cozy and warm inside his home. Bundled up while reading a book, or slouching around. Rain serves as white noise outside of his comfort bubble.

But rain itself? Big no-no.

Rain is dirty and cold. Bringing who-knows how many bacteria into his environment. The world is a nasty place. Full of pollution and germs. The once clean and sparkling bodies of water now full of garbage and other unsanitary things Kiyoomi refuses to think about.

So no, rain is basically that polluted water, evaporated and condensed into a new place, spreading evil everywhere. Just thinking about it makes him recoil. Sakusa would rather stay away from it, thank you very much.

But Kiyoomi is also a weak man.

Because it turns out, every attempt against going out while it rains is futile when it comes to his golden retriever of a boyfriend.

Atsumu is a hopeless romantic, having grown up watching all sorts of romantic comedies and k-dramas with both his Ma and 'Samu during late nights when the summer storms seemed endless, staying up well into the night watching the silly films that brought them comfort. Many mornings waking up to slight drizzles and the smell of pancakes as Papa Miya took it upon himself to stretch those warm moments until the storm eased up outside.

Even though Kiyoomi hates rain, he’s hopelessly in love with Atsumu.

“Come on, Omi!!! Pleaseeee” Atsumu begged, pouting adorably at him, even though a smile broke through it.

Kiyoomi was covered from head to toe in protective gear. Black rain boots (with neon yellow stripes, of course) protecting his feet and calves if he ever stepped into a puddle, god-forsaken. An enormous neon green raincoat shielded him from the unrelenting droplets that never seem to stop. In all honesty, he looked absolutely ridiculous. Especially with his sunny yellow umbrella and the displeased frown that adorned his features.

Atsumu was having a hard time keeping it together. His boyfriend looked positively adorable and he resembled a little kid as he glared at the soaked stone steps of their porch. He wanted to kiss his little pout away until a smile replaced it. Atsumu was already standing a few feet on the pavement. Letting the rain shower him. His own raincoat doing a great job of protecting him from the cold water.

“Atsu… you know I hate rain…” Kiyoomi whined looking at his boyfriend, trying to figure out how he had ended there in the first place. Kiyoomi refused to step out from the roofed entrance to their house. Dry and safe while Atsumu chuckled under the rain.

“Pretty please? I promise to cuddle you lots after. We can even watch that whale documentary ya like so much together! I promise…” Atsumu pleaded. He wanted to dance. It had been one of his longest desires. When he watched the old movies that played at night, his favorite parts always were related to the rain. It just seemed so romantic, dramatic even, but Atsumu was known for his affinity to it. He had even brought a little speaker so it wasn’t so awkward. The device rested innocently on the wooden chair outside on their little porch, safe and dry. Atsumu had a playlist ready and everything.

“…Do we really have to do it out there?” Kiyoomi pursed his lips taking a minuscule step backward. Atsumu’s features softened and he hopped into the first step of the entrance.

A random song was already playing in the background. It was soft and sweet, perfect for swaying.

Atsumu may be a hopeless romantic, but he also was an understanding boyfriend. And he would do anything he could to make his boyfriend feel comfortable, even if it meant changing his plans.

“Hmm, not really…” Atsumu hummed stepping closer to Kiyoomi. The latter scooted to the side so both of them could stand side by side on the porch.

The two athletes stared into the wet street for a while. Soon the song playing faded to an end and another, equally slow and comforting, started playing. Atsumu recognized it immediately as one of Kiyoomi’s favorites.

Sakusa could feel Atsumu’s warmth next to him. He felt guilty. Even though he knew Atsumu would never hold anything like this over him. Part of him wanted to throw his worries away. A little rain wouldn’t hurt him. He knew that. But the irrational part of his brain, and the one behind his whole disorder in the first place, reminded him of everything else and it overruled his desire. He sighed, frustrated with himself. He hid a scowl turning to the side. But before he could sulk further, a warm hand enclosed against his own, and just like that, his worries evaporated. Atsumu continued to stare at the rainy street. It was a cold and windy evening but the little smile he was wearing while he mouthed along to the lyrics made Kiyoomi feel warm inside.

Atsumu seemed to glow like the sunniest summer day.

Suddenly, Kiyoomi turned to face his lover. Pink tinted his cheeks as he offered his free hand. Atsumu took his hand wordlessly as he tilted his head in confusion. Kiyoomi swallowed his nervousness and pulled Atsumu flush against his chest. Circling his waist with one arm while the other held his hand gently.

Atsumu’s mouth turned into a little ‘o’ while his eyes widened in surprise. A breathless chuckle was pulled out of him as Kiyoomi swayed them around, a little clumsily, but happily nonetheless. Kiyoomi couldn’t contain the grin that stretched over his lips as he twirled Atsumu once before pulling him back towards him. They swayed into the next song, holding each other close and stealing kisses between giddy giggles.

After a while of dancing. Atsumu had his back against Kiyoomi’s chest while they swayed contently. The rain had settled into a light sprinkle but the couple hadn’t noticed, or simply didn’t care, too engrossed in each other.

“I know we didn’t dance in the rain, but I hope I made it up to you, Atsu…” Kiyoomi spoke, dipping his head against Atsumu’s exposed neck. Pressing a little kiss over his pulse. “M’ sorry” He mumbled against his skin, seeking warmth and comfort. Atsumu’s movements stuttered for a moment before he laughed, light and breezy.

“Are ya kidding? This was the best thing ever, Omi…” Atsumu turned out and circled his arms around Kiyoomi’s shoulders. He cupped his face and pulled it up to look at him. “Thank ya…” Atsumu murmured with a soft smile. Kiyoomi searched in his eyes for something. It seemed like he found it because he smiled back and joined their foreheads together.

“Okay…” Kiyoomi whispered, hiding his own smile.

And so, Kiyoomi hated rain, but having Atsumu with him made him think that maybe it wasn’t always so bad…

And maybe, Kiyoomi was more of a hopeless romantic than he thought.
