Work Text:
I come home, in the mornin’ light
My mother says, “When you gonna live your life right?”
Sebastian had let his guard down. It had been years. Years. And Sam had respected his wish never to speak of the incident. Sebastian had been paranoid for so long, but so if anything was going to happen, it would have happened by now right?
Oh momma dear, we’re not the fortunate ones
And girls, they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
Wrong. So wrong. Unless it was a coincidence? Was it? That was possible. Wasn’t it? Sam hadn’t even glanced in his direction yet. So maybe, just maybe this was all a random fluke. Did Sam even remember? It was so long ago and Sam’s memory was notoriously terrible.
The phone rings in the middle of the night
My father yells, “What you gonna do with your life?”
And it’s not as if anyone else knew. Sam was the only one. Obviously he trusted Sam otherwise they wouldn’t be here right now. Maybe it was just a random request?
Oh daddy dear you know you’re still number one
But girls, they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun
Were there other songs that hadn’t been on the setlist they had curated? Sebastian thought back over the last couple of hours, but quickly gave up. It was a waste of time. Sam had done the bulk of the work, music being so important to him.
That’s all they really want
Some fun
When the workin’ day is done
Oh girls, they want to have fun
Oh girls just want to have fun (girls, they want)
(wanna have fun, girls)
(wanna have)
Sebastian hoped the internal battle didn’t show on his face. But of course, no one would be surprised it he was a bit tetchy. It was a large social gathering and he was notoriously anti-social. Plus Sam wasn’t by his side. Sam who finally looked at him, only to shoot him a glowing smile before bringing his attention back to the conversation he was having.
Some boys take a beautiful girl
And hide her away from the rest o’ the world
No. Sebastian shook away the thought. Sam wouldn’t have done this. It had to be something else.
“Why is this song playing?” Abby facial features wrinkled, “Not that I’m complaining. I’m enjoying it. It’s just not your style.”
Balls.
I wanna be the one to walk in the sun
Oh girls, they want to have fun
Oh girls just wanna have
“Dunno,” he shrugged, “Maybe it was a request”
Sebastian had only been a teenager at the time. When it happened he was positive he was going to die of embarrassment.
“I don’t think so,” Abby shook her head. Their conversation paused as Abby very loudly and drunkenly sang along.
That’s all they really want
Is some fun
When the working day is done
Oh girls, they wanna have fun
Oh girls just wanna have fun (girls, they wanna)
(wanna have fun, girls)
(wanna have)
“When I tried to make a request earlier the DJ shot me down,” she continued. Sebastian felt a like he swallowed a rock, “Said that there were no requests. Groom’s orders.”
Fuck.
“Oh,” Sebastian said, trying hard to keep composed.
He remembered the moment so clearly. Apparently so did Sam, who was looking at him from across the room once more. The grin on his face suddenly looked much more sinister.
They just want, they just wanna (girls)
They just want, they just wanna (girls just want to have fun)
Oh girls, girls just wanna have fun
It was his guilty pleasure. Emphasis on the guilty. Everyone had one right? It was only natural. But why did his have to be so embarrassing?
(just want, they just wanna)
They just wanna, they just wanna (girls)
They just wanna, they just wanna (girls just wanna have fun)
Oh girls, girls just wanna have fun
And who could blame him for dancing to it? It was a bop for crying out loud. Plenty of people on the dance floor were enjoying it.
Sam was still looking at him. Sebastian took a break. His fiancé, no husband, he internally corrected himself had done this. To prank him. After years. They hadn’t even been dating at that point. In fact it was so embarrassing that it was a miracle that they ended up dating at all.
When the workin’
When the workin’ day is done
Sebastian never really like unexpected visitors. And he truly despised when they didn’t even bother to knock before coming in. What he liked was privacy.
Oh, when the workin’ day is done
Oh, girls, girls just wanna have fun
Everybody
Huh, huh
Sometimes, only sometimes, Sebastian liked to use that privacy to put on some Cyndi Lauper and dance around his room. Strictly when no one else was around.
All it took was not locking his door once. And it was all ruined.
Sam walked right in, right in the middle of the song. Not only was Sebastian dancing but he was singing along, hairbrush microphone and all. When he finally noticed Sam there, his friend was dumbstruck. Utterly slack jawed standing in the doorway of Sebastian’s bedroom. They locked eyes and Sebastian stopped dead in his tracks, suddenly silent. The volume of the song was suddenly deafening.
“You didn’t see anything,” Sebastian said very stonily.
Sam nodded in agreement, “Nothing.”
“You’re going to leave now.”
“Can I come back?”
“I need at least half an hour.”
They just want, they just wanna (girls)
They just want, they just wanna (girls just wanna have fun)
Sam, who had never spoken a word of the incident before, was now walking towards him again. Sam who submitted the final list of songs to the DJ. Sam who had done this on purpose to tease Sebastian. At their wedding reception. In front of everyone they know.
Was it too soon to get a divorce?
Oh, girls, girls just wanna have fun
Abby had wandered off to join the dance floor.
Sebastian tensed when Sam wrapped his arm around his waist from the side.
(They just wanna, they just wanna) When the workin’
When the workin’ day is done (they just want, they just wanna)
Sam nuzzled his face into the crook of Sebastian’s neck.
“Do you like your surprise?” he mumbled into his husband’s skin.
“Oh it was a surprise alright,” Sebastian grumbled back.
Sam lifted his head, facing Sebastian, puppy dog eyes threatening to peek through, “But do you like it?”
Oh, when the workin’ day is done (girls, girls just wanna have fun)
Sebastian didn’t answer immediately and Sam took advantage of the pause to press a tender kiss to Sebastian’s lips. Sebastian promptly melted a little bit inside.
He also remembered how months later when the song had come on in the Saloon and Sam didn’t say anything or react at all, Sebastian had decided that Sam was worthy enough to know about his crush. And the rest was history.
“I love it.”
Sam absolutely beamed like the ray of sunshine everyone knew him to be, “That was when I first realized my crush was not fleeting. I don’t think I’ve ever told you that before.”
Sebastian was taken aback, and stuttered out some non-words but it was enough to prompt Sam to continue.
“Yeah it was this unaltered, truly authentic view of you that I’d never seen before. And you were just so happy. And seeing it made me so happy. So I knew it was more than just a silly little passing crush.”
Sebastian was positive he was beet red. But he wasn’t embarrassed any more.
Oh girls, girls just wanna have fun.
