Let Me Care

Work Text:

With ease, Megatron trudged through what humans would call tall grass. His huffs, the aftermath of a fight him and Optimus Prime had with two Decepticons, vented out into the evening Summer breeze. The shine of the sun danced along his silver metal as he worked to make distance between him and Optimus who was loading the Decepticons into a G.H.O.S.T. vehicle. Megatron grunted as he shook his helm. He hated that he had to allow his former troops to be captured, but he had no choice but to comply to the command of G.H.O.S.T.

Megatron took a glance back at Optimus and Optimus looked back. The two stared at each other for some time. The ex-Decepticon leader’s cooling fans came on with a whir as he noticed the Prime’s optics travel along his entire frame. The aircraft glared at the semi, obviously quite flustered, even with the space he created with the other. Optimus only smiled back. That sweet, soft smile that Megatron had grown to love all over again these past fifteen years. It was one that he loved long before the war - he loved Optimus long before the war - and Megatron got to experience himself fall in love all over again.

That feeling was oh so easy to notice. The feeling of losing himself helplessly to love. It hit him with a blow stronger than the many Optimus landed on him each time they battled. He felt it before. He knew what it was. Optimus and Megatron had loved each other before. But this time around, he was scared of this feeling. Why?What was the worst that could happen? Well, Optimus could reject him and push him away. Megatron could handle rejection, he thought. He had been rejected his entire onlining. The Galaxy always seemed to be against him before the war. Before he lost himself. Before he lost his Orion Pax.. The former gladiator shook the thought away and continued to make his way through the grass. But, why now.. after everything.. is he so scared of loving and losing Optimus?

Optimus stood watch as the G.H.O.S.T. vehicle drove away with their latest Decepticon prisoners. The Prime ex-vented as he turned to see Megatron leaving the scene. He understood why the other hated having to lock his former troops away. Optimus knew Megatron wanted freedom for all Cybertronians. He did, too. But there was nothing the Autobot leader could do if the Decepticons continued to cause trouble. Without even realising what he was doing, Optimus began to follow after Megatron. He quickly walked the same path behind him, wanting to catch up, but not wanting to seem too desperate by running. When finally in audio range, Optimus called Megatron’s name. The silver mech stopped in his tracks to look back at the red and blue mech. The aircraft’s halt allowed the semi truck to finally catch up.

“What is it, Optimus?”
“Megatron.. I..” Now that Optimus was there, he had no clue what he was going to say. He tilted his helm slightly upwards to look at the other. Total silence fell between the two as Megatron met Optimus’ gaze. The shorter bot continued to stumble over his words, never making proper sense. The taller one cracked out a small smile.
“Still blubbering? Maybe my little archivist is still in there..” He let out a sad laugh, his gaze being averted from the one which coyly stared up at him.
“Megatron-.. That was millions of years ago. You cannot still be hooked onto the old me. Orion Pax does not exist anymore.” Optimus tried to follow Megatron’s optics, just wanting to share their look again.
“Maybe I’m just hooked on you, Optimus..” He whispered out hesitantly before he yet again tried to leave the other behind in the distance. But the Autobot leader simply would not have that.

Megatron groaned as he strutted off from Optimus, angry at himself for saying such an absurd thing. He didn’t want him to know that there was even the slightest possibility of him being in love again. It would ruin everything. Megatron was yanked out of his thoughts when Optimus grabbed his arm. The former warlord’s helm snapped back to look at his old enemy. The aircraft’s expression softened at the semi truck’s sad one.
“Optimus?” He questioned, feeling so scared in this moment.
“Megatron.. Please talk to me.” The Prime stated firmly.
“What could you ever possibly mean? There is nothing to talk about..”
“Megatron, I won’t repeat myself. Just please.. Let me care..”

Megatron was lost for words as he properly came to face Optimus, the latter still keeping hold of the other’s arm. They basked in the comfort of each other’s gaze and the nature around them basked in the oddly loving aura the two were radiating. Optimus flinched when Megatron’s hand reached for his face, slowly coming to hold one side of it.
“Megatron.?” Optimus felt himself shudder at Megatron’s sudden touch as his cooling fans quietly whirred.
“Optimus..” Megatron took a step closer to Optimus and tilted the other’s helm back more so their optics could properly meet. As the two stilled in each other’s presence, all of the fear contained within the silver mech began to slip away. A small smile spread across his faceplates as he looked down at the red and blue mech. “You may no longer be my Orion that I loved so much.. But you are Optimus, who I love even more.”

Optimus gasped out at Megatron’s unexpected confession. The Autobot leader was conflicted. Megatron still loved him? Or... He came to love him again? The semi truck embraced a small, but warm smile after a few moments as he placed his hand on the aircraft’s. “Megatron.. Do you truly mean it? After all we have endured, you have come to love me again? Even if I am no longer Orion.?” The red and blue mech had a tone that was full of uncertainty as he examined the expressions of the silver mech.
“Well, I am not Megatronus anymore, Optimus. Yes, Megatronus loved Orion Pax, but now.?” Megatron started, his voice soft and rather calming, “Megatron loves Optimus Prime. You are amazing. You are doing the things that I failed to do, and I admire you for that. But, you are also my greatest friend. I just simply could not help but love you again.” He finished with care in his tone as a gentle, but somewhat shy, smile was displayed on his faceplates.

“I love you, too, Megatron.. I have for a good few years. It was not hard to notice. You were my first and last love, so I knew what all of those sudden, but familiar, feelings were. After all, my spark is only used to belonging to you. No matter what frame houses it and what name it belongs to.” Optimus spoke his own devotion of love, comfort washed over him as he seemed to melt from the loving gaze of the red optics that stared down into his own.

Megatron then placed his free hand on Optimus’ waist, holding it fondly, perfectly, as if it belonged there - in such a way that the curves of the semi’s waist was crafted especially for the placement of the aircraft’s hands. Just like the two could read one another’s mind, the pair leant in at the same time to engage in a slightly messy, rather tentative but endearing kiss. With a chuckle, the silver mech pulled away before bringing the red and blue mech into a more organised and enjoyable kiss. Their scarred lips locked together with utter perfection, moving in unison as they held each other close. Optimus’ inexperienced hands found their way to the inviting metal of Megatron’s shoulders, and gripped on tenderly as he felt himself slip away, allowing himself to be devoured.

Optimus parted from the kiss all too quickly as his fans roared to cool him down, his hands firm on Megatron’s shoulders. The ex-Decepticon smiled warmly down at the Prime, and he received a rather coy one in return. He laughed. The Autobot leader then embraced his old friend, his arms delicately wrapped around his neck; frames pressed together - smothering delight. The silver bot is taken aback, but oh so pleased when he felt the rumble of the red and blue bot’s engine. Megatron secured his arms around the waist of Optimus Prime, holding him delectably close while the sun illuminated the wholesome scene.

“Optimus?” Megatron’s voice rang beautifully and smoothly, his tone low but caring.
“Yes, Megatron?” Optimus’ curiosity was evident in his tone, alongside the strongest surge of happiness he has felt in such a long time.
“Would you do me the honour of becoming my spark mate?” The question left the aircraft’s mouth effortlessly and bravely, no hesitation present as he locked gazes with the semi’s. The smaller mech stilled with surprise, the whir of his fans louder as his faceplates tinted a deep blue - clearly not expecting the question, despite their amazing shared kiss.
“Megatron..” Optimus faltered, his voice laced with a small amount of static before he reset his vocaliser, “Nothing else in the universe would make me happier than to have the privilege of being your sparkmate.” He vowed, his optics sparkling with an incredible amount of love and admiration.

Megatron then yanked Optimus in for another kiss, it being short but breathtaking. The world seemed to slow around them as they basked in the comfortable silence, their re-found love surging through their frames and out into the open air of Earth. All the recent couple wished was to hold each other, to stay like this forever, but they knew there were matters to attend to. Just as though they could read the thoughts of one another, the embrace ended and nervous hands came to intertwine instead. The pair gave each other one more glance before they turned away and started to head for G.H.O.S.T. headquarters, being able to return to their home at ease for the first time since before the war.
